Carl Switzer was born in Paris, Illinois in 1927. He would later become known as "Alfalfa", a character he played on the Hal Roach produced series of film shorts called Our Gang, known later in syndication as The Little Rascals. He died on January 21, 1959, the victim of a killer's bullet as he and another man argued over a lost hunting dog.
In 1935 Switzer was added to the already successful Our Gang comedy series when he was only seven years old. Although he appeared in nearly 75 of the comedy shorts over the next five years, he didn't receive a single dime from the show. At the time Our Gang was filmed, television was still in its infancy, and many considered it to be a temporary novelty. No one even considered the concept of royalties and syndication. As a result, everyone knew Switzer, but he never profited from his fame.
Switzer was the tall, skinny, freckle-faced kid with the uncontrollable cow-lick and the equally uncontrollable singing voice. One of Alfalfa's most memorable Our Gang performances was his spectacularly off-key rendition of I'm in the Mood for Love which appeared in the episode The Pitch Singer in 1936.
As he grew older, Switzer found himself in a series of odd jobs: tour guide, shoeshine boy, bartender, to name a few. But he still had to make a living while he stayed involved in Hollywood. After his Our Gang days ended in 1940, Switzer appeared (often uncredited) in small parts in nearly sixty films, including My Favorite Blonde (1942), The Human Comedy (1943), Going My Way (1944), It's a Wonderful Life (1946), State of the Union (1948), Pat and Mike (1952). Switzer even played a slave in Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments (1956).
Switzer had several run-ins with the law during the 1950s. He was once arrested for cutting down trees in Sequoia National Forest and, in 1958, he was shot and injured by an unknown assailant in front of a bar in the San Fernando Valley.
But by 1958, Switzer seemed to be back on the Hollywood fast track, having landed a plum comic relief role in Stanley Kramer's, The Defiant Ones. But until its release, he still needed to earn a living.
Between acting jobs, Switzer worked as a bartender, and because the pursuit never really worked out, he masterminded a part-time scheme as a bear hunting guide. His customers included, among others, Roy Rogers and Henry Fonda. Before one particular hunting expedition, Switzer borrowed a hunting dog from a friend, Moses "Bud" Stiltz. Unfortunately, the dog ran away during the hunting trip, urging Switzer to put out a $50 reward for its return. A few days later, a man found the dog, and brought it to the bar where Switzer worked. Switzer paid the man the fifty dollar reward and threw in $15 worth of free drinks. Several days later, after a night of drinking, Switzer concocted the booze-fueled idea that Stiltz (the owner of the dog) owed him the $50 he had spent to get the dog back.
On January 21, 1959, a drunken Switzer and his pal, Jack Piott headed over to Stiltz's home in Mission Hills to get his money. They banged on the front door. When the door opened, Switzer flashed a fake police badge and loudly yelled through the open door at Stiltz to let him in.
Once inside, Stiltz and Switzer became involved into a heated argument. Switzer informed Stiltz that he wanted the owner of the dog to pay him the 50 bucks he spent on reward money. Stiltz told him he was "crazy" and to get the hell out of his house at which point all massive holy hell apparently broke loose. Stiltz claims Switzer then hit him over the head with a large lamp (some say it was clock), causing Stiltz to retreat to his bedroom, battered and bleeding from a cut over the eye.
Stiltz emerged from the room with a pistol, which Switzer immediately grabbed out of Stiltz's hand. A shot was fired but neither man was hit. The gunshot caused Stiltz's fiancee and her three children (who were huddled with her in the bedroom) to flee to a neighbor's house. Switzer then forced Stiltz into a closet and shut the door. Even though Stiltz had gotten his hands on the gun, Switzer drew a hunting knife on Stiltz and yelled that he was going to kill him. He charged the man and Stiltz fired the gun. Swizter was hit in the abdomen. He died on the way to the hospital.
Note: During the trial it was revealed that the hunting knife was actually a jacknife and it was found under his body with no blade exposed by the crime scene investigators.
Carl was buried at Hollywood Memorial Park.

Carl's brother, Harold died in 1967. He owned a laundromat and got into a dispute with a customer, ultimately killing the customer, then committed suicide. Both brothers had very tragic endings 😢 Love your channel, Scott!

