I think the biggest sin the LOTR movies committed, was making Gimli a joke character. I mean, even here - in the ONE place you'd expect to see him kicking ass, he's still just bumbling around. That axe throw was probably the most badass thing he got to do in any of those movies.

0:51 I love the looks of the Fellowship as the anticipation builds. Gandalf is ready if anything to fight some orcs. Not simply from experience, but as his purpose as a wizard to face down evil. Aragorn, Legolas, and Boromir are hardened combatants who are keeping a clear head before the battle begins. Gimli is pissed off and rearing, eager to avenge his fallen kin and get some payback. Meanwhile the four Hobbits are terrified but able to keep it together.

Dude has survived years of defending a city that is ruled by a madman (Who is also B's papa), watching many of his friends and comrades losing their lives, he's found the heir of Gondor who seems to have a pretty dang low opinion of humanity, he's been helping guard four hobbits to go to Moria (aka Hell) to destroy the very item his father bid him to bring home, and now... a cave troll. He's just like 157% DONE with this crap, and now he's got more. PS: Love how Boromir is the only one who moved to comfort Gimli, was sarcastic about the troll, and later he personally carries Frodo away to safety.

Spright Mir I personally don't like the tight shots and shaking cameras that action movies tend to use. It makes it extremely difficult to tell what's going on and borders on motion sickness. However I suppose it has to be done or else it would be too easy to tell when actors are real or stunt doubles.
@comical9587
@comical9587 6 жыл бұрын
I agree, shaky cams are my personal bane. Another nitpick, not restricted to LotR but fantasy movies/games as a whole, is the overuse of monster growling and screeching. If you got a large beast like the troll in this scene, please stop making it shout all the damn time with these generic pitched-down lion-like roars. Overexposure to sounds decreases effectiveness.

The movies are awesome, don't get me wrong. But I would have liked a bit more work on the choreography part of the fights themselves. It seems that in most action scenes, whenever a blow is about to land, there's a cut. And that's not how you should do action movies. When you film action scenes, you have to let the actors speak, not the cameras. Actors must show they can fight. Lord of the Rings is absolutely beautiful and legendary, especially on large scale battles. But in close-up encounters... Game of Thrones did a lot better there. These scenes remind me of the melee fighting in the Taken series. 80+ cuts for a single fight. That's not the best way to present an action piece. Again, I absolutely love the movies and the work of Peter Jackson. I just wanted to say that they could have improved on this one tiny aspect to make them perfect for me. But I am not disappointed or anything.

@JamesTobiasStewart
@JamesTobiasStewart 9 ай бұрын
And logically; he fires later and takes longer to aim. Legolas has mained Archery skills, while Aragorn is a swordsman who knows his way around a bow. Hence Aragorn is perfectly competent while he can stand still and take the time he needs to aim, but as soon as movement is required to stay alive, he ditches the bow and goes for the sword. Legolas meanwhile has the mastery necessary to aim and fire extremely quickly, allowing him to keep using the bow throughout. A nice showing of the difference between a competent archer and a master archer.
@Zombiewithabowtie

The addition of a bow was (I believe) at Viggo Mortensen's suggestion, as he pointed out that the easiest way for a man, who lived in the wilds for months at a time and was constantly on the move, to hunt would be with a bow and arrow.

InfamousMedia In the main timeline? A bit more. And in the extra material, we learn about some events that happened to the Steward family prior to the main story. Such as about their family history, dynamics, individual personality, some things that happened here and there in their lives (such as Boromir being Faramir's protector when they were little and always looking out for him, Boromir as a child asking Denethor, how long it takes for the stewards to become kings and Denethor answering that the stewards will never become kings) and so on. For most of this fight Troll was portrayed with wide frame and quick chaotic responses of fighters that gives space to breathe for the viewer, then drops this absolute tombstone of a sequence with troll focusing first on hobbits, most vulnerable of the group and right after only on Frodo himself. We are forced into narrower, constricting frames hiding rights next to panicking Frodo when this brute is searching for him, more real than ever before, we can almost smell his breath. Paying attention to the reaction of the Fellowship when Frodo was impalled was also a gem, every single reaction had to be shown to highlight personal bond that sudenly ignated courage to protect their friend and act despite fear. From this exact moment the Fellowship is not closed with troll anymore, now troll is the one closed with them.

They rushed The Hobbit a lot. Plus CGI sucked when they were making LOTR so they probably didn't want to risk it so they had like actual actors as orcs and stuff. +Dzh123 Its not that everyone hates it, it's a good movie, its just compared to the LOTR, its a pile of shit. +Dzh123 after reading the book, I definitely liked the movies a lot less. seriously pissed me off the things they added to the movie just to get people to watch, like Azog's story line, and Legolas being in the story. only thing I thought was actually slightly better than the book was the actual battle of five armies, because that part the book rushed really quickly, although the build up and tension between the men, elves, and dwarves was great. but yeah, them animating Dain was just another piece that ruined what could've been a great thing.
@dzh1239
@dzh1239 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Carter I think the reason they added so many things that weren't in the book was so that it would actually lead up to the Lord of the Rings series. Yeah the Azog story was out of place but I think it was an attempt to give Thorin more character. I liked the whole necromancer thing because it really set you up for Sauron's return. The books didn't lead up as much. Getting back to Azog and Thorin one thing I hated is that it seemed like they were trying to make Thorin like Aragorn

Simply awesome!

