It seems crazy now, but I'm old enough to remember that when the Jackson movies came out there were tons of complaints from certain segments of the Internet that they didn't follow the books closely enough. Very few people remember those complaints because the Jackson's version was done so very well. Likewise if this show is done well, then no one will remember the naysayers. Once the show comes out, people can decide for themselves if the show is good - anyone who's already made up their mind that the show is bad isn't going to change their mind once the show comes out. Personally I'm cautiously optimistic based on what I've seen so far.

But many more Tolkien fans in the organized book fandom were generally optimistic after that first teaser trailer showed the Fellowship - every single member including Bill the Pony instantly recognizable - coming over the hill crest. It might actually be good, we thought. But here? There was not a single image in this trailer of things that a Tolkien fan might expect to see in a story of the Second Age. No forging nor giving of Rings; no open Doors of Durin; no Sauron in chains before the ageing Ar-Pharazon; no nine ships escaping the wreck of Númenor. Instead, a lot of travelogue footage that leave the fans of a certain disposition to speculate uselessly. "It's ice! It _might_ be the Helcaraxë!" But really, it could be from any post-Tolkien fantasy novel of the last forty years. Then we read the very patronizing Vanity Fair quote about how the millennia of the Second Age have been telescoped to only a relatively few years (badly undermining the slow decline of Númenor and the theme of the blasphemous desire for bodily immortality that fuels its fall, and the corruption of the bearers of the Nine): "Look, there might be some fans who want us to do a documentary of Middle-earth, but we’re going to tell one story that unites all these things." This is not an encouraging attitude towards the fans nor the integrity of the work. They may say they love Tolkien's work; but I have seen little evidence of it so far. From the opening image of perhaps Númenor, we can see that they love Peter Jackson's work, but not Tolkien. And with virtually nothing known about the actual story nor the original characters, we cannot even tell if it will be good television even if it is not good representation of Tolkien.

Well I really enjoyed the trailer. I’m relieved that the characters/costumes don’t look as polished and clean as they did in the vanity fair pics. Love that shot of the big Gandalf looking hand at the end but hope it turns out to be Sauron the deceiver. I just hope GW, Weta Workshop, Lego and United Cutlery get/are involved. I’m loving the hype and the build up. Looking forward to more 👍🏻

I was about 14 when I read the Hobbit. Was hooked for life. My minds adaptation would have been different then some others; that’s natural. Back then, I couldn’t imagine 6 movies like PJ. I loved them even though they were slightly changed from the books. The nay sayers were there then and will be here again. We are getting a multi season of middle earth. Had I said that 30 years ago, you would think I’ve had too much old Toby. I just ask that we all give this BILLION dollar production a chance and if someone doesn’t like it, don’t watch. Personally, I plan on watching many many times. 😊 cheers

Totally agree with you on the way people have negatively critiqued the show using hatred and completely vile comments. It is distracting and pulling away from having an interesting conversation. I am looking forward to seeing this show as I am hoping my opinion is swayed but so far I am not liking the look of it. For me, it is the aesthetics. I am reminded of the Disney Narnia movies rather than Middle Earth. It doesn't feel grounded in the way PJ presented the world back in the LOTR trilogy. I think I would be ok with that only Amazon did say they were wanting to keep it within universe with the PJ movies and hiring John Howe and Howard Shore certainly creates expectations that it would be similar. So I'm still holding out on the next trailer and I hope it convinces me. On a positive note though, that creature looks awesome and I hope GW are producing minis from this as I'd love to see that on the table.

I get what your saying. But I remember a lot of fuss about the movies having a different “feel” to the books, and people were calling pj the anti christ lol, soon enough, pjs middle earth is the bench mark. Who knows how well feel after it’s released, but I am hopeful, maybe a fools hope ;)

This! I also got a Naria feel from the teaser and less of a LOTR feel. However, I will wait and see the next trailers and am excited for the series. I don't mind if the series is less timeless as the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Great video Ste, I've watched the trailer a few times, but haven't tried to work out what it all was, and have been avoiding the discussion on its for the reasons you mentioned. I've also avoided any other commentaries on it as well, I don't want my opinion spoilt by the kind drivel this might attract. But I love that you've done here, kept it nice and simple, I look forward to following your videos on this, knowing I can trust your approach.

