The Lighting Setup That Makes Me the Most Money | Inside Fashion & Beauty Photography: Lindsay Adler

Want to know which lighting setup helps me land the biggest clients and make the most money? In this video, I will show you how a simple, yet well-planned lighting arrangement elevates my photos (and profits) by offering options without adding extra overhead.
The key to commercial photography isn't necessarily a complex setup but rather understanding your client's needs and being adaptable. With this setup, I captured three different shots using one, three, and four lights. This lighting setup delivers a broad, soft light that not only flatters the skin but also evenly illuminates groups of people - making it extremely versatile - and my typical go-to.
One Light:
Use an 8x8 foot Westcott Scrim Jim, a large diffusion panel that softens the light source.
Light the scrim with a bare-bulb strobe (a light with no modifier) from one side. This hits the scrim, spreads out, and creates a broad, soft light source. This setup is perfect for evenly lighting a subject or group, from head to toe.
Three Lights:
Add two more strobes on either side of the background. These should have small white umbrellas attached to bounce the light back onto the background, illuminating it evenly.
Four Lights:
Add a fourth light - a strip softbox - underneath and in front of the subject to fill in the shadows. This creates a 'fill light' effect, reducing the appearance of wrinkles or folds in clothing by lightening the shadows underneath.
Remember, the number of lights and the arrangement depends on the specific needs of the shoot and the desired effects. But for me, this is the lighting setup that has consistently boosted my income and landed me more clients.

I do agree with the standoffish nature of photographers. They seem to think that there is some esoteric knowledge that they are keeping us from. When there is so much information out here in books, videos and just plain peachy up and coming photographers.

I did collaboration a few times on swim wear and clothing. It good to have a backup camera or extra battery at a rental studio if you forgot to recharge battery for personal work if doing action shots also.

I've never used a scrim before, can't wait to try this! My favorite between the looks you photographed was the one where the background was slightly darker because I liked the contrast between the background being slightly darker and the outfit was lighter. I loved the color of that background.

I used this setup today for a clothing shoot today subbing the scrim for a 59x79 collapsable diffuser and only the one bare bulb. Worked SO well! ...and so much easier than the way I was doing it before. Thank you Lindsay.

I'm curious, could she have illuminated the scene solely with constant video lights instead of strobes? Couldn't she have replaced the two rim lights with video lights equipped with softboxes? why scrims? They're massive wouldn't a large 3-foot softbox or bigger have the same effect.

Maybe you allow a slightly off-topic question: >> What's the more ideal combination for someone who is doing nearly 50:50 in Travel/Landscape and Portrait photography? 1) RF 24-105 f/4 & RF 70-200 f/2.8 or 2) RF 24-70 f/2.8 & RF 70-200 f/2.8 ...looking forward to the upcoming R5 MkII to switch from my 5D MkIII with the EF 24-105 f/4 Kitlens and my old Sigma EX 100-300 f/4... as I am not sure if I should spend the extra 1000€+ for the 24-70 f/2.8 🤔. I also have to say that in the last years I switched from 80% Travel/Landscape and 20% Portrait to the before-mentioned 50:50. Thanks in advance for your tipps! 👋

I'd like an answer to that question as well, especially because I so often read that tethering a Cannon (in my case 1Dx Mark II and 5D Mark IV) to Lightroom Classic can be troublesome.

F/11, but camera settings don’t really matter. You can achieve the same exposure with different cameras settings.

If you’re on a hard surface, it shouldn’t tear the paper. If you have carpet, the heal could puncture the paper.

while i am more than competent to shoot something like this, getting work has been the bane of my existence. i mostly do PJ/Sports for a very small web based news site and a local semi-pro hockey team, ive offered the local historical museum FREE HEADSHOTS to bring their presence up to current year (probably last done pre-pandemic, if even then) and they'll 'get back to me'. been waiting 3 weeks now. another bid for a Double Tree internal use headshot was quoted at $300 for a half-day shoot (they had 6-7 people needing new images) and apparently that was too expensive for them. i dont get it. im about to give up....

This might not be the answer you want, but what I used to do when I was actively looking for portrait work, was charge by the hour. I would say up to 10 people, $150, 4 images each, basic color correction. If they wanted some actual retouching then I’d charge $50 each image. That $150 price range almost always got me booked, and then that booking always led to more work as they would ask for portraits for their family members, events, etc. I did my best to take a great image sooc, then spend very little time in Lightroom. In that hour, I would let the client know they needed to be ready by the time I arrived and set up. Most times, I was done in less than 30 mins. Yes yes, I know we care about our work and want to be artistic, but I found most headshot portrait clients need it done quick because they have to do it. So $150 didn’t break the bank, and they were usually ecstatic with their images and it kept me busy. Btw, my base price was always $150 an hour. So if it was just for a bank president, I still charged $150 an hour if it was just for 1 person.

@@BUCKSHOTSTV thanks! i eventually did get to shoot the museum. they allotted me 15 minutes for each staffer although, most of them were interested in the 'one and done' approach. i got through them pretty quickly, i was tethered and they got to see the images before hand and of the few (i think there were 10 folk) that allowed for more than just one or two to ensure open eyes, i had them pick the one they liked best and i made a note of that. im still trying to get some paid work in the headshot/portrait genre but its rough going! im glad im still getting a paycheck for playing with robots and electricity and such!
