If you thought the Little Mermaid was all sunshine, beaches and picnics, well, I’m gonna burst your bubble. (Sorry!) How could the tale of a nerdy aquatic princess who “just wants to be where the people are” possibly have anything creepy and morbid going on? Kelp, let’s crack open this Disney Princess’s disturbing origin story in this animated adventure! Turns out Ariel’s life was not so carefree and (definitely not!) painless in Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid...” and “Happily Ever After” in this tale is all a matter of perception. So, join me in exploring this story of soulless ancient beings, eel whisperers, and even windy ghosts!

I remember my mom would read this to me when I was a kid, and she always kissed my forehead afterwards and said "Don't ever let a man become your whole life. Cuz he will fall in love with someone else and leave you heartbroken for all eternity ". That was her moral. And yes... She's divorced.

You should go to Tivoli, go to The Flying Trunk ride (pretty sure that’s what it’s called) it’s basically a bunch of Hans Christian Anderson’s stories, so go. While you’re there, get a French hot dog bun with a red sausage and French dressing, best things in existence- boy I miss Denmark, my farfar (danish for father’s father) turned 80 last week. Lol, jk you’d have to go to Copenhagen to find the place. 𝒟𝒶𝓃𝓂𝒶𝓇𝓀 𝑒𝓇 𝓂𝒾𝓉 𝒽𝒿𝑒𝓂...

To be honest... I really like the original little mermaid. It's.. It's really depressing, but, it shows how true love could be. It's really cute.. And really sad, but I love it i.. I don't know. It leaves a soft warm hole in my heart. She truly loved him. In the end, she wasn't mad. She loved him, she'd do it all, just for him. It turns out I'm a sap for good stories. Edit: holy crap. I never realized the morals to this story before. Don't give up your voice and identity for someone else. Do not idealize your life with them, as if your life has no meaning and is just "sea foam" without them. It will be a painful journey and ultimately unsatisfying to keep chasing someone who doesn't love you. She didn't kill the prince because she recognised that it had been her choice/fault the entire time- he was innocent and she still cared for him. In the end, it sounds like she still has a chance for meaning in her life, though she is still doing good deeds for others, still unrecognised for who she really is.

I’m actually cheered up by this! I heard the story over and over again but I always heard it end with her turning to foam, she no longer exists and all her suffering and pain is all she got from this whole tale so now knowing that she actually did get the promise of an immortal soul and 300 years to dwell among the humans doing kind deeds actually brightens my day!

This story is so poetically tragic and sad that I find it very beautiful in a strange way. Disney cut out so much of what made it that way. Dumbed it down for the kids. To quote Don Bluth, “Kids can handle anything just give them a happy ending.” This story may not have a traditional good ending, but I’d call it hopeful and optimistic if nothing else.
@ratboy2
@ratboy2 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe children would be able to appreciate an ending that isn't ideal if they were actually exposed to media that had "bad" endings. I remember thinking about how silly it was that movie endings were all "perfect." Unrealistic. I don't think younger children need to know everything about the world, but they can handle a little sadness in a movie. The first time I saw a movie that didn't manage to keep all the protagonists happy and alive, it was a foreign movie and very eye-opening. Sad that I had to watch a film made for audiences in a completely different part of the world just to see a realistic negative end.

It's beautiful because it's about unconditional love and has a bittersweet ending. She does not get her prince and she cannot bring herself to kill him, so she sacrifices herself instead. That leads her to transcend what she is and become a daughter of the air, earning her soul. It's a beautiful message and no it does not mean that you should sacrifice yourself over a man (you really shouldn't though). It means love without expecting anything in return and wishing that person happiness. You will get something better if you do this.

Disney changed aspects of the story that didn't need to change ... The statue of the human littlest is obsessed with IS the reason for her to gravitate towards the prince because he looked identical to the object of her infatuation ... The relationship between the characters is better written, their motivations are way better defined,the world as well as the characters are waaay more fantastical ... The complaint that Ariel likes Eric because he's hot HAS merit ... The connection between her and Erin doesn't exist ... She's not obsessed with the statue like in the book,so her attraction towards Eric becomes much more shallow ... The book has much better narrative and characters ... Walt Disney changed the stories he adapted yes, but he also elevated them ,added new stuff ... Snow White's personality as well as her relationship with the dwarfs was a Disney addition ... Cinderella being an optimistic dreamer was also a Disney addition ... I could go on a rant about the topic, but I won't ... There are other adaptations both live action and animated that do a much better job at adapting HCA's story without f*cking it up ... The story at its core IS A TRAGEDY , turning it into happy ever after ruins the entire point of the story ... Walt Disney wanted to turn it into a feature, but never did because the story is so meticulously written that every aspect of the story LEADS DIRECTLY TO THE CLIMAX , and changing aspects of the story will greatly impact the entire thing ... My favourite version is a 1968 Russian animated version ( it's available on KZfaq with subtitles ) ... The 1989 film is good , but not as good as the story Andersen wrote ... From a writing perspective they heavily downgraded the original tale ...

