Join rail explorers Geoff Marshall and Vicki Pipe, also known as All The Stations, as they discover the history of the Looe Valley Line in our four-part mini series.
In Part 1, Vicki takes us back to the start with a visit to Bodmin Moor to see the remnants of the Looe Valley Line's earliest predecessor, the Liskeard and Caradon Railway, which opened in 1844.
Next she heads to the Moorswater Viaduct and explains how the main line arrived in Liskeard in 1859, bringing with it the building of Liskeard station and a shake-up for time-keeping across the town.

The series is part of the Looe Valley Line heritage project by the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership.

GET THE APP
Download the free 'Looe Valley Line Heritage' app for iOS and Android, the perfect heritage companion to a trip on the line. As you travel beneath the towering viaduct, call at picturesque stations and meander alongside the estuary, the app uses GPS to tell you about what you’re seeing.
VISIT
Nothing beats visiting the line yourself. Plan your trip at www.greatscenicrailways.com.
The heritage project is funded by the GWR Customer and Communities Improvement Fund and the Designated Community Rail Development Fund, a joint initiative of the Department for Transport and ACoRP, the Association of Community Rail Partnerships.

I loved this line as a little kid because the class 423 still ran there last time I went on there! The class 423 was last in service on main lines in 2006

Atmospheric mist on Bodmin Moor is nice - until you get that trickle that runs down the back of your neck & under your clothes. I never realised that the line went up from Liskeard, so it is always nice learning something new about somewhere you've been several times (all be it over 20 years ago now!).

What a lovely little series albeit probably better as one vid in all honesty. I remember Looe from my childhood and the line running towards the harbour and a what seemed to me a fairly extensive goods yard. I remember the level crossing in the town. A shame so many lines have been shortened over the years.....

Great video, I'll be sure to watch the rest! Bit confused about the shot at 2:11 though, seems like a strange graphical thing - anyone got any ideas?

Thanks Dan - the 2:11 shot is just the Minions Heritage Centre sign mounted on a slab of stone in front of the engine house. This pic shows the scene a bit more clearly: pastplace.exeter.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/P3064107.jpg In the film it does have a slightly mysterious judder to it though - all part of the Bodmin Moor atmosphere!

Green Screen... Geoff & Vicki were never there - it was all filmed in front of a green screen in a studio on the Isle of Wight.
