The saved game is now on the Steam workshop steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
A 1:1 recreation made with Transport Fever 2, set in 1910 and based on the OS maps of the time.

Important - Limitations of this medium
-------------------------------------------------------
I can only use the assets (houses, industrial buildings, farms, stations, rails, scenery etc.) available either in the base game or generously made available by modders.
There are very few British models of houses, farms, cottages and shops of this period available for the game, so I have used whatever was to hand and I hope that the general impression is convincing even if the detail is not.
Some assets, like fences and doors, flicker. This is a TF2 problem and there is nothing I can do about it. Sorry.

3:15 today the bridge that crosses over this road in Bridgnorth is now gone completely and the entrance to Bridgnorth tunnel has been overgrown and it’s not accessible to get up there because the residential homes have taken up that section

Enjoyed your video, while as a fireman at Stourbridge 84F we had a job, that went tender first to Dudley with a 28XX, wait for Midland men to bring train in from Cardington in Bedfordshire, worked train with RAF personnel to Bridgnorth, empty stock to Shrewsbury, and back light engine via Wombourne branch, great little job.

In 1910 the countryside was close to the town and folk could easily walk out there. The 1930s saw a massive expansion of suburbia.

I lived on the outskirts of Kidderminster in the early 1990s, and visited SVR at Bridgenorth a couple of times. The tunnel north must be behind the sheds as I didn't see it. A pity the tunnel can't be reopened, it would be amazing to easily travel through a countryside with no roads.

The tunnel is exactly where I have placed it - across the road from where the current SVR tracks end. The bridge that used to be there has gone.

I knew a chap who was involved in the planning of the housing estate and he always said that if they knew there were ever plans to extend the Severn Valley towards Ironbridge they would have built around the line because having a steam railway through an estate would have raised the house prices!

This brings back many memories , as i board at Apley hall for 5 years and this was the way sometimes we walk to bridgnorth, how ever i would like to point out that eventhro you set this in 1910 the cutting is much deeper and much more tree cover on both sides of the track here and it was a very dark section to walk through, there is also a bridge that is built to match the same style as the hall and is totally one-off and that this part of the valley had been re landscaped on the track side so that the guests/ sometimes royal guests from europe could view the trains, when the estate held shoots. it would have been nice to point-out that the bridge from linley station is a white suspension bridge which is only seen again in shrewsbury, i fully understand the confines of game which limits your detailing , one of your capsaicin would make up for the lack of choose in the game graphic dept . i look forward to viewing the next section 👍
@anthonyguter
@anthonyguter 2 ай бұрын
I based tree cover on the OS map from around 1910. As for the cuttings, I kept the railway at a constant height on this section and let the game make the cuttings and embankments. I know my version of the bridge at Linley is wrong but I could not find a way to make it look better.

We did indeed Nick. I remember it well, (I boarded from 1972 >1977). It was a great walk and I remember a property that had a few VW Beetles, one being a very rare split rear-screen model. I used to try and imagine what it would have been like if the railway still ran as I walked to Bridgnorth. I'm not going to describe them as 'happy days' as I struggled somewhat due to being Autistic (although not diagnosed back then), but the walk over Linley bridge and down the railway line was a wonderful escape; as was the landscape generally around Apley Park.

This is excellent work. When I started work as a field engineer, I travelled around Shropshire daily and was fascinated by the remains of old infrastructure still visible. The line north of Bridgnorth of especial interest to me. You have given me the opportunity to experience it as close to how it was. Are you going to cover the line south to Hartlebury, and the lines through the wyre forest towards Ludlow? There is a branch line just after Ironbridge along Wenlock edge.

Thanks, the "experiencing it as it was" is what motivates me. I have done the current SVR and may release it, perhaps as it was in 1910, but there is so much KZfaq content for that railway, I am not sure if it is worth it.

I must get around to playing with this game, had it for ages but not had time to look at it. From a film point of view I would like to do something similar but using cab shots, running along side and passing shots from location as the one think lacking is the engine/train as such it could almost be a drone running down the track. Don’t know if this is possible but I will give it a try.
@anthonyguter
@anthonyguter Ай бұрын
It is easy to do drone shots, just move the cabview camera a bit. It will track the train from whatever angle you leave it. I chose not to do this because otherwise I might never have stopped adding and editing footage.

Try Stephen Spry's Northumbria series on KZfaq. Starts with how to use a height map and then how to put a real life landscape onto a TF2 map. And experiment yourself with recreating small scenes that you are familiar with, such as a few streets from your home town. Practice is everything.

There are a number of anomalies within this simulation. Stencilled speed restriction signs were not used at this time. And if they were, they did not look anything like the ones we know today. The fence appears to run alongside the track on one side only. Each telegraph pole has a curious grey box clamped to it .- what is it? The wires suspended between each pole do not match up with the insulators, which themselves are badly designed.
@anthonyguter
@anthonyguter Ай бұрын
Where to start... I wanted to put up speed signs so that anyone watching would understand why the trains were runnning slowly. Thes ones I used are the only assets available. Sometimes I left out the fences because in reality they can be lost in the undergrowth and also because it is tedious putting them in and doesnt really matter. I am one of the very few KZfaqrs who even bothers with fences. The poles come from a mod. I may have picked the wrong model but I really don't think it makes much difference and if you are unhappy with the insulators then it is down to the modder not me. I make it clear in my description that I am not a modder myself and can only use what others kindly make available. Anyway most people seem to enjoy the videos....

This is gorgeous, what's your workflow/process for transposing the information from the maps and into TF2?
@anthonyguter
@anthonyguter 2 ай бұрын
Decide what area can be fitted into a map - 24k square was just wide enough to get the railway in at 1:1. Get a heightmap of the area, import into a new blank map in TF2, tweak it to get the water level right. Get the OS maps (lots of screenshots), stitch together to make 8km or 4km squares and then use MadHatter's mappit mod to display them over the empty map, paint in the main railways, roads and key buildings. Then place the assets bit by bit, using the maps and also photographs of the original line. Finally, run the trains and make sure that everything that can be seen from the cabview looks presentable.

I use static models because having the AI crowd the platforms with people would look ridiculous. There is a mod called Plebs Magneteer that lets you create as many AI people as you want and to make any place industrial, commercial or residential so that they move between them; I have no need for that in my recreations