Happy endings aren't "dumbing it down". It just makes for a nicer watching experience. Life itself is already sad enough, why make sad movies? I read the story as a kid and absolutely disliked it. I always preferred the disney ending.

I used to own a movie where the events went down just like the original story, minus the gore and blood. In that one there was no grandma, the love triangle was actually a love square because the princess had a buddy who she got with. Her father honestly pressured the prince and the princess into their engagement but it all works out in the end and the littlest mermaid and the prince get married. Idk if she ever got her voice back though, I like to imagine she did.

I really dont understand why people is perfectly ok with Disney stealing stories and adapting them for today kids but will never accept that their adapted story gets readapted,i mean Disney versions dont have any respect for the originals,they dont even respect the hair color (almost every Disney princess who was adapted from another story had black hair,they were not blond or redheaded),but then you expect the live actions to be EXACTLY the same,because any little deviation is an offense for "the original" wich is not even original.

I knew this since my late childhood years, that's exactly how it was in Andersen's book. It might be more bloody, more miserable and more unfortunate, but a lot of times that's how reality is. Andersen isn't a bad scary tough-face storyteller, he just doesn't wanna lie to kids and sugarcoats things when so often life doesn't. The Cinderella and a few other tales also have the original, more realistic and "brutal" versions.

In the original story written in its original language; Danish, it never mentioned little mermaid sewing her legs together. A lot of american/canadian/Australian/English book publishers have translated the original story so many times and made so many little alterations along the way. 🇩🇰

I learned about the dark version when I read Beastly by Alex Flinn. A way better than Twilight and my only favorite romantic novel based on Beauty and The Beast when hitting puberty. In the book (different from the movie) the protagonist, Kyle, is attending a therapy group online where others are cursed/part of different classic fairy tales. It so happens that The Little Mermaid or Silentmaid as her username tells about how she got to live on land and yknow “If I cant make the boy fall in love with me I’ll turn to Seafoam” SPOILERS she did, sadly. You should really give the book a read! It’s amazing and so is the movie but I keep reading the book all over again to the point the pages are gonna fall out. There’s also a another twisted *tail* based on The Little Mermaid which is a movie called The Lure and oh boy that movie has everything yet twisted. Finally the whole Sky mermaid reminds me of that one Episode on Flapjack (if y’all remember the good old days of CartoonNetwork)

This was the version I first heard as a child, and the first time I heard it, I found it so creepy I didn't even want to hear the end. Which made the Disney movie scarier for me too, because I thought Ariel would die. A lot of HC Andersen's stories are pretty creepy. The Story of a Mother comes to mind. BTW, PL Travers (who wrote Mary Poppins) took issue with that ending: "'But a year taken off when a child behaves and a tear shed and a day added whenever a child is naughty? Andersen, this is blackmail. And the children know it and say nothing. There's magnanimity for you."
@ratboy2
@ratboy2 3 жыл бұрын
Some fiction writers love putting threats towards children in their stories. That's why scary myths exist. If you do bad things, you're bad and will hurt someone. If you do bad things, you're a naughty child and won't get nice things for Christmas. Etc. Some myths exist for ok reasons (like keeping kids inside and away from rivers when they're young), but it's sad that parents have always felt the need to scare their children into being good, instead of just raising them well. Be good or you'll suffer.

I wasn't sure if anyone else compare this to Corpse Bride due that Emily was simply obsessed of Victor after accidentally putting the ring on her and not realizing it was a misunderstanding because all she was seeking is true love, than lets him go after feeling bad for him that Victoria married her murderer leaving Victor to give up his own life. She simply spares him and sacrifices herself because she loved him despite he wasn't hers in the first place than dissolves into butterflies at the end.

Emma Broegger, it is widely accepted that he was bisexual, and although I don’t know if he actually wrote the little mermaid for a man, it’s simply not true that his affections were at all limited to one sex. His own journal suggests many habits that contribute to him being bi, and along with the people who knew him agreeing, I think it’s safe to say that he probably attracted to both genders.

Yall wanna know something that I never see anyone mention about The Little Mermaid? Even in the animated movie version of Hans Christian Andersens The Little Mermaid, it's still not gruesome like the original story it follows so closely. They don't truly show the depth of how much Marina/Littlest suffered. I mean sure, they showed her suffering, they showed her broken heart and it was a sad movie, but they didn't show how she physically suffered (having her tongue cut out, her tail splitting feeling like it was being cut apart, how each step she would take with her new human feet would feel like she was stepping on knives and would cause her feet to bleed, etc), they didn't even mention it, they watered the movie down so much and made it more child friendly even though it didn't have the happy ending Marina wanted (which is still good it taught kids that not all stories have happy endings and not everything goes how you think it will. The happy ending and dope musical numbers was what the Disney version was for). To truly understand how she suffered and what she went through, you'd have to read up on the original story instead of relying on the movie version of the original story. That's why I appreciate this animated explanation of the original story so much more. It's sad how far she allowed herself to go for a man who didn't even want her the way she wanted him, and to be something she really could never be. It's all the more heartbreaking and really makes you think you should be more accepting of yourself and appreciative of what you have.
