Murray Gold has always had a knack for writing music that seems to have been around for years, and that's definitely true of "The Life of Sunday". I close my eyes, and it's like watching a silent movie about a girl who has seen tragedy in her life and is trying to work through it by channeling it all into the keys of a piano. It's quite simply modern classical music.

Easily one of Murray's best scores. It's so different from what I was anticipating for Ruby's character. Tragic, maybe slightly romantic/historical waltz. It's up there with Thomas Newman's 'Night Window' from 1917, or even some 19th century Russian classical music. Calling it now, she's not going to have a happy ending, 15 is going to be very lonely.

Ooooo, how interesting! For a start I'm very intrigued by the 3/4 time signature or waltz-esque style of music, it gives off an air of classical refinement and also subtle tragedy, (especially with the serene string accompaniment). Which lends credence to the theory that her main plot line throughout Series 14 is Ruby gradually learning the truth of her family given how she allegedly has a foster mother. (Not to mention that this type of theme could tie in especially well with the period set episode with Johnathan Groff's character.) But regardless, for the grand re-opening of Doctor Who, I'm glad Disney or the BBC didn't demand a catchier or more traditional character theme and Murray Gold was still allowed to give his honest interpretation of what this character meant to him! Gorgeous stuff here, and I can't wait to hear it in the show come Christmas 2023 or early 2024!

Since Ruby is so young and the actress seems bubbly, I expected the theme to be a lot more upbeat. I was surprised by the use of classical instruments. But this is lovely. It has a wistful quality to it, it's like she could be a Ghibli character: a dreamer who doesn't quite fit in, sauntering about life, but who carries a deep, existential sadness within. I don't think there's even been a more sadder sounding theme for a companion than this one. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love it, it's as fresh as it is beautiful and surprisingly cinematic, however that sadness/mournful tone felt throughout the piece gives it a layer of complexity and intrigue that poetically contrasts the incredibly triumphant and cinematic 15th Doctor's Theme which sets up Season 1 (Series 14) from a musical standpoint as one of most beautifully complex seasons of Doctor Who ever conceived. I’ve watched all the current episodes (at the time of writing, the latest episode being Boom) and I just love how well this describes Ruby’s character. I’ve seen a lot of comments on this video from before the episodes began airing who assumed that Ruby would be an introvert due to this theme, but as we know that turned out to not be the case. She’s actually very bubbly, optimistic, cheerful, and caring, as well as impulsive, brave, stubborn, and heroic. Despite all of that, though, she has this melancholic tragedy to her character. Her birth parents abandoned her. She doesn’t know who they are or why they did it or even who she is, and that brings a certain sadness to her that is present in all of her scenes. I feel like The Life of Sunday shows this very well. It’s big and loud and booming at times but also becomes quiet and contemplative at others. It also does a great job of subverting expectations, committing itself to random key changes or note structures that don’t feel ‘normal’ yet still feel cohesive. It’s a good way of musically conveying both how lost and unsure Ruby must feel in her life, not just with her abandonment (which, as we see in earlier episodes, she isn’t quite abandoning her inquiry into yet) but also with the strange occurrences happening around her. Whenever I think of Ruby, her character, and this theme, I remember a quote I once heard. “It’s hard to truly hate the things that got you to where you are.” Although Ruby feels sadness and anger about her abandonment, everything since then-her adoptive family, her friends, her meeting the Doctor-would likely not be the same or would not happen at all had she grown up with her birth family. Just some random disordered ramblings of mine but I’m loving the writing of Ruby’s character so far.

