Anxiety and alcohol use disorders commonly co-occur, with one in every three people with an alcohol use disorder also meeting criteria for an anxiety disorder. Co-morbid anxiety and alcohol use disorder presentations are typically more severe, and less responsive to standard treatment approaches. If left untreated, anxiety and alcohol use can fuel each other in a cyclical relationship whereby each serves to maintain and exacerbate the other. This presentation will provide an overview of current evidence on the relationship between anxiety and alcohol use disorders, and psychological management of these co-occurring disorders.
This webinar will lead to:
- Understanding of typical patterns and issues relevant to the management of anxiety and alcohol use disorder co-morbidity;
- Awareness of developmental pathways, and strategies for preventing alcohol use disorders among anxious young people;
- Introduction to an integrated CBT approach to improve treatment outcomes for co-occurring anxiety and alcohol use disorders.
