Something I noticed: they aren't really trying to kill him in the video, all of them push/pull by the chest/shoulders, as if they just wanna squeeze him into the hedges, instead of strangle him as it might have looked like in the beginning. Also they often let him go (in the beginning the weird guy just let go of the dude's shirt and just stood there, the hands in the wall let go eventually too, etc.)

i see the person singing as the embodiment of anger from a now over toxic relationship and the man running in the maze is trying to escape the anger and live a life where he isnt suffering anymore, and those other figures in all black are regret and other emotions that come from being manipulated for so long. It takes place in a maze because trying to overcome the trauma of being in a really bad relationship can make you feel like youre running around and cant escape all the twists and turns of not feeling good enough and hurt. He wakes up in the end instead of escaping because hes still holding onto the anger and not letting go and moving on, letting spite take control, even in the lyrics it confirms that hes holding on because they are something you say out of pure anger that someone hurt you for that long now that the wool is over your eyes. Even in the part where his eyes are closed and theres a red light shining on his face, hes blind to any other emotion but rage. ive had a very toxic relationship and maybe im projecting but i think i understand this song.

Thanks for explaining. I couldn't figure out the meaning of the music video, but personally I prefer singer to escape toxic relationship, not singer to be the toxic one.

So here is my interpretation: As much as the singer in this song seems like the antagonists, they are not. The normal dude seems to be the person who was the toxic one in the relationship. When hearing the song the normal dude goes into a thought that is this music video. The “antagonist” (the main one) is his old friend. The rest of the antagonists I’m guessing represent feelings, I’m not sure. But looking at the video in this angle made me enjoy it more because I didn’t understand what was going on at first, hope this right.

My interpretation: The singer was made to seem like the antigonist on purpose. Whenever someone is in a toxic relationship, (and this comes from somebody who has been in one) we're convinced that *we* are the ones that are wrong. They make us think that we are the reason why they get mad or abusive and force us into changing ourselves. This could mean that the singer is all of the negative thoughts that the victim has had. They are literally trying to find their way out of a maze to break free from whoever has been holding them back. But that's just what I think.

I honestly have to agree with your interpretation. I just got out of a rather toxic and abusive relationship and honestly, I blame myself for everything. I'm more mad at myself than my ex. I blame myself for everything and even apologized but they haven't apologized at all honestly. It's really a lot of self blame and trying to be free from what happened.

I'm late but I'm like 99% sure this is the case. Honestly a lot of the other interpretations I'm reading here... Lead me to believe most of these people really haven't been through this sort of toxic relationship before. I keep seeing people refer to the singer as "the antagonist" and I'm not gonna lie, it rubs me the wrong way.

[LYRICS] Another little abuse, another pointless excuse Another joke that's not to laugh at Another day, feeling like I don't belong I really don't belong So, I end another day, feeling totally betrayed Say hello to anger, did you miss me? I know it so well, like a long time friend Who smiles while poisoning me And I don't know, if they still love me And I don't know, if they still care But all I really know is I am sorry I let you let me grow, so underprepared I'm pulling at the root to tear you off me To see if I'll have something left And even if it means, I'm starting over And everything I made with you means nothing Well, that doesn't matter I'm alone and I'm free 'Cause there's nothing really wrong with me And I know it doesn't matter No matter what they tell me Done living for someone else's time On someone else's dime So I'm drawing my line in the sand 'Cause I know it doesn't matter Another thing to remake, another patient mistake Another self humiliation A better day, happy that I won't belong Does anyone belong? So, I end a lonely day feeling totally okay Wave goodbye to anger, will you miss me? I knew it so well, like a long time friend We'll never be friends again I don't really know if they still love me And I don't know if they still care But all I really know is I'm not sorry 'Cause I am on my own with no one there So make me feel alone when they are with me It sounds insane, but au contraire I'm cutting off the parts, that kill the body Because they never played me fair and square And I feel fucking awesome I'm alone, and I'm free 'Cause there's nothing really wrong with me And I know it doesn't matter No matter what they tell me Done living for someone else's time On someone else's dime So, I'm drawing my line in the sand 'Cause I know it doesn't matter I don't really think about your love now And I don't think that I still care I know without a doubt, if you could see me I would ruin your week, your month, your year 'Cause you don't have a victim you can poison So now the poison's all you have I'm living a new life and don't regret it And you just have the memory Bet you'll never forget it Because now I'm alone and I'm free 'Cause there's nothing really wrong with me And I know it doesn't matter No matter what they tell me Done living for someone else's time On someone else's dime So I'm drawing my line in the sand 'Cause I know it doesn't matter Yeah, I know it doesn't matter (Are they growing tired of this?) I've seen people confused with the idea that the singer being the antagonist, but I think it completely fits. It's someone who has convinced themself that they're the one breaking free, but they've really been the one in the wrong from the beginning. Eventually, they isolate themselves completely and stop listening to advice or help. They're living on their own but at the cost of their personal relationships. It's a perfect song for losing touch with reality, losing everyone who grounded them.