1:20 A dazzling end element??? Could Ruby meet a dazzling end in her first series? This peice is amazing, seems like Ruby will be full of trauma, regrets but also mystery, curiosity, perseverance and the need to get away from it all which will all be bundled up with 15's personality to make the dream duo!
@staticalmite624

This is so interesting to me. Throughout the series thus far, Ruby has been so bubbly and energetic - defiant, sure, but that defiance is almost self sacrificing to me. She only seems to be so whenever its someone else in danger and not her; in space babies she distracts the monster, banging on the metal despite the fact that for all she knows the monster could kill her, in boom when passing the container to the doctor despite the fact that if it goes wrong it'll kill her, and now in 73 Yards- it takes someone else being abused for her to take action to bring down the Prime Minister, and never at any point does she try to take action against the woman standing 73 yards away. Nonetheless, her theme reflects that, you'd expect it to be joyful and whimsical, but instead its slow and sad, but there's this underlying beauty to it. I wouldnt be surprised if the season ended with Ruby having to make some sorta sacrifice

Judging by the tears in the Doctor's eyes, I have a feeling it is someone he knew, like Missy or Jenny. Ruby's Backstory: I feel like they will first show Ruby in a coffee shop or a restaurant working to make ends meet. Her boss is obnoxious and only pays her a certain amount. Then after she gets done with work, she heads to a shop and buys flowers. She then gets on a bicycle and heads over to a cemetery. There we will see tombstones of either her parents or friends and she drops off the flowers to them. Then after that she will meet the Doctor. (This is just my theory, it could be totally different, but I love this theme!)

I love this piece. It starts off very slow and melancholic in its mood and atmosphere and as it continues it builds up and up. Similar to 15s theme this seems to be going for a sort of circus theme to it, idk if I’m the only one who hears it but that’s the vibe I’m getting from it and I love it. I also love that he’s gone for a more classical composition for Ruby’s theme, as it is a nice change from some of the more upbeat companion themes. Nice to see that Murray gold is bringing something new and not rehashing the same pieces like he did for his original run. xx

What a beautiful companion theme. One thing I've noticed is that the fate of the companions is reflected in their themes. Allow me to elaborate. (Warning: This is a LONG COMMENT OF RAMBLING.) > Rose Tyler's theme is somber, yet still there's never a sinister change in note or anything. Rose and her family were sent into a parallel dimension. She didn't die, but she can never see the Doctor again. > Martha's theme is hopeful and shows her fearless personality. Martha leaves the Doctor on her own accord. There's no somber part of her theme. > Donna's theme is bold and raucous, but there are some parts where it dips into darkness, even only for a bit. And, well, I don't need to remind you what happened to Donna. > Amy's Theme is wistful, yet saddening. And she died, albeit peacefully. > Clara's Theme, again, is somber in a way, but has a childlike tone to it. But yeah, she dies. But is temporarily revived again. > Bill's Theme seems to be the only one that this doesn't apply. Her theme is happy and jovial, and sounds unusually like the start of Gary Barlow's Sing. And now we have Ruby's Theme, unless some of those ambient themes you could barely differentiate from one another in Chibnall's train wreck of a tenure were supposed to be companion themes... So now Ruby's, I would say, is the most somber of all. My point is, I think Davies has a very dark fate for Ruby. (Well done if you actually read all of this. Have a ookie. 🍪)

I really love her theme, I actually don't know the themes for the other companions. This is truly the first theme of a companion I actually have fully noticed. I have so far really loved the first four episodes of the new Series. I really think that episodes like Boom, and especially 73 Yards really stand out and feel like real proper episodes of Doctor Who. Not saying Space Babies or The Devil's Chord aren't I guess I just liked the darker tones to it. Even though that Space Babies in of itself is also dark, from the fact of a whole planet refusing to help the babies on the station, but also refusing from stopping the baby farm. Devil's Chord was great too, love the use of the music and really just shined on its own. I have high hopes for this new series, and wonder if Ncuti will be here longer than Christopher was with New Who, where as this to me is New New Who. It will be certainly an interesting road. Especially considering that when you remember that Capaldi's Doctor is the first Doctor all over again, considering he is the first on the Doctor's twelve new regenerations. As Matt was technically Doctor 13 (11), and David was both 11 and 12 (10), with Christopher being 10 (9) and John 9 (War).
