Awesome podcast, guys!!! Thanks!! Your dissertation regarding the "bloodlines" of the dogs hit home.. I adopted a beautiful English Pointer who had come from a breeder in Kansas.. the folks who got her had purchased her mother to use in their breeding program.. The Kansas breeder sent the pup along with the mother and told the buyer the pup was "NOT BIRDY and WAS GUN SHY".... the Kansas breeder didn't want her and told the buyer to "do whatever he wanted" with the pup... The buyer advertised her as a "pet/companion only - not suitable for hunting"... I picked up the pup at 4 months of age... this was the BIRDIEST DOG I've ever been around.... she had NO FORMAL TRAINING before I got her. I could (at 4 months of age) ask her "Meadow, where's the birds?", she would start sweeping the ground with her nose and as soon as she pinpointed a bird she turned into a "statue", one front leg up and her tail stuck straight up in the air as a flag. She is out of the line of ELHEW English Pointers and at 15 years of age will still go look for and point birds... (though she DOES love to sleep at the end of the couch!!!) And she's NEVER been gun shy a day that I've had her... never did find out "the rest of the story" about her life in Kansas... Had 3 chocolate labs over the years, but never hunted them... Currently have 7 very well rounded dogs--all rescues!! ... (there's a flashing neon "SUCKER" sign above my farm) and being a senior citizen, there's a LOT of folks who have my number and will call saying they know of an "aardvark" who really needs a home... Seriously, I haven't had the "aardvark call" yet, but it wouldn't surprise me!! Keep up your great work... it's true, there really are NO BAD DOGS! Safe travels friends ❤️🐕❤️ Stay FROSTY... I dabble in both Tom's and Bob's youtube channels and this collab has me locked in for the next 3 hours for sure. Long form conversation like this is the only way to truly get to start to know more about someone. I'm starting to dabble into retriever work with my Lab and like Bob mentioned, I see some stuff I don't like that makes me wonder "What other way can I do X" and it has made training so much more enjoyable my myself and my dog. In a field like dog training, if you are doing everything exactly like your mentor does/did it, you are probably doing a disservice to yourself and the dog. Think critically, grow the field.

Awesome stuff guys! I have a English Lab and have trained him personally. Its nice showing the process and methodology of gun dogs for people who are not apart of the world. I can say that through the process of training etc I have a bond with my dog that most people don't really achieve with basic obedience. Also, he loves every moment we are working together. Loved this. Especially the parts about breeding for different colors and the effects it has on genetics. It would be awesome to have a full conversation for a podcast on that, doodles, silver labs, brindle labs, the issues with breeding dogs to be “extra large” sizes. If you’ve already done that I apologize but would be super educational!

Tom, it seemed as though you were getting a bit emotional at around 2:16:30 when you were talking about the teamwork aspect of a dog in the field. A guy can get that way in the field watching his dog doing his "job" well. It happened to me when my little French Brittany, Rooster, made a 500 yard retrieve on a wounded pheasant. He ran the bird down over a 10 minute chase and brought it back getting the shit kicked out of him by the bird the whole way. He gave me the pheasant and took off like he was saying " that was fun guys, lets go get some more". I really loved this conversation between you and Bob. Great stuff!

This is an amazing podcast guys! As an owner of a redbone coonhound I can really relate to the discussion regarding working dog breeds and their need for fulfillment. Bob's info was fascinating! Would love to hear more podcasts on training working dog breeds ie. hound hunting, game retrieval, upland game hunting, scent detection etc. This is a whole different world for many pet owners and I think it benefits the dog training community as a whole to educate people on these amazing working breeds and how they are trained!

Great show. At the end I would have loved to have asked about the differences in training between males and females.

I adopted a French Brittany Spaniel from a shelter in Spain, where he was probably raised for hunting, and I'm pretty sure his parents were hunting dogs. And this episode is very educating and helping in my understanding of my dog. I learn so much from you guys, thanks.

