Living in Austin, TX with a bus system and barely function rail line…when I’m in London and get to use the Tube, I’m always impressed and envious.
@alvexok5523
@alvexok5523 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It's the same with here in Kansas City. The only train here is the Amtrak which like in Austin is barely functional here too. London doesn't just have the Underground, it's got many overground trains running to all of the different suburbs of London and to other parts of the UK. And much of Europe has trains even faster, some of them almost 200 mph. Japan has trains even faster than that. And we've got trains which go no faster than the trains we had 100+ years ago. These 50 mph trains may've been impressive at the turn of the 20th century when the only other forms of land transportation that ever existed were horse and wagon, horse and carriage, or horseback, but today next to all of the other fast impressive forms of transportation, why Amtrak is still even here is a wonder

I loved the Tube when I lived in London. Didn't need a car and could get everywhere I wanted to go quickly and efficiently. So much better than so many other countries. The UK can be proud of their transportation system. It's still the envy of many parts of the world, even with its imperfections.

Fun fact, the original southern terminus of the Jubilee Line, Charing Cross, is still an operational complex today, even though it's officially closed to passengers. In fact, the Eagle Eyed amongst you have probably seen it on film. James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, in Skyfall slid down one of the escalators there. It's still used as a film set with a modern looking station

I remember one doco about the London Underground. It had two people leaving a pub and then traveling to a particular station supposedly on the outskirts of the city. The crew followed the first guy who turned left and walked 100m to the closest tube station. They went into the center of town, changed trains twice and then finally arrived at their destination. The other guy turned right out of the pub, walked 50m down the street before crossing over the road. He too was now at the destination. This was done to demonstrate the absurdity of the tube system, that was a direct result of private companies all trying to out do each other and steal patronage.

Simon, great summation and generally good coverage of the subject, but a couple of corrections: 1. the Metropolitan & St John's Wood Railway never went to Hampstead Village. That map at 10:05 shows the plan, but they ran out of money and only got as far as Swiss Cottage - when the line extended later, it took a different route. 2. The Central London Railway map at 11.37 shows the 1901 proposals for adding turn around loops at each end, which was rejected by parliament. You should also credit the Wikipedia creators of the maps, by the way.

I live in San Antonio, TX where we don't have any options for subway or light rail. All we have is a bus line, but as you can imagine with the city of 2 million people, busses are at the mercy of traffic congestion. So when the wife and I visited London, I was blown away at how vast the system is. I always said, if the tube, bus, or overground doen't go where you want it then you don't need to go there. Expensive? perhaps, but I don't need to rent a car to get around.

I don't have much experience with American metro systems, I do however find London's design quite intuitive and tourist friendly - if my non-English-speaking family can easily get from point A to point B with one or two line changes, then it must be a decently thought out system. except for Bank. Bank is what purgatory must feel like. and yes, a 6min wait is a very valid reason for a massive sigh and an eye roll 😄

Well with the London Underground done, you can totally do Denver International Airport. It's the second largest airport in the world by land (though King Fahd in Saudi Arabia only has two runways to DIA's six). DIA is one of the busiest airports in the country, and indeed the entire world. In addition to it's beautiful architecture and gorgeous view of the mountains, the airport has it's fair share of controversy, conspiracy, and budget overruns. IE: Perfect for a megaprojects video. Honestly, international airports in general should be covered by you, since they're so spectacularly large! Or... Mega I guess.

speaking of wild rides, our old friend Charles Tyson Yerkes (the American crook who pretty much made the whole thing feasible) and his shady shenanigans would make for an indeed _wild ride_ of a biographics video.

As a German I had a school excursion to London 30 years ago when I was still young and confused. The only thing I can remember about London is the Tube, because it reliably brought you to the destination you wanted to go. Otherwise I would have been lost.

Meanwhile, up here in't north east, we have (well, I say "we", doesn't come near to where I live!!) the Tyne & Wear Metro, which is similar, but smaller, and in some areas uses Beeching'd & Thatcher'd (I.E. forcibly closed down) railway lines... :P

What an audacious project. Not unremarkably, cut and cover is still a fairly common way of constructing sub-grade right of ways of all kinds to this day. Great video on an interesting subject.

Need to be clear about the Jubilee line, and when it opened and which were the original terminus stations, namely Charing Cross; the line was extended from Green Park to Stratford from the late 90s
