Pinterest is very invasive, I get not wanting to use it. They basically forced us to accept them as the go to image, idea making center of the internet.

I just got back from Tokyo and can confirm there were many City Boys and City Girls. I went with a more casual version with: black hat, blue/white striped shirt, black linen shorts, and some birks/balck tassel loafers. It seemed VERY rare for anyone to be wearing shorts, which I thought was was strange given how warm some of the days were - some women wore shortish skirts. It's wild how well the folks in and around the Tokyo area dress, these people take a lot of pride in their appearance. If they weren't in their suit/tie/work attire, everyone seemed to be well-dressed even on the warmer days. A lot of the classic sailors striped long sleeve shits, an alarming amount of men's jumpsuits/overalls. Great city and people!

the reason for the large amount of white models could be because of the amekaji scene but frankly it /is/ postcolonial beautystandards. even where I'm from in Southeast Asia, LOCAL like very LOCAL, small scale fashion brands will still hire white models. whiteness, even in countries with no white people in them, is still considered the default when it comes to fashion and beauty, a marker of prestige and quality. there's been backlash to it, i think because the beauty scene has started embracing more traditional, indigenous inspiration. this is happening all over Asia, you've probably scene those tiktoks of people wearing hanfu casually in China. idk about Japan

That Google Maps feature is such a life saver, I use it for restaurants, secondhand stores and specialty stuff (cosplay gears, vinyl stores, things like that). I guess my problem is that I like so many things. And at the same time, if I spend too long looking for a certain item I may find that I don't want it anymore by the time I actually find it. I guess that's actually NOT a problem. I just saved myself some money, lol.

I also love Fudge and Cluel. I was working in Japan last year and regularly read (i.e. looked at) both magazines, but one thing--not sure why--but EVERYTHING the models wear is really, really expensive. So it's good for inspo, but that's it. I spent a good amount of time shopping in Second Street (there were a couple other thrift shops I also frequented) and one strategy of mine was to research every item I bought. I only bought Japanese brands. Even the most seemingly run-of-the-mill clothing companies style their items in a way that's unique.

I'm convinced that our brains are wired the same way at this point lol I also make lists for absolutely anything (and notably a youtube playlist where I save my favorite fashion advice videos, and I'm happy to tell you that this one is now part of it 🥳) On maps I frequently use the saving option, especially for thrift shops and vintage shops (in Paris where I live (btw if you ever come to Paris I'd be glad to share it!) to share with my friends and encourage them to shop more sustainably! I personally use the "notes" option on it, adding what you can find there, prices etc! Another thing that I do to try to shop more intentionally is that I have my wishlist saved on a Pinterest board! And I, too, spend months sometimes before choosing whether to buy sth or not! Anyways, thanks again for such an informative video!

Pinterest for sure, I also sketch a lot so what I do is sketch outfits and find things similar to the sketch, I also have a chart with basics for tops, bottoms, shoes, etc. What I do is fill in the charts with specific pieces I want from each category.

This video was soo good!! Personally I've been doing the same thing on google maps (saving places to go to) and following people and saving posts on instagram but making a spreadsheet is something I wish I'd thought of sooner, I love making spreadsheets so I'm definitely going to start doing that now. Also if anyone uses macbooks, the "Stickies" app? is a really good tool, its basically a sticky note and you can put them on any of your desktops, there's different colours and font sizes so it's easy to keep them organized, oh and there's also a minimizer option to make your desktop not as cluttered.

I have my own whole ecosystem but am eager to try and implement a thing or two from you :) I am personally not into the City Boy aesthetic, but when you mentioned Japanese magazines it took me WAY back lol I used to be heavily into gyaru fashion back in the day. And the magazine's were difficult and very expensive to buy (and I was a broke teen) so I used to "read" heaps of scans online. To this day I still enjoy flipping through the physical copies that I do own. I feel like Japanese fashion magazines just hit so differently to any print media I have available to me where I live. It somehow energizes me to love fashion more even when it's not even my style lol

I have a Google spreadsheet of my purchases organized by item type, when I bought it, where I bought it, what colors are present in the piece, etc... a highly specific wishlist with images, watching items on eBay for months to really consider whether I want them... like. love a maps list and i also use it the exact same way like if im in an area and i don’t know where to sit for a coffee i’ll just open my “tiktok recs” folder and see what’s close lol. i also have a shopping list in my notes app! i have deactivated notifs for most secondhand websites because it’s too tempting, but i also use karma to track the prices of first hand websites and that’s landed me some great deals :^) really cool video! i am so nosy abt how people think abt and organise their fashion so this is like deeply satisfying to me haha

if you're really interested in japanese fashion i recommend learning at least hiragana and katakana, you'll be able to read like 80% of these sorts of magazines since they use a lot of english loanwords usually.

"Why are the models in the magazines you mentioned mostly Caucasian?" In Japanese, Western garments/clothes are called yofuku （洋服）, meaning Western clothes. Whereas Japanese clothes are called wafuku （和服）. From a Japanese perspective, Western garments look better on a Western person than on a Japanese person. In the same way, Japanese garments look better or more natural on a Japanese person. I've heard from a Westerner who practices karate, that he wished he was Japanese as he felt that the gi looked better on a Japanese. After WWII, the Japanese were introduced to many clothes from the West and began to wear more and more yofuku. Back in those days, it was thought that yofuku looked better on Westerners. While this may be an old perception I think there still remains that perception even today. If I were to also add something, the Japanese people in the 50's were much shorter in height than now. After the war nutrition and diet in general have improved substantially which led to the height of the Japanese people to increase. So over the years, the Japanese have begun to look better in Western garments but as explained earlier, the Japanese feel that Western garments look better on Westerners. Hence the reason many magazines still use Western models. At least that's my understanding.
