I think the lukewarm reaction to Dalton was because his serious take on Bond was such a jarring shift from Moore's quippy, aging lounge-lizard version. Craig was more fortunate, in that the previous 007 flick ("Die Another Day") was so ludicrous people were hungry for a more serious Bond flick. Dalton wasn't so lucky.

+abc64pan Problem is that the Moore years had effectively turned Bond into a comedy franchise by 1985. The Dalton era was too much of a shock to the system to most of the public at the time, but looking back it helped rehabilitate Bond as a serious action franchise, even if it wavered again towards the end of the Brosnan era.

Which is a shame, because For Your Eyes Only showed us a harder Moore and he didn't start out as quite as funny as he was in later installments. Though Craig is great, Dalton remains my favorite Bond. When I read the Fleming novels, I picture Timothy Dalton as Bond. And for good reason: He matches Ian Fleming's physical description of Bond exactly, and has the same attitude towards his job when he gets an assignment he disagrees with ('If M fires me, I'll thank him for it'). He smokes a lot, drinks a lot, and has a tendency to fall in love against his better judgement. He will kill without a second thought, but not randomly ('I only kill professionals'). He fully expects to die young and lives accordingly. And woe be unto him who gets on Bond's bad side. Timothy Dalton is James Bond.
@AD-kv9kj
@AD-kv9kj 3 жыл бұрын
I liked Craig much more in Casino Royale than any of the others he's done. I felt he had huge promise, but a. I felt they massively underused him, just kept regurgitating the exact same story over and over again (angry boring Bond leaves the service for some reason, then he has to come back eventually when a big terrorist villain shows up - he does some parkour chasing and gets tortured), and b. I felt he got more and more stiff and awkward in the role. I also just have not been able to picture him as James Bond. He just doesn't look anything like Bond. More like some Russian henchman masquerading as 007. Dalton was not only a better actor than Craig, but he looked exactly like James Bond should and generally acted more comfortably in the role. When Dalton had to be angry, he was REALLY realistic, but he could also chill out and have a smile and a laugh now and then. I also think Dalton did humour better too, it was just dry and not obvious lame dad jokes as people expected after Roger Moore. For example, I laugh far more genuinely at scene like Dalton's Bond telling Kara "NO. WAY!" to going back for her cello while they have only moments to escape the KGB, only to instantly cut to him sitting looking annoyed in the car as she runs out of the conservatoire with the cello and they shove it in the back seat - "Why didn't you learn the violin!" Humour like that felt not only more genuine and funny, but more part of the James Bond character, not tacked on dad jokes and stupid gags written by morons.

One of my favourite Bond movies, and absolutely love Dalton as Bond. Such a shame he only played him twice but the two movies he played him were very strong in my opinion, with License To Kill being another of my favourite Bond movies. Not sure if I prefer Dalton or Craig, both are equal in my book with Dalton bringing a serious portrayal of the character and understanding that his version of Bond inspired Craig (think I read somewhere Craig took a lot of notes from Dalton's version of Bond for when he was filming Casino Royale)

I love this one. Dalton is my favorite Bond because he played it so convincingly serious. He is supposed to be the greatest super spy on screen single-handedly taking on megalomaniacs with arsenals and small armies...why would he be funny? It sometimes worked for Moore when he took on small baddies but it was often over used and became farce. Even though he only did two films it is clear that he created a new Bond that changed how spies in films would be delivered from then on.

Excellent review! As always. Dalton was outstanding IMO. Those US reviewers really didn't have a clue about the original character, basing their views on the latter Connery & Moore bastardizations instead. I agree that the first half of the film is superior to the rest. The Eastern Europe setting & its atmosphere goes a long way towards this. As does the whole 'the sniper was a woman scene', where Dalton's look, performance, & Barry's sublime score are in perfect harmony. As for who's better between Dalton & Craig, I'd nod towards Dalton too. Craig's performance in Casino Royale was top notch, but in subsequent outings, the films have got more OTT (heading back to Moore's territory), & this has stifled Craig's gritty interpretation. It's a great pity that we didn't get to see Dalton in more 007 films.

The two Timothy Dalton entries are IMO the best of the whole series. Great reviews such as your TLD and LTK ones help raise public awareness of the fact. Funnily enough, the exterior scenes of Kara's apartment, as well as the tram railyard are both located within two blocks of my home in Vienna (where they shot all of the "Czech Republic" scenes due to film permit problems). I have a couple of funny stories linked to the shoot- none of which I experienced first-hand as I wasn't even a year old at the time. 4:52 - I know it's a shame, but story-wise he blows up the awesome Aston Martin V8 Vantage because 1) it serves as a distraction to increase their chances of escape while taking out some of the pursuers and 2) MI6 probably has a rule that no technology shall fall into enemy hands. 5:07 - They actually created a miniature Afghanistan landscape for the close-up shots instead of front projection. I can highly recommend this Making of Book, by the way: www.amazon.co.uk/Making-Living-Daylights-Charles-Helfenstein/dp/098441262X/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1417097900&sr=8-4&keywords=The+Living+Daylights

Dalton was great, shame he didnt get a third film, probably would have been his best.. he was a great Bond, balanced, deadly and professional but still with an emotional awareness of his actions and their consequence.. you can see the professional killer fighting the man inside, and the sadness and regret it creates inside him.. a great actor.

