The historical origins of our systems of law and taxation are found in agrarian landlordism. The system evolved but without removing the presence of rentier privilege. Today, the system in almost all societies is some version of agrarian, commercial, industrial and financial landlordism. The main differences are differences in the degree to which the state affects a redistribution of wealth. Social democracy mitigates the fundamental redistribution of wealth from producers to non-producing rentier interests. The solution to the problems was, I would argue, best articulated by Henry George in the late 19th century.
