I love that such a simple story can carry such a complex feeling when you set it to music. It’s a shame that young man wasn’t buried at his home, but it’s almost like the prairie is his home now. It’s a world that’s harsh and difficult to make a life in, but one that’s full of love and companionship nonetheless.

I found another verse that reminds me of your recent loss. I'm thinking of incorporating it into my rendition of the song, which is based on yours: "'I've often wished to be laid, when I died/In the little church[sic] on the green hillside;/By my father's grave there let mine be--/O bury me not on the lone prairie." I first saw it in the Lomaxes' record. I'll have to tweak it to fit, but thought you might be interested.

I appreciate your beautiful renditions guiding me to the stories of so many of our ancestors, who were displaced from any sense of home, and who still haunt the lands of turtle island with all the horror they experienced, as well as the horror they caused. I take my studies of these histories very seriously because the FULL story needs to be remembered if we want to compost the trash that poverty, displacement, imperialism and colonialism leaves in its wake.

Something that this makes me wonder about is how many of these songs were written to be sung by foreign voices. Early American would have been such a melting pot of voices and accents and cultures that many of these songs probably sound a little different with modern American accents.
