We've talked about a lot of failed US tanks on this channel, such as the M551 Sheridan, RDF/LT, and XM8 AGS (I would mention the HSTV-L but it actually did what it was supposed to). With that in mind, I figured I'd switch things up by talking about a modern US light tank that was somewhat successful. The Commando Stingray was a light tank created by Cadillac Gage for the export market, though they did submit it for the AGS program as well. The Stingray aimed to be as inexpensive and reliable as possible, using preexisting and proven components for most of its design. The Stingray didn't end up in service with the US military, but it has been used by the Royal Thai Army. I think it would be cool if Gaijin added it as an event or premium tank at some point, especially since it has a lot of possible configurations.

As a Thai, I'm glad someone talks about the Stingray. Even though It might be outdated, It still can do its job as a recon tank. though our MBT's could use some more modern equipment.

@@thedungeondelver It’s Ukrainian T-84 oplot and there’re about 50 of them but most of our tank force are upgraded Patton’s If you ask me it is still good enough, but it would be nice to have something new like the VT-4 that we’re importing.

@@quinndenver4075 Ground role reconnaissance vehicles still serve various purposes, and ones that are tanks provide an extra niche. Being a tank, they will be identified by hostile combatants as tanks. Thus, if support is called to eliminate said tank, then there will be less fire aimed towards real MBT’s.

it was put in the mantlet in ‘72 as a modification to modernize it and give it an ability to take down helis because I think they tried an ATGM but it didn’t work and the .50 cal was omitted because of the excess of 20mm’s from GIAT and the B modernization program.

Ah...cheap and cheerful, then. So neat to see how tanks and other such military vehicles are so built towards, not necessarily raw power or efficiency, but purpose. We need a cheap tank to sell, make a cheap-but-good tank. Neat.

I always thought the Stingray looked really cool when I saw pictures of it as a kid. Stingray 2 was awesome in Mercenaries 2 as well. One of those random tanks I have a soft spot for and enjoy in games like AW.

Funny enough, when I first got War Thunder, one of the very first things I did was check and see if the Stingray was in the game in the U.S tech tree, either as a regular or premium, and was disappointed to see it wasn't. I actually first learned of it through _Mercenaries 2: World In Flames_ where it shows up as the tank used by the Universal Petroleum faction.

It seems that Gaijin has an aversion to anything vaguely Textron. The V-150 would be pretty obvious as to its inclusion, especially the ones with cannons. As if Italy needs to monopolize the 4x4 carcinogen market.

I never really cared for the LT line in Armored Warfare until I got to the Stingray 2. In one PVE match I showed-up my own teammates who were trash-talking me when they all died and I finished the mission solo. The Stingray 2 quickly became my favorite LT and I gained a new respect for the original and others in the line. It was like a kick to the gut when the devs changed the Sting 2 to a clipped autoloader and it didn't fit my style of play. The way the devs ruined that whole game was practically criminal.

@@wapniak666 Well, PVE was my favorite. I was getting lots of blue stars and having loads of fun and then they shifted focus to PVP, ditched arty, chose not to fix bugs that had persisted for more than six months and then they screwed with the steering of my Taifun II and refused to revert it back. I paid money for that tank destroyer and it was one of my two favorite TDs. That was all bad on its own but the increasing toxicity of players on the forums was the final push I needed to walk away. I loved that game when I first started playing but it was a mess when I left.

There was a guy on a Twilight 2000 forum I frequent that worked on the program when the second go at an AGS started up a few years back. One of the discussed variants was electric, with the space taken by the engine given over to a 4-troop compartment! Where the batteries and electric motors would have gone, I don't know. But they were serious about trying to get it selected. I bet you dollars to navy beans though they ramp up (no pun intended!) the hype for the Griffin and it never ever sees the light of day. They'll build a half dozen that we'll be talking about in 20 *more* years (well, you guys will, donno if I'll be around then!)

Stingray 2 with its packs and some turret electrics upgrades sold alongside a much cleaner up armored Commando would sell. A much faster than MBT production rate and ease of use in light of current events is free real-estate for sales. Yugo Hellcat exploiting goat paths to get behind artillery positions is meta now.

If I'm not mistaken BAE bought the rights and they used a modified design to compete on US Army MPF program. However, BAE wasn't able to deliver a prototype in time so it was disqualified. Therefore, GDLS Griffin II won the MPF program.

@@chesterlynch9533 "Unable to deliver a prototype on time." In light of reality, this sounds like some graft went down. Especially considering GeneralDynamics was involved. GD has been three decades late. Stingray 2 and M8 were done deals in the light tank role for DECADES.

Would love to see Stingray light tank and its variants. In the TT. M41 with stingray turret would fit well in the prem tree. Same goes for M551 with the same turret.

Alright so, I found documents recently on an M2 Bradley with a 40mm CTA gun. In Wargame Red Dragon its called the Bradley COMVAT, I did some digging and I found grainy images of it with documentation, it used the ARES 40mm CTA gun, would be very cool if you made a video on it. Another thing how do you do your information digging? Getting Primary sources and the like? Ive always wanted to know how but no one really has anything on that sort of thing.

