No, not Legolas' father. This series is 3000 years (plus) before the Peter Jackson movies. There will be very few characters that will be the same. The elf in the scene warning that darkness will fall on all peoples is Gil-galad, high king of one of the tribes of elves. He was in the Fellowship of the Ring, in the opening montage, but then you saw nothing more of him. In my opinion it is best if you don't worry about reading up on the backstory and I certainly encourage you to stay away from the very noisy whiners. Just judge the series on its own merits.
