Everyone else "oh no who gave Lawrie power tools, what could possibly go wrong"
@humbucker0076
@humbucker0076 10 ай бұрын
To be honest, I indeed find Lawries use of power tools kind of frightening with the lack of basic safety - not having his long hair tied back under a cab or something or the loose and open high Vis jacked, the wide gloves are also kind of questionable. If any of that gets stuck in that angle grinder hell breakes loose.
@bentullett6068
@bentullett6068 10 ай бұрын
@humbucker0076 at the heritage railway I volunteer at we have to take a exam on angle grinder safety. Last time I did it we had to watch a video from America on KZfaq where it covered all the does and don'ts of using a angle grinder. I was surprised how dangerous people in America were with them as they have incidents where they bypass the safety switch to make sure the tool is on as soon as they plug it in, but forget that if it is on a bench at a angle it races of as soon as it is turned on.

From the intro to the series, this is going to be a fun series to watch. Also tip for the drive chains, put in a bucket of oil (doesn't have to be fresh oil either) and leave to soak for many days.

Surprised you chose to wire wheel the rust off, at the railway I work at we opt to either needlegun or waterjet all the rust, crap and paint off- far faster, and in the case of waterjetting, far cleaner!
@edwardbull3045
@edwardbull3045 10 ай бұрын
waterjetting is expensive Needlegunning and wirebrushing are the more cost effective methods at least. but each has its upsides
@StaxRail
@StaxRail 10 ай бұрын
@edwardbull3045 I know it is, but the results speak for themselves- its how we did 7827, compared to our usual of needlegunning, which we only did to any cast components or thick platework. Wirebrushing we only resort to for thin material, its way too time consuming for most locos in service- let alone one sat in a scrapyard for decades!
@edwardbull3045

not to mention the gasket on that gear selector housing, which looked highly likely to be an ASBESTOS gasket!! a loco of that age is likely to contain asbestos gaskets. when you remove somethng that is gasketed, keep a sprayer of wd40 handy to spray the freshly exposed gasket to mitigate the release of possible asbestos fibre.

Thanks Lawrie, Charles, Tom, gracious hosts and team. I'm sure 26 minutes of video barely does justice to your day of hard work there but it s brilliant to see work starting on that Ruston. I almost said "our Ruston" but I guess technically it is your Ruston but we, the viewers, are supporting its rescue, conservation and restoration. As you already have a working example, that should make it a lot easier to figure out how to restore this one.

I've seen gearboxes that were half filled with water come back from scrap with not a ton of work needed. It's a somewhat common occurrence in the armored vehicle world. The water that came out with the old gearbox oil didn't look opaque with rust, so the internals might still be salvageable. Expect to have a can of worms when you split it apart though.

I have a bad feeling about that engine - I hope I am wrong but that flywheel looked like it was moving up and down rather than the engine moving. Could mean bad bearings and pistons rusted to the cylinders. If you can get the injectors out and fill the cylinders with diesel it might free up the pistons. Dare you to paint it in Network Southeast Livery!

Good way to clean out any sort of surface scale and rust would be to fill it with white vinegar and let sit. The vinegar will work to remove any sort of scaling on the metal materials. Then flush it out with diesel and let it soak in diesel again,

White vinegar works good as a light acid if you ever have to clean certain things like inside gas tanks and lose pieces that need soaking for a few days. Just make sure to spray it down in oil so it doesn't flash rust afterwards.