Thanks for the great breakdown. I’m not well read with the Tolkien prologues and lore so it will be fun to be introduced to all these new characters, presuming they stay true to the source text. Although with all stories there’ll likely be some amalgamation of characters into one or complete drops where the story needs to.

They had the hottest source material around, then they fired the Tolkien experts and went with an opinion-pool fanfic. The Tolkien institutt held back om the rights for middle earth for years in fear of corrupting the works. Being «the worlds most expensive show» they had all the means to do Tolkien’s works justice, they just decided not to.

@@TopTableGaming I don't think it is particularly necessary to have seen the show at this stage to know it's going to be a stark departure from the source material. Comments like "have you seen it" display, to put it kindly, a naive lack of critical thinking. Edit: It may be a good show - interesting, entertaining and with a great production quality - but I think it's safe to say canonically there will be events and characters misrepresented.

A couple of Great videos here Steve, my honest opinion is that I never thought we would see any more middle-earth after the films again and this just makes me happy allowing us to go back into that world brings me joy! I don’t want to dwell on it as you have said it’s an adaptation just as the films were and before they came out they were highly controversial as well but no matter what we still have the source material at the heart of all this! Again Great work mate!

@@TopTableGaming It makes snese that they would want it, but the issue is does it make financial sense for them to buy it? Its an additional cost on top of the current license so it would have to bring them additional revenue of more than those new costs whilst also simultaneously makign sure the current line of models are still profitable and that all those customers just don't move to the new products 'forgetting 'the old range. Then you add in one more dimension that is if they don't buy it then someone else will and then they are going to face competition which will drop their sales. Basically unless they have a great plan that can make it really profitable or are happy to take minimal earnings/or a loss then I would say its isn't a great situation this puts GW in tbh

@@JulianY2K12 do you not entertain either of these two of many facts? - the text was written in a time when our world was very very white, this isn’t an opinion. It’s fact, so that text will have been influenced my that and we live in a very different world now - the actors black or otherwise are playing a part of a make believe character. Elves and dwarves and orcs aren’t real so why why would the actors colour come into it? A lot of these arguments fall back to skin colour and it’s actually sad to see in this day and age. I’ve seen a lot of people online preaching what THEY believe Tolkien would have wanted, no one knows, no one making these comments knew him personally, it’s madness, the world has changed for the better in the last 100 years, so a show based on a text 100 years old will obviously have changes, it’s not hard to work out. Arwen never took Frodo to Rivendell but we all are happy with that, one of many things that at the time people mined about.

@@TopTableGaming Middle earth is based on northern european mythology (not southern european or slavic culture). Modern day europe being more diverse than it was when tolkien wrote the story does not have any effect on the older myths and legends. It's like saying the cast of 47 ronin should be diverse because modern day japan has a higher concentration of non-japanese citizens than it did back when the story first emerged.
@JulianY2K12

@@TopTableGaming you have some good points but there seems to be a pattern of established IPs getting tarnished by modern day politics. I can only imagine the black actors were hired out of tokenism (since an all white cast would be considered inherently racist, somehow) rather than any creative reasons.

I am really looking forward to this movie, and the trailer was exciting. Everything that was shown had to be approved by both Amazon and the Tolken Estate. I gaurantee they all have seen this trailor, and if there was a problem, The Estate surely would have not let this trailor be released as it was. The Estate also gave permission to add new characters, whom would still need to be approved. There were all kinds of adaptations in Jackson' work (like Arwen rescuing Frodo) which many who complain about Amazon's adaption, are Ok with now. Give it shot and as Oddball once said, "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? " and let others enjoy something for a change.

It's fan fiction, and (given the lack of a continuous narrative of anything in the Second Age) it must be. But you inadvertently hit on my problem when talking about the Second Age hobbits, who do not correspond to anything Tolkien wrote about them, and cannot be reconciled to Tolkien's writing without procrustean rationalizations. You say you have no problem with this; and that it will "let people know where the hobbits came from". But it emphatically will not do that; at least not where they came from in Tolkien's imagined world. But the audiences who have not delved into these works _will_ think that this is somehow 'canon' or 'authoritative' or part of Tolkien's vision. And I _do_ have a problem with this. Jackson was guilty of this too, but as Huck said of Mr. Twain, "There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth."
