Even in fiction it is difficult for me to imagine a world where, even during the holidays, people would completely ignore a poor, freezing, starving little girl. Why did the people wait until after the girl died to feel sorry for her? That, I think, was the lesson the author of this story wished to convey about the plight of the poor and the homeless. That, and the belief that the poor, neglected little girl had, thankfully and most assuredly, found a better place.

Things haven't changed, much. I was recently scolded for giving someone $ in a parking lot because "They're mostly scammers." Knee-jerk despising of poverty lives on.

This kind of story was more common than you think. There were child workers in the Victorian England who worked long hours in factories to make pennies to help feed their relatives and parents.

I first heard this story on an old-fashioned 12-inch vinyl record. It was a collection of tales by Hans Christian Andersen. I recall listening to it several times and always being stunned by the bittersweet ending. Later, I learned that Andersen wrote this story to stir the conscience of the citizens of Copenhagen, where there was a wide gap between rich and poor and little to no organized charity for those in need. Bravo to the reader and the artist who illustrated this classic. Sadly, I think many of us still turn a blind or judgmental eye to the poor and homeless.

People don't just turn a blind eye, society creates the poverty and homelessness. There's no prosperity for middle class on up WITHOUT poverty and homelessness. that's how evil society is.

Well I wasn’t expecting that ending🥺😢🥹. When she looked up to the Christmas tree and followed the burning candles 🕯️ and saw a falling star 💫 it was her soul that was dying. Then the next match showed her grandmother coming to get her. Then lighting the remaining bundle of matches her grandmother came and scooped her up and they both flew up to the heavens. Now the little girl is forever free from the misery of being poor, cold and hungry. 🥰😌

This story and the sadness goes back to victorian times and still this sadness goes on and it's 2023 the poor the homeless and soon to be 2024. A new year and still there will be homeless people and young people and animals that need loving homes and are on the streets dieing not so much from the cold weather just plan neglect and who are hungry that comes with homelessness and this empty governments and who's ever to blame. This story was about a poor little girl who died of the cold but ends up with the warmth and love of her beloved grandmother and the blessing of God's Heaven😢

Though it breaks our hearts to hear a story like this and to know that this goes on every day in all parts of the world one must remember the moral of the story, that this is just a journey that we’re on down here and that this is not our home. We have something more beautiful waiting for us with God in Heaven, our real Home. As the Bible says, “Eye has not seen and ear has not heard the wonderful things that await those who follow the Lord”. Merry Christmas everyone and God Bless you!🙏🎄.

I"m adopted.. aka a trafficked child. An adult survivor of being a trafficked child. I'm Indigenous, Cree, adopted by a rich white family. I was unloved, mostly teased and made to stand out in humiliating ways. I learned to excel, so I wouldn't be targeted. didn't work. My skin made me the target, not my intelligence or behavior. I always had to be twice as good to be considered half as good. I loved this story as a little tiny girl. I identified with the little match girl... her alone-ness. When she dies, it's a release from the coldness of being alone while there's people all around you.

I guess it is hopeful in that those of us that see this can look beyond ourselves and our own families at Christmas (and throughout the year) and do all we can to help those that are suffering. It is also hopeful in that we don't have to fear death. We will be taken by our loved ones and escorted into heaven. Death is not the end.

I wrote this poem after driving on a dark and rainy night several yrs ago with my mother and sister in the car with me. Throughout our lives We may believe Each of us has an angel Sent to us from heaven With miracles up his sleeve. I stand here before you And hold this as true My angel was with me That night I could not see. I drove not alone Loved ones came too, Front seat and back The rain blocked our view. I stared straight ahead To go on the green The car turning left Was not to be seen. He sped to his turn Not having the light I started the same As having the right. It would have been deadly, Instead it was strange My wheel jerked to the left As the light did its change. His car moved to speed My car had moved too, The hand that had helped me Was not mine to heed. Believe it or not, Dear reader, it's true My angel was with me My faith born anew.

I'm not crying...you're crying. I remember hearing this story when I was a kid. I was stuck in the hospital over Christmas and remember having this story told to us. On Christmas Day, I got to open my gift...it was some kind of 'Ker-plunk' game. I played it with the other kid, named Hubert, who I shared a room with. His family was fairly poor, so all he got was a coloring book and an eight pack of crayons. So when it was time for me to finally go home, I told Dad I wanted to give Hubert my game. I was worried that he would not make it out of the hospital, because he had been there for a long time before me. I though that he could at least have fun for a little while, if he wasn't going to live...just like the girl in this story. He did live after all and we became friends that winter. Even though we've grown apart, moved away, and have not been in contact since...I still wonder if he is still alive...and remembers me? It's stories like this, along with the spirit of Christmas that brings out these memories and feelings. It's why I look forward to Christmas every year. Thank you for sharing this story...Merry Christmas!

Had to click, I have remembered that story from my childhood it always comes to me this time of year. It ‘s horrible and sad the abuse and neglect but the ultimate end gives hope in a place beyond abuse and neglect

It was a sad story. When it started telling the story, I was hoping of happy ending. But the imagination of the little girl went so far to the distructiin of herself.

Thank you for this wonderful narrated version and I had been thinking of this the other day. Maybe our universe knew I was. This I was always moved by and again after watching yours. Maybe next will be the Selfish Giant. 💚💚💚

The poor and unwanted have always suffered amidst plenty. It was so in the era when the story was written and is still today. The comfort offered in the tale is the memory of her beloved grandmother. After experiencing visions addressing her lack of warmth, food, and holiday splendor, her final vision was of a much missed loving grandmother who helped her face a cruel death without fear. The first tragedy is that the little girl had no one living she could rely on to protect her from worldly cruelties. And her suffering was invisible to those with hardened hearts. The second tragedy is the world is still filled with too many vulnerable children amidst a sea of hardened hearts. This tale, I believe, is for adults more so than children and is meant to make them ashamed that any child should face such a fate in a world with sufficient wealth to prevent it.

My teacher told me this story when I was a kid but still cannot believe it when she said the girl died. I thought it was too extreme. Lol!