The MB-3 Tamoyo happened. Which is essentially a long dog. And the DK1. It makes a nice 25-30 tons cruiser chassis base with enough RHA to actually be a standard light tank.

Could you explore on the different light tanks that were made due to the sudden demand on some countries? . In southeast Asia you would have Indonesia with their harimau and the Philippines with the Sabrah. While countries like China have the VT5 and India with a requirement to have a light tank for their units stained on mountainous terrain. It's interesting that light tanks started to come back despite the dominance of MBTs.

I have a really cool video showing the stingray's crew firing their guns at practice seen from behind the loader. shows the loader picking up vertical ready rounds and loading them, all relatively slowly. heavy and awkward unlike modern tanks with autoloaders or ammo in the bustle which has the right height and momentum. might still be online but I thought it was gone.

Hey Spook what do you think we can expect for War Thunder's 10th birthday? I'm hoping for Yugoslavian tech tree so there may be interesting content. Yugoslavia had a few variations of T 72 that could be added to the game (mainly domestic made M84 and Croatian M95 which is basically modernized M84 developed in '95 after Croatia left Yugoslavia) and I don't really see Gaijin shoving more T 72s in Soviet tech tree. That being said, there were also enough of domestic produced frankenstein vehicles to fill a tree with and even stuff like T 55 hull (iirc) with Hellcat turret.

Showing alot of the M8 Buford AGS also. The updated M8 should have been selected as the MPF but i always suspected the fix was in for GDLS. Nonetheless i am glad we are getting Light tanks for our active an arng light infantry divisions.

Knowing what we know now about modern Tank combat - rarely fights other tank, support infantry, move rapidly. I think the Stingray would do pretty well.

Well it's a light tank with a decent 105 (which still work in today's world) gun, cheap to buy and maintain (barring if you don't use them for jumps) and with some asterisks that put a stupid amount of USD into the thai market to dab on the CCP. At least those are some of the reasons from the top of my head.

I absolutely love the Stingray. I personally think it looks better than the M8 Buford and I played it in Armored Warfare and had a ton of fun with it I genuinely hope this tank gets put into War Thunder! It deserves to be recognized, along with both the XM8 and the Teledyne AGS

I think the problem with US light tank programs is they expect TOO MUCH from a light tank. It's an understandable predicament though, as they have filled it's tactical niche with other pieces of equipment that is now ingrained in doctrine. I feel like (And i'm not a tanker, thanks to my recruiter) US armored doctrine would need to be overhauled to make the request for a light tank more reasonable.

Not really. The tankette also is a thing forgotten. You can build ELC sized tanks for extremely easy transport / cross country. It's not hard to revive the Super Hellcat. Five seats means you can use seat 5 for whatever, like storing drones and meds. 10 ton trailers and pickups can pull ELC sized vehicles as well as airfare. Units have been saddled with overweight / oversized obesity for too long.

Day 12 of Asking Spookston can you talk about an idea I have based off something you said in a past video (think it was the lend lease one). Sweden's tree should be turned into a "Nordic" Tree, which would have a Norwegian and Finnish tree, for the following reasons Sweden lacks heavies, and premiums. Plus they have a general lack of creative tanks as most are similar or copy pastes Norway made multiple tanks, concepts, and experimental designs. Finland made some tanks, modified certain soviet tanks (BT-42, KV-1B), and also captured multiple tanks Finland already exists within the Swedish tree with some vehicles, plus it could be an excuse to add Heavy Tanks to the Swedish trees like the IS-2, plus maybe even a T-34 This is in general, but remove the KV-1B from the German tree (they already have a KV-1) and move it to Sweden.

Wait whats the difference between the fcm5 and the commando stingray again? I couldve sworn the 2 were the same

I think you mean vfm5. But they're not the same. Vfm5 used a different hull (CCV-L)and transmission as far as I can tell. Also the gun system was a Marconi FCS. The vfm5 used the Bradley transmission and a different Detroit diesel engine. XM8 had an autoloader but stingray didn't. Stingray also had a completely different turret designed for retro fit on different tanks including the sheridan. Funnily enough these tanks were actually developments of the armoured gun system programme which is what produced HSTVL. The LAV 75 variant of the stingray saw combat and it wasn't as effective as hoped.

XM8 was the original FCS for the AGS programme. The remains of xm8 was then moved over to the AGS M8. Where 2 divulging designs came from. VFM5 or AGM M8 and Stingray. AGS is where we get the HSVL from. Stingray is a "cheapened" M8 just like VFM5.

Spookston do you have any tips for grinding Russian ground or air I’m at the T 44 for tanks and Yak 9T for air.

Im not spookston, (duh) but try CQC. The T-44 has pretty good armor for a medium, similar to the panther. There is a shot-trap, but its hard to hit. Try and rush german heavies or snipe. (May be wrong, as i main Isreal and the US rarely. Thats just what ive seen it beibg played effectivley.
