when we look at guns and barrel lengths they very from cartridge to cartridge and at some point you get diminishing returns... finding perfect burn length is a process, revolvers suffer the gap, which greatly reduces barrel burn length. but it still is in effect just that you loose more energy to gap size so a tight gap is essential for best performance. ideal is closed bolt systems that get the most out of barrel length to cartridge power. still finding what's best for what your doing is really the crux of why you want the right size for the job. as always short for short and long for long but how long is too long is always personal preference. still always a great video and looking forward to more.

@Johnny Deadmeat In testing 9mm and 45 ACP from both autos and revolvers, I've been surprised many times when revolvers actually have slightly higher velocity (30 fps or so) than the auto of similar ballistic barrel length (length measured muzzle to firing pin). In my tests if the revolver has a barrel cylinder gap less than 0.004", the revolver will have higher velocity than the auto. Have to remember that autos also lose velocity due to slide cycling energy loss! Both revolvers and autos will show slightly less velocity than a single shot barrel of the same ballistic length.

Your last comment on length made me wonder just how long a barrel would have to be before it actually started to slow the bullet down rather than help it.

It's important to be aware that you might get different results from this kind of test with different cartridges (say, 9mm vs. .357 Magnum) or propellant (fast burning pistol powders like Bullseye vs. black powder vs. slower burning powders like H-110). Generally, the faster the powder, the less gain you'll see from a longer barrel (and the shorter the barrel will see highest velocity, with a drop-off as you increase further). That typically also means that semi-auto pistol cartridges will gain less from barrel length (and stop gaining at a shorter length) than revolver cartridges loaded for velocity (at least in my experience, maximum velocity in mid-length and longer barrels comes from the slowest powder that will let you use a maximum load in your cartridge). If you had more barrel length choices you could actually demonstrate this "diminishing returns" with your Heritage revolvers -- with .22 LR standard velocity ammo you'd gain less past around six inches than with high velocity or hyper velocity, and with standard or high velocity, you'll stop gaining at around sixteen inches (maybe less in a revolver, due to the cylinder gap), while hypervelocity will likely continue gaining up to around twenty.

I still say that if you use the 22LR cylinder in the 16in barrel, it will be experiencing drag and would not be worth it. Try it with a 12in heritage rough rider using 22LR, and then I think you might see your point of maximum efficiency.

Good video. I was wondering: Could you do a demonstration illustrating the power and effect of the most fundamental handgun rounds of the old west showing chronograph velocity and effect on, say, a Paul Harrel meat target? 1851 Navy .36 conical 1860 Army .44 conical .38 LC conversion bp .44 Colt or Special bp .45 Colt 1873 Too many people compare the .Navy .36 with an 80 gr ball .380 acp FMJ and the Army .44 to .45 Colt and are left with the impression that one end of the belt pistol is incredibly weak and the other end in .44 Army 140 gr ball or 200 gr conical, especially when using modern .45 Colt conversions, is a black powder magnum that can all take down grizzlies. This ignores the effect of 125-150 gr conical and hb bullets with 21 gr of bp inthe Navy that were more commonly used and a 200 gr conical with 30 gr of bp.
