The oddly specific observation by Marco Polo about Chinese ships over any inclusion of the Great Wall is more a result of Marco Polo's profession. As a sea fairing merchant in Venice he would be drawn to details concerning ships and currency.

Also the Great Wall in those days would be much less magnificent than the one we observe now, a series of mostly wooden defense lines and border forts, nothing that Adrian's Wall would envy (except for the length) and not dissimilar to Roman limes' fortifications. The modern brickmanship Great Wall was made by the Ming, long after Marco's voyage. The Chinese themselves didn't like to call it "great wall" or "long wall" because of its association to the hated Qin tyranny and, maybe most importantly, there's nothing as the Yuan phase of the Great Wall, as the Mongols did not need to fence off the Mongols (or if they had at all, they did on horseback).
