Watch the story of a remarkable relationship between two great ape species; one man and one male Bornean orangutan. Set in the humid peat swamp forests of Central Kalimantan, Borneo.
Gendut defies stereotypical orangutan behaviour, he is feared by many. One man, Isa, risked 2000 days of bravery and danger to develop a totally unique relationship between "orang" and "orangutan". In doing so, the work by the Orangutan Foundation International which is paramount to conservation for this critically endangered species and their rapidly diminishing habitat can continue. But there's more to it than that.
A story of friendship, beauty and loss.
- Produced and Filmed by Deya Ward
- A Masters degree thesis for MA Wildlife Filmmaking, Bristol, UK.
- With thanks to Dr Birute Galdikas and the Orangutan Foundation International
- Original score by Corvina Xinyan Lee
- Crowdfunded on Indiegogo

Calling him a person is so right. People forget they are highly intelligent. Have their own social educate social structure to live within. Here we can see his frustration of being bested in a fight. That basically sends him away from his home and family. When we are hurt we act out. Throw things, hit things trying to figure out how not to be cast out. I hope he comes back. But he "will" be changed. Or he has created his own Troup somewhere else. Either is acceptable but he will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to you all.

Thank you so much for watching my film The Lost Person of the Forest. I totally agree - I also wanted to play on the words because orangutan in Malay translates as person of the forest, but in many ways there is more than one person who is lost and I hoped that would reiterate just how similar humans and great apes are.

Created his own Troup? Hah! Another pontificating liberal white woman. Orangutans do NOT create "Troups", they are solitary animals, other than the strong bond that mothers form with their offspring, they live ALONE. Not in "troups".

@@Gman-109 I agree with you for most part, wild orangutans but this beautiful male was raised first by man, and was at a rehab before coming here, we don't know what happened to him. We don't have to say mean things to each other. Teach the ones that don't know , not hurt them with words.

However, there are many governments around the world consider that policy as abusive. The most influential governments even stress upon the increasing population as the strength of economic growth. Our human population on Earth is putting pressure on everything. From natural resources to wild animals. Also, wars.

Mudah2 an di suatu hari nanti Indonesia menjadi negara yg maju. Pola fikir, sikap dan sumber daya manusianya sejajar dgn negara2 lainnya, aamiin

Its great work that these people are doing and its amazing that these orphaned and captive Orangutans are back in the forest. However if they need to be fed to survive is that really a wild Orangutan? I am genuinely curios because to me its like saying you moved out of your parents house but you are really living in the garage and eating their food. Yeah your not physically in your parents house but are you really independent and moved out? Also does anyone think the wild male killed Gendut? Is that something a wild Orangutan would do?

If you want to find out more information I would be more than happy to explain the reasons more in depth. Gendut this male was spotted after I created this film but since then, and whilst there is a dominant flanged male in that particular area, it is likely he has found a new location within the national park where he can be dominant. @@deyaward-niblett8197 That's nice. Having been born and raised in Malaysia, I can assure you that Orang - a now butchered English pronounced word, was always referring to "man", and only due to recent political correctness, was "human", or "person" added to the mix. Ask anyone there, and they'll instantly tell you that Orangutan is "MAN" of the forest. If you lived in Indonesia for any length of time, you'd likely know this, and are just ignoring it. Whatever - great film.

@@deyaward-niblett8197 REALLY great film in fact, best short I've seen in a few years, for sure. My kids have watched it 1/2 a dozen times now I think. Great narration.

I’m sure this video is great but I cannot continue listening to this lady whisper, it seriously makes me feel uneasy.

yunggoth thank you for watching my film ‘The Lost Person if they Forest’. As well as filming editing and producing this I also did opt to do the narration as it is an extremely personal location and story. I actually am not whispering here or changing my normal voice but I am sorry that you find it challenging to watching with my voice narrating. I definitely did not intend for that to be the case. Thank you for your time in watching my work. Regards, Deya
