I am a Hindhu, But I always loved Buddhism, because it is so intense & real & straightforward & uncomplicated. I have read 4 noble truths & 8 noble paths many times so far & conceptually i have understood it, but wanted a tool to practice. I mostly play games in my iPhone & I searched for Buddha related apps & I saw one interesting app called "BuDhamma" by Lokesh Hanumappa. This app helps you practice 8 noble path in a cool way with reminders, reports, tests & graphic rich practice summary.

This is a true quality preaching. Monks in Bangkok hardly preach like this anymore. (Maybe they do, but I've never seen one in years) Maybe, it's because majority of Thais are pretty familiar with this kind of story already. Temple in Bangkok, if not drown in money and power, they would be busy with funerals :P

Often, the following from the Dhammapada (153 -154) are regarded as the first utterance: Before discovering true knowledge, I cycled round in myriad births, Searching for builder of this house, Every new birth bringing more suffering. Now, I know you, builder of this house. You will not build this house again. I have pulled down your ridgepole and razed your framework to the ground. My mind has reached the Unconditioned. I have attained the destruction of craving.

I love Buddha because the fact that we can relate to him. Siddhartha had the same problems as us in achieving happiness so we can all relate to him. He is NOT a God or some kind of superior being. He is just human being with curiosity in attaining TRUE happiness.

I was referring to reincarnation (as nonsensical). Though i indeed don't believe in the existence of a separate entity (ruler/creator) in our universe, which is a more vague question, and difficult to answer.

You make a good point fallenwillrise. I think the various Buddhistic schools carry the same burden as most other religions. They have outdated world views that can't hold up in the light of new insights. The odd thing is, i haven't yet seen Buddha talk such specific nonsense. It seems that a lot of the stuff was made up afterwards. A free minded and honest person would admit to himself the fallacies of the culture he was brought up in. The Zen branch is usually more appealing to westerners.

buddha had many lives (lifes) before to fulfill to become as a Buddha. It is not easy to become buddha, not just Suttadha life.

If there is no God, Who makes the decision about the life form one will take in the next life. Someone with intelligence should make that judgement!

(contd.) I don't want to bad-mouth Buddhism, it's one of the most peaceful religions around. That i value, and i'm subscribed to BSWA's channel. I just think that reincarnation is a trait of the same nature as e.g. the christian rapture. This talk, and moreso the one by Ajahn-Brahm(avamso) approach the topic from the assumption that it's true, and do little to address the flaws. I simply don't agree with that.

True that, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, all seem to relate to one thing, armaggeddon... Sadly they seem to be self-fulfiling religions.

There are answers with no philosophy. You dont need to be taught how to inquire and develop your own answers. Just as there are trees, air, water and mountains there are answers. You are that too!

This guy is a sweetheart, and I admire his simple devotion, but after watching several of his talks, I'm getting the impression that if he were a Christian, he might be an evangelical, or at least a "fundamentalist." On another note, I'm a little mystified at the comments about Islam on here. They seem a bit irrelevant to the talk, and a bit angry.

We build ourselves a boogie man, then we feed his hatred all we can. These days he's got a beard and robes, in the past he had a beard and a beret. Before that he had a beard and a pair of horns. I guess the boogie man is in the beard. I guess the most fearsome attribute we know of is the beard. Horns are out of style these days.

@magebaba arresting someone because they painted a Buddha underneath their shoe is as un-Buddhist an action as there can be. Sometimes I really wonder about these "Buddhist" countries. This is why I'm glad I live in America where I can practice the Dhamma in its true form without cultural influences.

Being *occupied* with the *idea* of reincarnation, or enlightenment, is not beneficial either. On the contrary, it's highly contraproductive to the practicing Buddhist, because the idealizing mindset is opposing to the path of realization/liberation: it's clinging and delusion, rather than letting go and embracing reality. Experienced meditators say that in deep meditation one will be able to *directly experience* his or her past lives. True or not, there is no point of arguing about it. :-)

Maybe good a Christian get to go to heaven, but a great buddhist get to go to THE PURE LAND. Who wants to go to heaven when we can to straight to The Pure Land to reach Nirvana? It's the same as who would want to live in CHINA when they can live in the U.S.? If you ask anyone from the third world country they'd tell you that they want to live in America. China is great but America is better. Heaven is great but reaching enlightenment for Nirvana is best. Does that makes any sense to you?

It doesn't matter if he is real or not. In Buddhism, it's important to stick with the present. Buddhism is all about process and practices that has been widely acceptable for more than 2,500 years. It's never about idols or individuals. He's a human like us, and he was long gone. End of the story. You can dig his grave, but it's not the main objective of Buddhism. You aren't going to find holy grail or aliens anyway. We all know that history was mostly written up and unreliable. The most important thing is to take the wisdom that has been collected from generation to generation to solve your problem. Think it through for yourself. That's the core of Buddhism. Atta hi attano natho - Save your own self by your self.

Most story about pass life and fantasy are interpretation and method of teaching for different cultures around the world. Some made it into a long story. Some made it into a song. Olden age society based on verbal communication, and everything just has to be inform of story. So people who can't write can pass it on to others. That's all. Every monk know it. It was always stated that "As what they said to be...." "The folk said..." You don't have to believe the entire story as a history fact. You just have to focus on the objective of the story. What the teller would like to inspire you.

Jill D It's was written in the principal of Buddhism. The principle never claim itself to be entirely true, you are free to interprete and understand however you want. I just happen to believe in it because it sounds reasonable and it made my life better.
