The first part of this edition outlines Americans' desire to explore the then unknown west of the early 1800's. President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, and recruited his own personal secretary Meriwether Lewis to lead a team of men on a journey to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis traveled to Philadelphia, PA to study from the nation's top scientific minds while his close personal friend William Clark recruited the men for the expedition at Fort DuBois, located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri.