Awesome podcast! I've been a fan of Tom and Upstate for a while, love your content. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about duck hunting working dogs. Want to mention that I wish silver labs weren't so generalized and looked down on. I bought my first dog (no experience ever) 2 years ago and he is a silver lab, I trained him by myself at home from watching youtube videos (many of them from Tom's upstate channel :D ) and I have not personally met a dog as well trained as my silver lab. He was walking nearly prefect heel since 3 months old, 99% reliable recall, retrieves on command and outs to perfection, with verbal and hand commands, and will do that even with my children. Thanks Tom for your content that helped me do that with my dog by the way! Great Podcast ... want to give a shout out to those amazing silver Labs like my silver lab Midas.

I know there is a segment of duck hunters that use Standard Poodles which might surprise some people but is what they were bred for in Germany originally. The French developed the smaller sizes. I have a Standard that is intact and in a German clip; he does love to retrieve. I am subscribed to Bob's channel now. Can't get enough dog content. Thanks Tom..great as always.

This is what is so excellent. Those of us that stumbled through learning process and mistake we made on our own animals through ignorance have been able to bring us from all walks of life for the sheer desire to bring a better relationship with ourselves and our animals. It doesn't matter the animal I train horses as well and their relationship with the owners make. Love the ability to learn and grow!! No bad dogs!!

TOM!!!!!!!! You have got to see this 16 week old black Malinois, who reminds me so much of Lakota- she's in a rescue program at "The Farm" in Australia. Her name is Abra! Her parents were bite/protection dogs, and she was returned to the shelter because of her gator-like tendencies. You have got to check her out!

It really hits home to hear you guys. Ask Dr. Bob, the dog psychologist 35 years ago, was my first fascination with trying to really understand dogs. IAnd then Cesar Millsn changed my world and gave me the tools and courage to rescue and own a 5 dog pack. That pack is gone now and I'm onto my next gang of 3. My shelter offers an adoption program where we give a trial period of about two weeks. More time we just ask the potential adopter stays in touch. Once you tell us it’s a fit, we process payment and place all info in your name and mail paperwork. And we ALWAYS take a dog back if life circumstances change. It works more for the dog and adopters than us. But we don’t want to fail dogs. We’ve always tried to go above and beyond

I remember seeing a tiktok where a person was saying to look up our dog's breeds and find fulfilment for them in what they were bred for. And me, looking at my adopted APBT-mix, as well as the other people in the comments going "Uuhhhhh.... well... " 😂 But man, game dogs are AMAZING their own right. And I didn't learn how amazing it is for my dog to see her work didn't happen until we both had to corral a raccoon out of my yard WITHOUT killing it. No fear, just "do", like a little lightbulb went off. But learning that she sure as hell would participate in small game hunting with the focus, the drive, the willingness to work with me just opened up a whole new avenue of dog sports that I didn't actually think I'd be interested in - WOW. I think the only thing I wish is that these clubs and sports were more accessible. It feels honestly SO hard to find. I can't think of a single person my own age in any of my circles who actively participate in clubs and I'm really trying to figure out /why/ and how we can make it better.

I can totally relate to fullfilment through watching a dog do what it was bred to do. I recently had a border collie dumped on me. I cant explain the feeling i get watching that dog do what he was born to do. It actually tears me up sometimes because its just so beautiful. (I am a woman, btw, lol- So yeah- Hes dead on with his assessment) That dog has literally changed my life and I have learned so much just so I could train him. Its amazing, really. I am absolutely fascinated with working dogs and cant wait to learn more to help the dogs in my life.

Great podcast. I'm obsessed with the intersection of dogsports and pet dog ownership. Pet gundog training is pretty big in the UK. It's great fun, less competitive, less mysterious to non-country folk, open to a wider range of breeds including non traditional gundogs, the dogs get to retrieve etc. fulfilling their needs and you can work with your dog building on basic obedience etc. I think so many pet dogs and their owners would benefit from more accessible dog sports of all types. It all loops back to making better companion animals and builds mutual respect. I wish I could try them all! Especially enjoyed the long format discussion across different parts of the industry. Always interesting to hear the differences from country to country too. Many thanks!

