People don't realize Kyoshi wasn't naturally ruthless and assertive, it was a product of her experiences...she was reserved and timid at first. She was countlessly screwed over and had to realize that power drives all men mad, with no exceptions. Plus she lived 230 years, anyone would be weary of BS at that point. And everyone she knew would've been dead, with no one left to ground her. I'm sure she rolled her eyes at Aang for crying over a single kill when she's defeated a dozen Ozais. That's why it's not entirely fair to compare her with Aang who was just a 12 year old kid.

Kyoshi was so old she outlived everyone alive when she was first born, and their kids, and maybe even their kids too. She probably outlived 3 generations.

Something else to realise about Kyoshi is that she would have outlived almost everyone she ever knew. She also would have outlived any children, grandchildren, or even great grandchildren she could have had. After witnessing successive generations of loved ones and relations grow old and die, I wouldn't be surprised if she gave up on relationships, personal connections, or emotions entirely in her later life.

I just realized something while relistening to the first book i had to share The big problem they had at the start of the book was that the normal way of finding the avatar in the earth kingdom wasnt working It was so methodical that it would take them right to the home of the newly born avatar Well in 7 years they didnt find kyoshi Why? Well jianzhu describes ending up in open fields or the middle of the ocean, no clear pattern Then it hit me She was with her parents Course theyd not find her- whod expect the earth kingdom avatar to be flying around on a bisen as a dao fei? Random fields, ice flows, random mountain tops? All perfect places to hide a bison and a newborn child..... They basically had stopped trying by the time kyoshi was set down in yokoya, which was when she was 5. It took them til kyoshi was 14 til they found Yun and believed he was the avatar- how ironic that had they attempted the earth kingdom method again theyd have probably easily found kyoshi?

I still hate that legend of korra got rid of all the past lives

I just completed The Rise of Kyoshi (the book). Kyoshi being bi aside, I think the author really weakened Rangi's character after her and Kyoshi became an item. She was a powerful militant fire bender, but in the end just became the love interest. She was much more interesting as a platonic best friend and protector.

Imagine the creators of both ATLA/LOK doing an animated series of this novel with no strings attached so it can stay faithful to the novel, the potential. And the icing on the cake to have Jeremy Zuckerman score the show too. mannn.

Does anyone else want a show were each episode is the life of a different avatars life so we get a bigger view of this world and maybe even other wars 100s of years before the last airbender

I know some people wonder what Kyoshi be like if she inherit her mother's air bending, but I can guess this: she wouldn't be the next avatar. The cycle had put the avatar after Kuruk as an Earth Bender, not an air bender.

i love the kyoshi books and im so excited for the new yangchen book. the second book dives deeper on yun and what happened to him. i love how much just throughout the books she matures and tries to find more about what is right and also about her past lives.

We NEED a Kyoshi animated series. She's by far the most interesting past avatar. EDIT: I don't care who the best avatar is but in terms of story and material, Kyoshi's story (from her parents to her death) gives creators more to work with and a series worth watching.

technically kyoshi is immortal because she learned from lao ge, tieguai the immortal but she had to die so that her era wouldnt go on for too long

After reading about kyoshi's backstory you can see why she became ruthless. She was an innocent servant girl who did not fight back when bullied. She did not want to be the avatar and was afraid to lose the little she had her job as a servant her few friends and she was unsure of herself. As a result she lost her friend and adopted father. When she showed mercy to a 15 year old boy he spat on her mercy and that got her adoptive brother killed as a result. During her travels through the chaotic earth kingdom she lived as a daofei for almost a year and she realised the world isn't black and white. That even bandits could be more honorable than honest people. By the end of her novel she adopted the daofei code as her values and became the confident avatar we saw in atla.

They should've made the story of Kyoshi the reboot show

What I learned from the Kyoshi novels: Firebenders were always obsessed with honor. Don’t trust earthbenders that much. Don’t trust ancient spirits. And murder is okay, if the victim is _super_ evil.