I was one of Alfalfa's many attempted biographers who for several years attempted to assemble various projects about him to clear up his name and accurately tell his story. But all of his biographers found various problems along the way and for one reason or another we gave up. I'm currently supporting his cousin Zach Switzer's endeavors on completing a project in the wake of the fairly recent passing of Alfafa's niece Judiann Switzer Hancock who passed away in 2017 after working many years of preserving her uncle's legacy and working to restore his good name. FYI, Alfafa's father passed away from a heart condition within a couple years after Alfalfa passed away. The symbol on Alfafa's grave actually isn't of Petey, but to represent that he trained dogs for hunting expeditions. The symbol on Fred's grave is not a gas pump but a laundry device he helped create. Harold committed suicide in the early 1960's after years battling depression which resulted from a car accident he was involved in during the late 1930's which left him disabled and uninterested in participating in more than a couple Our Gang shorts, and the leaf symbol on his epitaph represents his love for nature. Alfalfa and Harold's mother Gladys divorced Fred years before Alfafa's death and remarried, which is why she wasn't interred there, but cremated when she passed away in the mid 1990's. What most people don't know about Alfalfa is he was actually the youngest of 4 children. His oldest brother was stillborn and buried in Illinois, and his sister Janice Switzer lived a normal life, but died of cancer in the early 90's. Alfalfa has a son named Lance Eldridge who grew up not knowing who his birth father was until Alfafa's ex-wife Diane Collingwood (heiress of Collingwood Grain whom married Alfafa for a short time in 1954) told him in the early 1970's.

My great grandfather was an attorney in Los Angeles and he was Alfalfa’s attorney on a case. I wish I had thought to ask my grandmother about it before she passed away. As a kid I just thought it was cool great grandpa had been his lawyer and now I wish I knew why! EDIT After listening to this I remember now that my grandmother said that he had grown up to be not a very nice person and he hired my great grandpa because he had gotten into trouble for doing something illegal. She didn’t know what, though. It’s been 40 plus years since she mentioned it to me.

Alfalfa/Carl's father died from a heart attack at age 55, the year after Alfala was killed. Alfalfa's brother, Harold, tragically died a few years later at age 42. He appeared on Our Gang with his younger brother at least 30 times, but as an adult he sold washers and dryers. He had an altercation with a customer, flew into a rage, and killed the customer. He killed himself later the same day leaving behind a wife and children. (Info from Find-A-Grave.) I wonder what was going on with this family - mental illness, addiction, temper, trauma? We now know lots of child actors were abused and mistreated, financially and sexually. It's all very sad. Alfalfa/Carl was only 31. He was married twice, and one of his marriages lasted less than 2 years. That's very short for the 1950s. Alfalfa/Carl's father-in-law died tragically too. In 1940, at age 41, Lee Collingwood, one of the top 5 richest men in Kansas and owner of a huge grain mill, fell 60 feet from the top of one of his grain silos. His daughter (Alfalfa's future wife) was about 10 years old at the time. I'd like to hear a psychological evaluation of what happened in Alfalfa's life. May he rest in peace.

@@janadeubner9883The brother, Harold, had been in the military, had boxed, and had a concussion at some point. He was an avid hunter like his brother, Alfalfa. Their mother said that right before Harold's murder-suicide, he'd claimed to be in "tremendous pain" from a brain tumor and "went bezerk". Some report he shot and killed a customer while other reports say it was his partner at Speed Queen. The father of Harold and Alfalfa was known to get into heated arguments with Spanky's dad during filming. Alfalfa's parents spent all the money he earned. Both brothers really struggled financially as adults. Alfalfa married his heiress wife just 3 months after being set up on a blind date. She stated that Alfalfa was smart but never learned to read. And some people believe the first incident of Alfalfa being shot wasn't a stray bullet. After Alfala had left his wife and baby boy, he was supposedly seeing another man's wife who wasn't too happy about it. Alfalfa had nearly died years before from a burst appendix. He'd cheated death a few times. I grew up watching The Little Rascals. It's sad that Alfalfa and Harold died so young- and both from gunshots. So many celebrities with great promise and talents end up struggling and pass on so soon. The silver screen paints a beautiful picture for us to enjoy, but it's far from reality. Alfalfa's life seems to be a mixture of good luck, bad luck and poor choices... Yet he brought a lot of joy to his audience. People are complicated like that.

My father grew up in Venice Beach in the 1930s/40s and knew a few of the Our Gang kids. He would tell me stories about Carl as a child and how he was such a mean, stuck up brat as a kid and actually got into a few fights with him. So, when he ended up murdered in 1959 over a debt, my dad was not surprised at all.

I grew up in the 70s/80s… I don’t know anyone my age that never watched The Little Rascals and didn’t know who they all were and what inevitably became of them. Alfalfa’s story was definitely the most tragic as well as the most bizarre tale. Thank you for doing such a great job covering it and for paying respects at his grave (you even put a stone on his tombstone, which I think is really sweet and respectful of you’re not Jewish yourself). You guys really made a great video and covered his life well. Side note: Jackie Coogan, the one you mentioned in that law they made for child actors, went on to play Uncle Fester in the original Addams Family tv series. Surprisingly, he was a cute little kid! I know he was in something with Charlie Chaplin when he was just a boy. His life was pretty interesting and a good read if you want to look into it.