Too true! I really liked both of Dalton's forays into Bondage. I actually saw both of his 007 movies at the theater; a rarity for me indeed, as the last one I caught there was Moonraker (when I was pretty young!) It's a real shame about the legal wrangling that killed a third outing for him, I think he brought a grittiness to the role that was sorely lacking at the time. He has great eyes, too - laughing, expressive eyes. I think an actor's eyes can often say more than most people would give credit for. Thanks for another great vid! Rikki Tikki.

Your reviews are so awesome especially with the footage compilations at the beginning and end which really beautifully highlight the films better than any trailer can. Those parts online would make great videos standing on their own. You are in a way the "Retro Ahoy" of movies.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've laughed at multiple times, but I feel the Living Daylights is one of the best Bond films and even if this didn't involve James Bond, the film was outstanding on its own. Dalton did a terrific job and yes it was so refreshing to see a serious take on James Bond instead of all the clowning around and one-liners. I was SO disappointed in License to Kill. I felt it was almost a glorified Lifetime movie with some of the writing and acting (and casting for that matter)

While Dalton did seem to lack some of that Bond flare that Connery and Moore had, I think he made a valiant effort, and it still holds up.

What everyone think of Caroline Bliss as Moneypenny. I wonder why she wasn't selected for the Brosnan Bonds as she was around the same age as Samantha Bond who played Moneypenny in the Brosnan era. Bliss seems to be forgotten about. I thought she was good in the film.

John Ninnis Lois Maxwell retired from playing Miss Moneypenny after A View To A Kill as felt she was too old to keep playing the role and Albert Broccoli decided to recast the role for a younger actress in The Living Daylights.

That's not front projection in the fight at the end hanging out the back of the plane. they're hanging over a model that looks like the terrain the plane was actually shot over. it's very cleverly done.

Easily the most underrated Bond film ever. I feel so bad for Timothy Dalton because he was never really allowed to go all the way with making Bond a real character like I can tell he wanted to. Despite the fact that Bond movies were still needing to fit the, "formula" back in those days, it's remarkable how well his performance shines through. What GoldenEye could have been had that been his final film haunts me to this day....

I saw the movie late 80s as teenager and it was amazing and very catchy and I have seen it later and is still awesome pic. Dalton is simply the best bond, nothing to do. Very good looking and very believable one. Connery is very brutal and rough, Lazenby is just ugly, Moore is too comical and easy and mysteriously much loved Brosnan so woody and plain; Craig is good action man but just too unhuman.

+margus kiis I wish I'd been able to see all of the great '80s movies in theaters. I was born in '88, so I saw most of them on VHS later on. Luckily, I had older brothers that liked the right stuff. As a small child, I always considered the Dalton Bond movies to be almost scary.

Heading over to this channel and watching a random find is fast becoming an addiction. Pat on the back for another superb upload Mr. H.It's very refreshing to watch your style of retro/review. PS: Not sure if any other people agree, but "The Living Daylights" main theme played by AHA' - Morten Harket, is the most powerful, and fitting Bond track used to date. There is a mini AHA concert on KZfaq which someone has shared with AHA doing a full acoustic set.And when they start playing this track live, it sends chills down the spine.

I agree with you completely on Dalton being fantastic in the role. This film is my second favourite Bond film overall just behind "For Your Eyes Only". While it would have been interesting to see Pierce in the role at the time, I'm kinda glad we didn't just yet. I think the time was right for both of them when it happened for them. I have such a fond memory of meeting my friend at Fairlane Towncenter in Dearborn, Michigan. We both happened to have had the early afternoon off and pretty much had the entire theater to ourselves. I was so excited for this film, and it didn't disappoint!

I've absolutely loved Living Daylights since I was a kid, upon the film's release. Even as an already established Roger Moore and Sean Connery fan, I felt it more than exceeded my hopes. Plus the score is incredibly cool! The stunts, car chases, and action sequences are among Bond's greatest!

Siskel and Evert both didn’t understand that Timothy Dalton actually read the Ian Fleming books and decided to take the role just as James Bond’s character was written. No other actor who played James Bond took the traditional written role as Dalton did. And he did a fantastic job.