Same thoughts. Honestly, with all the memes and posts eveywhere about cutting yourself off from toxic people there is statistically bound to be one dense, entitled toxic person who thinks that the reasonable people they hold relationships with who are starting to fight back are "toxic." I readily imagine a Karen being this way.

There was a part that always sounded a bit like that to me. "And I don't think about your love now. And I don't think that I still care. I know without a doubt, if you could see me, I would ruin your week, your month, your year." He talks about being over it & above it but that part always sounded a bit deliberately like the opposite to me.

A part of it still feels it's about exiting a toxic relationship (whether friendship, romantic, or even a family). Leaving a bad relationship or even figuring out how to avoid the confrontation is like going through a maze of what to do or say. It even feels like you can't leave or the circumstances are inevitable to happen (fights and stuff). At the same time when you see the toxic people for what they are- toxic- you look back at yourself (like how he does when he looks at his sleeping self who was probably listening to music to relax) and wonder why you let everything slide so much. Maybe it's a past reflection of a relevation. Either that or he's fighting some dark conscience of himself that questions giving their past relationships a taste of their own money. That drive to really show that person how harmful they were for the person, so the struggle is to continue being the bigger person and not add fire to flame? Idk maybe I'm grasping at straws LMAO.
@MouseGoat
@MouseGoat 3 жыл бұрын
Art is about grasping straws and see if anything usfull come out. it sounds right, I "lost" a really toxic friendship early this year, and i feelt free at last. but coming to the conclusion that it was her and not me that was in the wrong was trully the maze. for her toxic was that of always making me belive i was at fault for letting her down, and she was the one being way to nice to me for me to do such a thing to her... but man what a joke it is when you finally see that she's just using this tactic because she's afraid of losing her control. and finally i could put myself toghter and make sens of right and wrong again. For when you sure you right, but have to convince yourself you wrong, the world become upside down, and leaving you more and more depressed as nothing seems to make any sense.

Rewatching this just makes me realize how many people interpret this as escaping a toxic relationship. I've only seen it as an internal struggle because the main part is that it's all in his head. As someone with horrible depression, it really does feel like this from time to time. You just get in the mindset of "It doesn't fucking matter leave me the fuck alone" which is only a cycle of self-destruction. "Another little abuse, another pointless excuse" just feels like guilt from pointlessly lying and abusing people, which I can confirm happens sometimes. You really do feel like you're in a huge maze trying to decipher your own feelings. The most important thing, though, is that nothing is resolved in the end. Nothing has changed from feeling guilt, and nothing will ever change. It truly is a battle against yourself everyday. Constantly worrying and stressing while hopelessly lost in the huge maze of your own brain. Just felt I needed to say my interpretation since I haven't seen another one like it.