I really like that part that starts around 2:10 when Sam is about to be killed by that cave troll. Aragorn and Boromir are pulling on its chain, but Boromir is thrown across the room and loses his sword. Then an orc wants to kill Boromir who's pretty much defenseless at that moment, but Aragorn spots it, picks up Boromir's sword and hurls it right through the orc, therefore saving Boromir's life 👌🏻 And Sean Bean's delivery of "They have a cave troll" is still one of the best things I've ever heard 😂

And if you were trying to compare them to each other when it comes to visuals and production Lord of the Rings Total Budget: 281,000,000, split over a running time of 726 minutes. Game of Thrones: Total budget is around 450,000,000 but is split over a running time of well over 3000 minutes... OF COURSE LOTR looks better...

Watching this scene right after the snow troll scene in ROP, the difference is night and day In this scene there's build up and fear while in ROP there's fear but no build up to that fear. During the actual fight they are actually struggling and it's super tense. They geniunely seem to be having lots of trouble fighting this troll yet they have 4 great warriors and a wizard on their side. Granted they are also dealing with orcs in addition to the troll but this one troll still required 4 warriors and a wizard to beat while the snow troll in ROP took 30 seconds to a minute from an elf. No tension or any hint of struggling from the ROP scene. Maybe they did this to make galadriel seem powerful but gandalf is super powerful and he had trouble fighting against the cave troll

Plus this one has more risks, the fellowship already bonded (we saw it on screen), we know that if someone dies (or frodo dies), they'd be devastated or the mission will fail. We don't see it on RoP because they made Galadriel a cold and revenge-driven warrior commander who doesn't give a shit about her team. Plus they made the other elves incompetent (wtf, they're elves), you can't root for her mission either since we didn't even see the bond that she has with her brother. You can't also feel that if they fail in that cave, the world will be doomed because Sauron's presence isn't even given value by other group of elves. You can't even justify how she's good (without using the books or her AGE), because it's not even shown (except her stacking helmets?).

Bro, the new shows fight scene is way better!! That ninja chick flipped and stuff and killed the big thing super dope fast all whilst never needing no man, especially whyut man. Slay queen, stunning and brave. Maybe if you weren't raysis you'd give the new show its due bro. Sorry if I misgendered you.

everyone points out the ease with which Galadriel takes down a troll. But what about cinematics and basic movements that feel ten times better and more real in this 21years old scene, than "stunning visual masterpiece" of rings of cringe. I dont understand quite frankly how that aesthetics works regarding viewer senses, but it feels that it is about overuse of cgi and lazy choreography of amazon producers and screenwriters

Very well thought, and put. While surface level complaints are easy, you hit at the truth right here. If ROP had the same level of production design an thought put into every scene then the changes they’ve made would be much more accepted.

Say what you want about The Hobbit (I personally really enjoyed them), i can't watch LOTR the same way again, especially FOTR, When Gandalf is looking over old maps or when Bilbo is telling his stories, i get far more emotion out of those scenes now, like i was their and they're my memories (well, in a way they are lol) This scenes best describes it, yes there were skeletons about the place and a tomb but you never felt too bad, i always felt worse for Gimli tbh. But now, seeing Ori's last words while at his friends resting place waiting to die, and Balin's tomb being destroyed, it adds so much more emotion to an already fantastic scene.

Yeah well put. Kinda of like when they first enter Moria and Gandalf tells the Fellowship about when Thorin gave Bilbo the Mithril. Pretty cool seeing it in the Hobbit.

@@oalonzoa1745 and that Gandalf said this "I never told him, that it's worth is more than the shire" because the mirthril shirt was gifted by thorin who considered Bilbo his friend cuz he stuck to the end of it all even after Thorin was driven into greed for the arkenstone. And Thorin realized what he's done and as an last act of acknowledgement before his dying breath they exchanged some words. An gift from an king and that of an friend was worth more than anything.

1:17 I really like this moment: unseen enemy is hacking through the door and our heroes shoot it and elicit an inhuman scream. It works so well at characterising the enemy army as this singular monster that can be wounded but is damn hard to kill.

“Begone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!" A cold voice answered: 'Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye." A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may." "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!" Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I!”

There is a video game called team fortress 2 that has frying pans as a melee weapon. Plus the most expensive weapon in the game, The *Gold* frying pan allows you to turn your dead enemies into gold statues when you kill them.
