The main con of these boots, in my experience, is that the grip totally fails on really compacted snow/ice. They're amazing on paved surfaces or looser snow, like they're walking around in in this video. Perfect boot for that kind of application. But, if you're looking for something to get you through winters in an urban environment that gets a lot of compacted snow, you might want something with a grippier sole.

I wish I could post photos. I recently bought a 16" pair of the Maine Hunting Shoe (softer compound), and had speed hooks installed for faster lacing. I ordered one size up to accomodate their shearling insoles, and my Dachstein boiled wool socks. They're my snowshoeing boots. With a heavy packing of wax into the stitching, I can wade in trails that have become streambeds, and not a drop of water gets on my pants, with that 16" height. With the insoles and my socks, good down to around 10°. Very light and nimble; there's a reason dudes like this model for elk hunting. I love the combination of groundfeel through the soft sole, and a robust steel shank that allows for traversing pointy rocks and logging slash. I worked in the Brunswick factory making bottoms for awhile, so I have extra appreciation for them.

Go with the Maine hunting shoes instead. More flexible soles for the woods. Higher shafts and more similar to the originals. For truly waterproof boots though I’d go with lacrosse for wading creeks.

They aren’t ugly to me. Polo has their own version of Duck boots and they are so stylish, they have a buckle and a side pocket on both boots. I own a black pair and a brown pair. They are called the Ralph Lauren Hamlin II

Recently got my first pair of bean boots on sale for 60 big ones, I love them! Sure they aren’t anything outstanding in terms of quality, but they are certainly sturdy and built to last 👍

Thinking about ordering my first pair. As much as I want to avoid the 8" tan because everyone wears them, they really do look the best. The brown 10" looks cool, too, I guess.

My recommendation: rub the uppers down with mink oil every year, especially in the stitching. This will help the boots reject water. Have had my boots for 5 years now!

While they may be used as a casual boot, that is neither their intended use or all that they can be used for. I was the field operations manager at a large produce farm in upstate NY for 5 years, and I wore bean boots every spring, fall ,and wet days during the summer working 12-14 hour days in hard labor. After a while the stitching wears out around the rubber, but being able to have them resoled for $40 is a huge plus. I will say that they aren’t suitable for cold winter days because the rubber freezes your feet, and in the summer you will bake your feet in direct sunlight.

I don't know about this model and their half-size issue, but I've mostly bought Bean shoes because they're one of the few brands that come in smaller sizes. I got the Lacrosse waterproof ones which look like these but probably cost less at the time, but haven't had a chance to really try them out because even with our extra cold, wet winter this year, I still had no occasion to stand around in icy puddles. Yes, overall I also have little use for such an outsole but they seemed like a good bargain for something I might want to wear sometime eventually for some reason.

The older boots in my experience, were much better. I’ve had my 14” for about 35 years. I was going to get some 8” but the quality is not the same and the cost is up. All said, almost all go LL Bean products have diminished in quality and have gone “off-shore”. These days, I look elsewhere.

@@rogerr.8507 Depends how you use them. Walking on concrete sidewalks 3 seasons of the year? You could easily need a rebottoming in a couple years. I wear mine in the Maine woods, or occasionally on winter sidewalks paved in brick, mostly when covered in ice and snow. I'm n e v e r going to need a rebottoming. I simply don't walk on enough abrasive material.

While most products have gone off shore the boots are still made in Maine and with cost of wages going up here their prices go up too but I get you’re point no arguments here! Im sure the older products have a much different build quality

@@rogerr.8507 HA HA HA, they really might just not be for you. As someone who used to make them, and who adores mine, a bit of context: They were developed as a stalking boot. The originals were made with a softer compound. They didn't even have shanks; they used to sell leather inserts with shanks if you wanted them. They felt like rubber moccasins, basically. The Maine Hunting Shoe still has that softer compound, but does have a shank. The Bean Boot was developed with a firmer compound and a stiffer leather requiring less maintainance, for city folks. It holds out a little longer against abrasion, but it's not my favorite compromise, frankly. The Maine Hunting shoe is a superb purpose-built shoe. The Bean Boot is a perhaps more versatile jack of all trades, but well suited to none. If you tend to abrade shoe soles quickly, especially the heels, I might even disrecommend them to you. And I say this as someone who recently bought a custom 16" pair for my own purposes, to which they are perfectly suited.

Why do they keep saying only the rubber part is waterproof they have been marketed to duck hunters because of them being waterproof for decades and the specially treat the inside where the leather meets the rubber
@musicmechanic_
@musicmechanic_ 8 ай бұрын
They are waterproof in the sense that you could stomp through ankle deep water and snow without having to worry about them, but they aren't designed for someone to park the entire boot underwater and just keep standing in it.