this song really has a bpd split feeling, like,, the living tombstone is one of the band i listen to when i start to have not really cool angry paranoid panic attack and well,, the song is really good in it's progression and describes it really well, this song is so important to me as i feel less alone and a lil less bad and the maze for me represent you trying to escape the intrusive thoughts during it all, trying to escape this paranoic voice that's ruining your life and lives of your loved ones, the fact that the antagonist is the one that sings is really good in this case too as it's not me that think those things but my fear of abandonment and need of self preservation towards this fear that express themselves the fact that they're that agressive really is accurate to how violent the voices and thoughts are violents, including what your brains screams you to do and you're just tryna escape it all before you'll do something incredibly stupid the fact that the protagonist escape it all by "waking up" is accurate too as i'll just try to focus myself on everything else to run away from those thoughts and feelings that terrifies me, i'll just distract myself by anyways possible to make sure i can't hear the voices too much on top of all the added noises i choose to hear,, i don't know if it makes sense but it's my interpretation

Was here during premiere... the hell was happening? I guess he imagined some weird train conductor guy and some other humanoid figures in all black chasing him down in a maze when he listened to this song? This is an odd one. also for anyone wondering, Long Time Friends has already been out for a bit, but this is its video. Still a banger nonetheless.

I will be honest here. The maze is genuinely a good way to convey being lost in the music. Though during the whole thing playing out, possibly could have added instead. Show subtle things what he was dealing with thats chasing him(like family stress, or abusive texts from a bad relationship), as he is the one doing the lyrics. Showing self doubt and self hate as described from the lyrics (apologizing for being "unprepared"). Felling "alone", because he wouldn't fit in. Poison, being in the abusive relationship from family or something of the sort. 2:53 would have the protagonist, at a good distance. As he looks back and keeps moving, showing a grin form (as he feels that he is finally no longer dealing with these problems) as he is getting close the the center of the maze. Showing triumph as he runs toward his goal. From 3:17 to the end, plays as is, face from grin to hesitation to return to reality. I did not mean to sound rude in anyway. Its just the song sounds like its mentioning stress from somewhere.

My interpretation of what this video represents is that the singer is actually the protagonist and the man running is the antagonist. The singer and the other figures are symbols of the fear of confrontation, jealousy of the other partner moving on, guilt of what the runner did, etc. The maze is the mental labyrinth that trauma creates, and while the runner may have been abusive, he still experienced the trauma of an unhealthy relationship, which is almost always traumatic in some way to everyone involved. He keeps encountering the fear, jealousy, and guilt whenever he thinks about the relationship or attempts to confront what happened. I also feel that him running away and still encountering the singer could symbolize how in some relationships, you not only have to confront your feelings and the experience, but sometimes your ex themself, which often brings the feelings and memories back to the surface for you to relive again (especially the line "I know if you could see me, I would ruin your week, your month, your year). I may be projecting my own experience into this, but I personally believe that relating to art in your own way with your own experiences is one of the best things about it.

The maze is a good metaphor for splitting and trying to get out of the habit of listening to every voice in your head telling you things like "I'm better off without my friends". Convincing yourself that they're poison clinging to your body like a tapeworm, and feeling euphoric when you cut them off. I'm enjoying the theory that this could be one of the backstories for one of the tombstonas, and why they joined the group. Would explain the sign in the maze.