(8:20) In 1959, Carl Switzer borrowed a dog of an acquaintance. Switzer lost the dog. Switzer offered $50 (equivalent to $500 today (2023)) as a reward. Someone found the dog, and Switzer paid that finder the $50 reward. Switzer, then, went to the owner of the dog and demanded that the owner pay him (Switzer) $50. The error in Switzer's logic: Switzer borrowed the dog, and he was responsible for its care, safety, well-being. And Switzer, moreover, was responsible for keeping a watchful eye on the dog and not letting it get lost. But Switzer, on his watch, lost the dog, which means Switzer was irresponsible. Therefore, Carl Switzer is responsible for losing the dog and coughing up the money, NOT the dog's owner. It's like someone borrowing a book from a library and losing the book. Then, that someone tells the library that it's the one that needs to pay for the lost book.

What I find amazing, when you're at a celebrity's grave that's old, that you really are standing only a few feet from the famous person. Because back then, they didn't cremate often. Butch said everyone was afraid of Alfalfa. Bad upbringing made a bad kid and bully. Carried on to his adulthood. He had a lot of bad breaks in his defense. Another interesting and little known fact: Carl Switzer had a very small role in one of the most beloved and iconic Christmas movies of all time. He is in "It's A Wonderful Life" in the the dance scene at Harry Bailey's graduation party. He's the guy Mary is talking with when George spots her in the crowd. He's the one who says "Hey, this is MY date!" George then tells him, "Oh, why don't you stop annoying people!" 😂( And he's also the one who opens up the pool floor for Mary and George to fall through.) Really interesting video, thank you! I didn’t know that he died that way, it’s really a shame that his life took such a turn. Just wanted to mention, when you were talking about Coogan’s Law, named for Jackie Coogan when he was ripped off as a child actor, you didn’t mention that he was well known later as Uncle Fester on the beloved Addams Family TV show- so at least he got a chance to make a lot of money later in life. His story is such a tragic one. Alfie didn't even want to perform as a child. His parents pushed him for the paycheck. He rebelled and was angry as an adult. Tommy Bond (Butch)was the only Our Gang kid who got along with him, as Tommy told me himself near the end of his life. God bless these child stars.

I found this on Wikipedia. Stiltz’s stepson Tom Corrigan was present during the encounter and his account differed significantly from his stepfather's. He told investigators that Stiltz shot Switzer as he and Piott were leaving. After the gun's accidental discharge that almost hit Corrigan, Switzer turned to Piott and said they needed to leave. The two were headed for the door when Stiltz then fired the fatal shot. Switzer never drew a knife, as Stiltz had claimed he had

@hitmixhyepock9405 Obviously I wasn't there, so I don't know for sure if either Tom Corrigan or Bud Stiltz story is true. I can say though that's not a story Wikipedia pulled out of nowhere. Tom Corrigan really did tell his side of the story from what he witnessed, he went to the papers about it. He actually was set to testify to a Grand Jury, but the case was closed too soon. It was always strange to me they closed it so quickly. I don't think it has to do with a conspiracy or anything like that. I think it was just a matter of a swamped police department with a historically bad reputation to the public that had to pick it's battles. I think they just simply didn't see this as a battle to pick as it was a he said-he said-he said and Alfie's bad temper reputation was not ideal for taking something like that to trial.

Big deep dive here. Loved it. We watched the Little Rascals on a local syndicated TV channel here in Dallas. This was back in the day when we had 3 networks - no cable/satellite - asnd maybe 2 syndicated "re-Run" stations and a PBS. I found out that Spanky went to SMU or some university in Texas. Anyway - they played Little Rascals, Dagwood & Blondie, Three Stooges, Laurel & Hardy, etc., a lot of the day - especially before school or on Saturday mornings. I think REO Speedwagon even sampled Alfalfa, Darla, & Spanky on their 1981 song "Tough guys." That made my day for a 10 year old. Anyway - it's a shame he went down that way. One of the films you didn't mention - Carl was in "It's a Wonderful Life." And he plays quite the little rascal when he's bitchin about Jimmy Stewart takin his girl. The swimming pool scene. Thanx for the vid, Scott. Brought back a lot of good early morning black'n'white TV memories. You took'em as you could back then. At 52 - I got way too many choices.........But at least I got this channel to always fall back on. Untiul next time, Take care, my friend.
