I was raised as Hindu, went to catholic school, became a Unitarian, then an atheist for 20 years. I am now a complete devotee and Thomas Merton has showed me the personal path to finding god. God bless you for sharing this wisdom. 🙏🏾

Fantastic talk, wish he could have gone on longer. Im a recovering drug addict that had an "awakening" after a brain injury that was a direct result of my using. I discovered Merton from the director of a program I was in. Have been strengthening my relationship to God and Merton has helped me without question. Thanks you!

Thank you, Dan! In a class of World Religions last night, we were asked if any of us "knew" Thomas Merton, and if so, what we thought about him and his work. I answered by saying that yes, I had read Merton, but I actually prefer Dan Horan's teaching on Merton to Merton himself - and look, this video is an awesome example of exactly what I meant. You bring God to me in ways that no other human has ever done. I pray for you always.

This video maybe almost a decade old, can Father Horan please mention in a talk like this about the new findings about the circumstances of Thomas Merton death. He did not die in an accident as long reported since but in a political assassination and cover-up (with the coerced cooperation of the Gethsemani Abbey superiors at that time) by the CIA due to his anti-war activism and the widespread public reception of his peace message. Take up and read the recently published investigative report books, “The Martyrdom of Thomas Merton,” and “Thomas Merton’s Betrayers” by Hugh Turley and David Martin. In Merton we have a martyr and saint of the Cold War and of the Deep State. St. Thomas Merton, pray for us!

Merton sought the unitive way. Ergo his international Monks convention at Bangkok. But don't try to be Buddha or Jesus. But be your true best self . Very jungian .oriented toward the light of christ.

I am thinking if Merton were with us this year, surely he would be supporting the Native Lakota peoples in their call for justice for lands and rivers; and 1st nations. I have become greatly discouraged with the RC church, given that it is only a fringe within the church who has ever even heard of Merton or Day. And when they were both alive, they were pushed to the fringe also. I listen to some catholic radio coverage when the pope spoke in D.C. and catholic pundits were loud in putting distance between his words and "official teaching". I have to say it turned my stomach, as much as what I witnessed in this weeks election.

Good delivery but far too many words per slide. Too much taxing on the eyes. Limit to a fewer words per bullet point.

Merton was right. PowerPoint is a distraction. (Would much rather look at Daniel than a screen --- which online ends up being a screen within a screen.)

Presenters want listeners. Audience feedback is useful to presenters so they know what works and what doesn't and gives them opportunity to grow. Marketers pay money for audience opinion research and I gave my feedback for free! You're welcome.

there are no adds attached to this presentation. Not one. No...some are not looking for listeners..sometimes people make content available just to be a blessing. Some gratitude would be an appropriate response to especially the kind of content being shared here. Sheesh.

Yes, it is a blessing for all of us to share all our perspectives and receive each other's perspectives. Yay! Even better that sharing works both ways so we're not limited to one-directional communication. (All Saints Pasadena is awesome! Is there some reason you are assuming that I do not give them donations to operate?) You're welcome! Show me with your gratitude how to be grateful. That's the only way. We can only give gratitude, we cannot demand it. I love All Saints. I love the work they do. I engage because I care. Good institutions like All Saints welcome comments. Why wouldn't they?

Spirituality is universal and it involves cultivation of body, speech and mind to higher levels. There is no god out there that can be bribed by your belief or worship to let you into heaven. And any heaven that admit messy unrefined beings cannot remain a pleasant heaven. Modern research into reincarnation (Ian Stevenson), past lives regression (Brian Weiss) and Near Death Experience (Raymond moody) all point to the conclusion that human consciousness survive death, we live many lives and how we live life is more important than who we worship. This explains why some are born more 'lucky' and talented than others. It also explains why no religion and its believers are singularly blessed above non believers. All these researchers are medically trained and they stumbled upon past lives in their professional practice. Their books have become bestsellers and their methods are successfully replicated by many others. 1. Brian Weiss is a psychiatrIst and hypnotherapIst. His past live regression does not involve talking to any god. He merely bring people back to past lives through hynosis to resolve medical issues (like irrational fear of drowning, fire, height, bodily pains etc) that could not be solved by conventional medicine. The proof the method works is the cure rate. Today, many psychiatrists include past lives regression in their toolkit. 2. Critics claimed that Raymond moody observations of Near Death Experience were his patients' hallucinations. But critics could not explain how people hallucinate with similar encounters when they were clinically brain dead as recorded by EEG. Not only that, the patients while unconscious also accurately reported on events that happened in the hospital and to their loved ones many miles away. This phenomena was replicated by pim van lommel, a dutch cardiologist, and Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon, who books become bestsellers. Today many reported NDE and there is a proliferation of their accounts in the media. 3. Ian Stevenson research into reincarnation involve very young children who reported memories of past lives. Critics claimed these are made up stories but could not explain how these children could accurately identify their past life homes, relatIves, personal belongings and events. These children even bore birth marks that corresponded to past life injuries. Jim Trucker of the University of Virginia is carrying on the research. I have also watched TV reporting on reincarnation memories in UK, china and India.

This idea of identity is to totally incomprehensible. And we won’t know who we really are until we stand before god in death? This is the suppressed premise that you must accept in order to follow the dialogue. But as Kant has succinctly pointed out the first question is not who am I or who is God but how do we know what we know? I’m 11 minutes in and have yet to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. And I’ve listened to many others of the Contemplatives and have yet to hear the importance of Jesus Christ crucified. In short the contemplatives circumvent the gospel altogether. We don’t need to know who we are at the end of time but right now. Jesus said you must be born again of water and the spirit. Then you will know that you are a sinner saved by grace. Now, go and sin no more. No knee jerking, Buddhistic self annihilation, contemplating the “nothingness” of God. Now you are a child of God because of Jesus Christ Crucified. Any other gospel is antiChrist, against Christ.

this is utter foolishenss. jesus is the wayh the truth and the life, the bible is God's word and the power of God for salvation is in the gospel of the grace of God in a blood sacrifice
