1988, Mid-Ohio Con. I was standing in line to get a Hulk mag signed by Todd McFarlane. I noticed somebody was standing nearby, so I turned to see who it was. It was Stan Lee, standing there all by himself holding a cup of coffee. "Hello young man," he said. "Who's your favorite Marvel character?" he asked out of the blue. Recall--Stan Lee was gone from Marvel and was, for the most part, a forgotten guy in `88. The man was dying to talk to somebody, so it was me. I thought a moment and responded: "Spiderman …" He was overjoyed. "Ah, Spiderman--you know I created him with real-world issues in mind. He's always struggling to pay the rent, girls don't dig him and his aunt's always at death's door." And then the Devil took me. I proceeded to bust Stan Lee's balls. I wondered why Peter Parker didn't just patent his web fluid and make himself millions. Stan rubbed his chin. "Well, in the next panel, we would see some shifty lawyer stealing the web fluid formula and leaving our hero high and dry." And then I said: "In the panel after that, we see Pater Parker lawyering up and suing the pants off the first lawyer." Stan smiled and told me to send in a "What If" concept to him. What if PP patented his web fluid and cashed--in. 1988--no handlers, no billion-dollar franchises. Just me and Stan Lee talking comics and "what ifs". Holy God, Stan, thanks for everything. Rest in peace.

Even though he was trying to make money Peter Parker didn't want people to know he had spider powers. Depending on how long after he invented the web shooters after becoming Spider-Man it could still make sense.

I will never forget the day I heard the news. In my bedroom watching a film and saw the news pop up on my phone. I watched a tribute video soon after and burst into tears. This man created my childhood. The first cartoon I ever saw was Spider-Man and since I was hooked on Marvel and other superheroes. I seen so many films, read the comics, go to comic cons and other events to dress up like characters he created and gave me such wonderful childhood memories that wouldn’t have been as awesome if Stan lee wasn’t around. And now I’m nearly 26 and still love it! Thank you for the amazing childhood Stan! The world misses you so much! Thank you for making my childhood awesome! Excelsior! 🤘🏻❤️

Just a few years ago at the 2016 LA Comic Con, I was moderating a Darkwing Duck 25th Anniversary panel. As part of my duties, I was also sitting with one of the voice actors, assisting him with signing autographs. I don't remember the exact reason, but some issue came up and I had to go to the green room backstage to get it fixed for my voice actor. As I was waiting, here comes Stan Lee walking right up in my direction, followed by a small entourage of people. As he walked past me, he looked right at me and gave me a big smile and said "hello." I smiled back at him and gave him the same greeting, and then he was gone. I never got to have any long discussion with him about how much his creations meant to me or any kind of acknowledgment about his service in WWII, but that smile was all I needed. I could feel this man's warmth in that moment. He shall be missed.

One of my fondest memories of Stan Lee was how he would introduce the episodes for the 90s Iron Man and Fantastic Four animated series. His enthusiasm and sense of wonder were just palpable with the way he would talk about the episode about to be shown. It was almost as if he were talking directly to the viewers, promising a fun, amazing adventure ahead! In the end, he may not have written the "Great American Novel" he had aspired to do, but he gave the world something else that changed the world. Stan Lee's legacy will continue to endure long after we're gone. He shall be sorely missed, but forever remembered. Thank you Stan! You certainly lived quite an amazing life! I think my favorite cameo has to be in Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer. Yes, it's not that great of a movie, but Stan trying to get into Reed and Susan's wedding because "he's Stan Lee" and getting turned away is easily the best part of the movie and in my opinion the best cameo.

@@LadyTylerBioRodriguez Yeah his cameos in TTGTTM were some of the "laughs" on my "laugh counter," but I don't really count those as "Stan Lee Cameos" because it's a DC movie (and because "lul we're TTG, let's make Stan Lee a running gag because he has no business being in our movie").

One of my earliest and therefore most vague memories of television as a child was hearing Stan Lee's voice as I watched my favorite cartoons. We all knew it was coming; no-one lives forever, but I'm sad to see him go. I'm glad he got to see the MCU succeed the way it has. The last things you experience should be pleasant ones. My greatest memory of Stan Lee is and will always be the genuine gratitude and love he had for his fans and for comics. With all the negativity in this world, Stan Lee was always able to project a positive perspective about life and the people in it. Which was always refreshing and extremely welcoming to me. Even when it came to someone he didn't care for, he would serve up wonderful back-handed compliments, which in turn made him bashing someone a humorous affair.

