Hello and welcome to a special trip report!
Today we will be travelling with Spanish national operator Renfe aboard one of the Alvia S-130 dual voltage, dual gauge trainsets. Powered by 2x Bombardier electric power cars & featuring 11x Talgo Serie VII coaches these are the fastest sets capable of running on Iberian gauge lines.
We won't be making the full 10+ hour trip from Barcelona to Sevilla today, instead just taking the 6+ hour hop between Valencia and Córdoba; I hope you enjoy the ride!
Date of Filming: 29/9/20
Camera: GoPro Hero 7 Black
Operator: Renfe
Departure: Valencia, Spain
Arrival: Córdoba, Spain
Cost: €35.90 (Preferente, First Class)

This service started with loco hauled Talgo Serie VI coaches. There was major changing rotations of Talgo stock and this service changed to the Serie VII Superreclinables (coaches with larger reclinable seats that were previously in Trenhotel service). Those Serie VII had go to heavy refurbishment to assembly new automotive high speed units. Then the service was assured with S-130 units. The avaliability of this units is limited and were required in other routes so as the day I'm writting this the S-121 are assuring the Torre del Oro service. This service normaly runs entirely in iberian gauge; but a major enginering works at Barcelona Sants iberian gauge tracks it's running in standard gauge between Barcelona and Tarragona, then iberian to Sevilla.

Valencia has 2 central stations: Valencia-Nord, for Iberian gauge services and Valencia-Joaquín Sorolla, for the AVE services. The plan the Valencian Community regional government (Generalitat Valenciana) did on the late 2000s (A great time for spending more money than you have) was to connect this 2 current stations into a great central one, by building a new underground central station, that would be connected to the Metrovalencia subway current line 7 (Former line 5 branch from Colón to Torrent-Avinguda) at Bailén station,but it was so expensive, even for the National Government, so that's why there are 2 central stations above the ground in Valencia

which do you prefer? Valencia Nord or Valencia Joaquin Sorolla?
@pedrorubiotejero_aka_prt
@pedrorubiotejero_aka_prt 3 жыл бұрын
@@nando_3280 Valencia Nord, because it's more beautiful than Valencia-Joaquín Sorolla, a typical modern station built with concrete and steel. In fact, the 2 stations would be converted into an one central station with a tunnel passing under Valencia in order to convert the station from a terminal station to a passing-through station, but the 2008 crisis arrived and the conservative regional government, spending millions of euros on spectacular work projects and buildings, like "La Fe" Hospital in Southern Valencia, that's one of the biggest hospitals in the world, or being the centre of attention of Formula One, by building a circuit next to the sea in Valencia's port, and many other work projects and buildings, rejected to make a central station.

Fantastic scenery in the gorge. An under-rated route that I love is the Madrid to Almeria talgo. You get such diverse scenery - the southern stretch is spectacular arid mountains and deep wadis with spectacular viaducts, while north of Valdepenas you cross the meseta which is totally the opposite, flat, rich farmland all the way to the horizon. Almeria itself is a lovely pocket sized little city - the Alcazaba is lovely and there's some odd, fascinating little museums in town. Nothing about it wows you, but it's just nice, laid back and utterly unpretentious. One day Almeria will getting an AVE link... and one day I'll be an astronaut, too!

The Alvia service is running everyday. However, it's a Vigo/A Coruña Barcelona long distance service via Ourense, Monforte de Lemos, Ponferrada, León, Palencia, Burgos, Vitoria, Pamplona, Zaragoza and Tarragona, among other smaller towns. The service towards Barcelona departs from Vigo on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and it departs from A Coruña the rest of the days of the week. The service towards Vigo/A Coruña arrives to Vigo on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and it arrives to A Coruña the rest of the days of the week. If you plan to take the Alvia a day not departing from the desired city, you have to take a commuter train (Avant or Medium Distance) towards Ourense, that allows you to make the link to Alvia service (the same happens in the opposite way). In addition to that, this is the service that allows you to make trips like the one between Vigo/A Coruña and Bilbao/Hendaye (ex-Intercity Arco service), via link in Miranda de Ebro/Vitoria, once Renfe decided to remove the loco-hauled Intercity, supposedly because of the presence of asbest in coaches (then we learnt that it was a hidden strategy by Renfe to sell all its loco-hauled coaches to Portugal)

@@NonstopEurotrip Alvia service is running everyday. However, all night services disappeared when COVID-19 restrictions arose, supposedly "because it was hard to implement the required sanitary measures". Anyway, it wasn't anything new that running costs were higher than incomes from night train tickets for all remaining services (they never think about social utility), and COVID-19 became the perfect excuse to remove them
@hateornges
@hateornges 3 жыл бұрын
Then again the Vigo-Barcelona service takes 13 hr 53 min as shown on Google maps, and that's just for eastbound. So the torre del oro isn't really the longest day train in Spain. I don't know about the distance from Barcelona-Sevilla, so maybe the Torre del Oro is longer just based on distance.