Bob is a Brittany a good mountain bike dog? or is a herding dog better then say a hunting dog for that activity.

A study completed in the UK on labs and color showed chocolate labs lifespan is only 9 years compared to black and yellow with black nose labs live 12 years. Breeding that chocolate gene decreased their lifespan 30%. That's a huge disservice to the breed. They are also more prone to ear infections, allergies and skin issues.

I’m an 1:11 in. Loving the episode. I would like to 1 day see Garrett Wing from American Standard Dog Training on here with you guys. I think there would be great topics for you guys, especially that he’s a retired police officer and has trained lots of police dogs and not only does he help pet owners with behavioral problems, but he does protect work as well and I think Kyle said he wants to get into protect work so I definitely think it might be a great episode to hear. Garrett has done podcast with other KZfaqrs so I bet if you reach out to him he might be interested.

so i got 2 rottie/labs and i really got into labs and rotties due to my need to know more about them since when i got the first 9 years ago i was a complete noob and i realized it right away, my family had dogs and i lived with dogs all my life but never really owned one. So then, i get this rottie lab corso pup, i realize how little i know about dogs and then i start to learn and learn and learn, fast forward to now, im a dog trainer, a beginner one but still, and i love to listen to these podcasts, even tho hunting is my last care, thanks to this podcast i got info about my dogs that you cant get almost anywhere else, when he was describing the various types of labs i could see the differences live looking at my 2 (which the older i know now she is an american cross while the younger one at first i thought she was an english but i know now she is a british lab). Like i said hunting is my last care in the world to do with these dogs but the younger one i can see her enjoy her do it, she has excellent retrieve already, drops on command only, knows the difference when we play tug or when she just fetches and she doesnt care what she has to go through to get the toy, it can be ice sheets, coldest river possible, wet tall grass, biggest thickest bush with the biggest meanest thorns you can find, she will not care at all. I have this thicket near my home where i used to play fetch with her when she was young and is paying off dividends big time, she learned to use her nose to search for the right piece of wood in a biiiiiig pile of similar pieces of wood and only failed the first few times, did not even get corrected because she didnt bring the right stick or anything cuz it was a game we played. 1 year later i can point in a direction say search and she will go in that direction untill she finds whatever the thing is that smells like me is hidden there picks it up and brings it back with 0 trouble.

Genetics matter for pet dogs too. If a family is looking for a German shepherd.. they want a stable and confident GsD with healthy hips and elbows.. not some reactive nerve bag. The more people understand what reputable breeding is.. the better.

I hate killing any animals and really dislike hunters who kill for sport.

I disagree about the tug of war with a duck dog, I play with mine all the time, but never with a bumper or live duck. In my case at least, she understands context of different toys.

Two athletes can have a baby it does not mean that child will be a good athlete maybe some of the litter bit not all. I have had a Mallinous mum and dad were amazing security working dogs but the pup was not lol your not wrong but it’s not always down to genetics!

This is actually shocking how you speak about adoption. In Europe adoption is a process. You need to apply, pay, shelters find matches. It is a culture here. Many people adopt only. I have never bought a dog in my life. We have just adopted a dog 3 days ago after losing one. You need to work with adopted dog as much as you need to work with a shopped dog. Shopping is not a guarantee you will have an ideal dog and giving an unwanted dog a home, making an effort (is some cases as can happen with a bought one), showing this poor soul a world and getting love back is one of the biggest rewards a human can get. I actually woke up at 4am to write this because I am so shocked. I don't know how it works in the US but in Europe it is a culture. Millions adopt. Sometimes it is hard to meet a person with a shopped dog. Pure evil this is what you are saying.

Birds , it's just about money and more money.leave the dogs to be a dogs.Focus how u can take dogs out of shelters.....and leave the birds to feed there chicks.