I listened to this song on amazon music, so I haven’t seen the music video until now. When you listen to the song without visuals and just look at the lyrics, it’s really easy to interpret that the singer is the one cutting off a toxic person from their life. Seeing all these comments talking about their theories that the singer isn’t the bad guy really confused me because I thought it was obvious

Its been two years since this song released, but i relate to it now more than ever. Looking back on things throughout highschool and such after graduating made me realize that none of my friends really cared what happened to me. I thought back to most the times we hung out and im realizing that i was just the filler person to a lot of my friends because it was awkward to have 3 people. I never got invited out to things, never was told about parties happening or invited out to trips to the beach with all my other friends. And i think im finally coming to terms with everything i thought i knew about friendships, was basically a lie. And it hurts to think that people i confided in and trusted for most of my life just didnt care. I mean, if they did they would have at least checked up on me after highschool ended, or invited me to stuff that summer. Or ask when i was going to be in town and try to hang out when i was right? Its been a year since i graduated and no one contacted me. No one has tried to hang out with me, or even ask me how ive been. Or even returned any of my texts and calls. And it just, feels so alone now but kinda freeing that i dont have to bother with it anymore

Maybe I´m overthinking this, but this could be about anger issues?, the maze represents his mind and the struggle, and how anger is his long time friend, and that anger has screw with him so much, in his relationships and that´s why he says "I don´t really know if they still love me", because he pushed people away, also things like when it says "I´ll never leave alone" because the problem is him, also when he mentions that he´s alone and he´s free because now people won´t make him angrier?, or something like that, that they won´t be friends again and I´m not really sorry, they could either the anger messing up with him and he getting angrier at himself ooor the friendships that his anger ruined, and last when he says that is ok its because he is fine with that?. I think I´m overthinking, and all because he went to sleep and I started to theorizing; Well I loved the song and the fact the video is shot in a maze i insteresting, oou I´ll have it stuck in my head......

That's a good interpretation, I didn't think of that, instead I thought about how the maze guy could be the toxic friend and the conductor is his own vision of his ex friend who was the victim. The dark people following the conductor is the embodiment of the poison that will continue to follow maze guy for the rest of his life if he doesnt stop lying to himself. The past that will continue to haunt him with no idea why until he stops seeing through his own bullshit. It's essentially about a self centered toxic friend who blames others on his problems. And is directed to toxic friends and ironically satiring them. That is how I've interpreted it, but ofc could be wrong as well. Probably am, but it can be seen multiple ways.

So, to me? This is a guy dreaming about all the reasons he had to escape a toxic relationship. The angry conductor is well, anger, and its a conductor cause the song is very much seeming to be about the response to the relationship giving in and being controlled by anger. Escaping that anger is a maze in and of itself and he still has to work himself out of the maze its left him in due to everything that happened. However, using the premise of the zero one and living tomb stone thing it could be a commentary on the guy who had zero one (go watch introducing zero one) in his head (see I'm alone and I'm free and there's nothing wrong with me). Honestly it could very well be someone who tried or did free himself from one of the tombstones with how they have that one work in the whole lore of zero_one and what not. (Seriously, go watch introducing Zero_One, it really messes with this song.)

My favourite two seconds in music are the lines 'I really don't belong' and 'Does anyone belong?' The way the singer does a great job at delivering them and the pause before the word 'belong' in both lines really seals the deal for me.

The protagonist needs to place himself in antagonistic position to escape his abuser, is what feels. Hes been shown "love" and "friendship" in a twisted fashion, so now he needs to go actively against it and be alone to recover. My friends who were abused growing up always view themselves as the ones at fault when they clearly are only making normal choices and respecting their own needs, and the anger and sadness have also taken a physical tol on their bodies ("parts that kill the body" is how I see it in the lyrics) They didn't develop certain areas, a lot even made dependent of their abusers, and feel in a maze, yet they are now further away from the reach of those that abused them, so as hard as many things get, they have begun to feel better as they slowly work towards total recovery. Biased, i know, but I feel like this reflects the positively chaotic and complicated, yet rewarding path of escaping abuse, recovering from it and the emotional and mental turmoil (trauma, anger and feelings of inadequacy, along with complete unpreparedness to tackle life outside those abuses and the coping mechanisms built from it) that needs to be digested and let go of.

I guess I feel that beyond just a toxic relationship, its just talking about past bad experiences. Events that affected you, its about leaving behind the anger and making it so those events don’t plague you anymore.