I have two favorite cameos of Stan Lee. Both meaningful. Chronologically, they are - his 2007 cameo in Spider-Man 3. Say what you will about that movie. But Stan pausing next to Peter Parker and looking up at the upcoming tributes to Spider-Man scrolling by on the TV screens of Times Square and saying to him - "... I guess one man CAN make a difference. Nuff Said!" Chills, every time, man. The second is in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. With him and the Watchers. There's actually TWO cameos. One in the movie proper. Which was a laugh riot and CONFIRMED that Stan in the Marvel Universe must've been an agent of the Watchers! "... Like I said before I was so rudely interrupted, that time I was a Fed Ex Delivery guy... " The second is funny yet poignant - more so now. In the end credits The Watchers are walking away and Stan's asking them how he's supposed to get back, they were his ride... "... Aw geez! Guys! I got so many more stories to tell! Aw geez... " Oh Stan. Stan... We would've listened to those stories of yours forever man.

Man, this was a tough watch. I've felt pretty much nothing for every other celebrity death because normally there's a fairly sizable disconnect, but something about Stan lee has always kept him a literal man of the people and it just hits hard. He understood people on a level unseen by celebrity, or politician. And he used that gift to bring stories to BILLIONS. It's something that we should all aspire to be, and even falling short Stan Lee would congratulate you and tell you to get out there and improve then try it again. There's only one, and he made the absolute best of it. Excelsior till the end.

Stan "The Man" Lee is one of my real life heroes. He emphasized Characters and Story and created superheroes/superheroines/supervillains that people can identify with because they weren't flawless icons, but had flaws and were allowed to be human who made mistakes, and, in the case of villains like Dr. Doom, had the potential to be heroes. My fave Stan Lee cameo was from the 2012 Avengers film ("Superheroes in New York? Give me a break!"). 😁

@@SuperWolsey In Star Trek it's easily the most prominent class next to the Miranda though, prominently appearing in several movies starting with Str Trek III as well as The Next Generation, Deep space Nine and Voyager (and pretty much every video game post original series of course). If there's any class a very casual Star Trek fan may have heard of, it's more likely to be the Excelsior or Miranda than any other class including the Constitution, Galaxy and Defiant class. It's not comparable to something one Doctor said once in terms of series prominence. It's more comparable to the Words Silurian or Sontaran in doctor who (I guess the word Tardis is slightly more prominent, but there aren't really any other recurring vessels of similar prominence in that series, which is why I chose species of comparable importance). That being said, I actually heard the word in relation to Stan Lee this year for the first time I can remember, it's probably nothing well known for him to say outside the USA

Great video. I have little time for your 'chats' and live streams. Your editorial content I don't usually enjoy either. But your research, doco style content is amazingly well done. I hope that you keep it up

Also in the late 1970s, Stan Lee and Marvel got into bed with the Toei company the launch Marvel's heroes into the Tokusatsu genre at a time when the genre itself was waining between parental watchdogs, declining ratings of both Kamen Rider (then with Amazon and Stronger) and the Tsubaraya owned Ultraman along with Toho's Godzilla going on their respective hiatuses. This would change with the premiere of Spider-Man in early 1978; the series was a success that the show played a part in revitalizing Toei's repsective shows beginning with reviving Kamen Rider w/ creator's Shotaro Ishinomori's production company but also a show what was originally supposed to be a Captain America adaptation that would regenerate into the 3rd installment of the long running Super Sentai franchise: Battle Fever J in 1979 Marvel and Toei would still be intertwined for two more years in with 1980's Denji Sentai Denziman and 1981's Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan; the latter was Lee's choice to see about adapting it to US audience using original footage and footage from the preexisting material. Stan along with future Fox Kids network president and long time friend Margaret Loesch shopped the idea around to ABC, CBS, and NBC respectively but all three rejected it. Though several years later a Egyptian born billionaire would pick up the baton and would succeed. But that's one story for another time and place.

Thanks for this look into a slice of Japan's media history that often goes overlooked! I'm not necessarily a fan or watcher of the Tokutatsu and Ranger shows myself - but they ARE important both to techniques developed for later live-action superhero type programming as well as stylistic elements that were adopted into many later anime.
