(Original Air Date 8/3/2023) Award-winning author and historian Robert Watson is my guest this week. He talks about the Confederacy's notorious Libby Prison, located in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War. Resourceful Union officers, held captive under extraordinarily brutal conditions, managed to pull off a daring prison break in February of 1864. The manhunt that followed would be one of the largest in American history.
His book is called "Escape!: The Story of the Confederacy's Infamous Libby Prison and the Civil War's Largest Jail Break".

My great-great-grandfather and his son were imprisoned there. But it was way after the Escape. November 64 to February 65. "Libby Life" written by FF Cavada, reads more like a play or a novel. Although he was there, it sounds more like superfluous flummery.

Two of the greatest fallacies about the war: it was neither a "civil" war nor about slavery. As is said, however, the victor writes the history, hence the erroneous narrative in print regarding the War Between the States.

After 7 minutes of Union propaganda I cannot finish listening to this Eric. Ft. Delaware, a POW camp where the Unionists held Confederate prisoners, was by far the worst. There is a grave monument at Finn's Point, NJ which stands over the 24 hundred Confederates in a mass grave who died at Fort Delaware.

I feel tremendous compassion for any P.O.W. - Union or Confederate, who had to try and survive one of these wretched military prisons. It takes great imagination to even fathom the suffering experienced in these hell-holes. There are no doubt plenty of stories that still need to be told about other prisons in this war.
