I'll be the first to admit that this video isn't that great. I did the reduction back in June, and have been working extremely infrequently on the analysis since then. Over the past few days, I decided to just grind it out, since I had some spare time, and I honestly had gotten a bit bored of it. So apologies if my analysis is a bit dull, and lacking insight. I promise the next video will be better!

AMAZING WORK. I would be SO interested to see you or someone else take a stab at The Compys Dine, which I think is one of Williams's scariest pieces ever. Thanks for this epic work and labor of love!

Patrick, you have outdone yourself again, sir. What a ridiculously incredible analysis! The 3/4 to 5/8 combination, and the three 3/8s and 2/4 patterns are incredible ways to bring up some IMPENDING event. I see this is not just the brutality of the humans, but also, bringing a certain level of empathy and feeling of how terrified the dinosaurs were during the hunt. What I say over and over is how well John Williams uses the entire orchestra. Williams doesn't shy away from woodwinds, but rather, highlights their abilities, and the way he has a great call and response between different groups of instruments, it's a reason why he's a top film composer. Sadly, I see this kind of incredible orchestration become more rare every year since 2010. A LOT of the focus in Hollywood today, right or wrong, is the use of much more sound design, lots of brass, and lots of drums with a steady time signature and key signature. Mr. Williams shows how much more exciting extended orchestrations techniques can be.

Thanks man! All great points. When diving into this cue I was surprised at how much depth there actually is - such a shame that it wasn’t used.

Nice! Thanks for putting this together. I always love digging into the not-super-famous John Williams cues. So much depth in all of his writing. So much to learn from it!

I will also add, on top of the time signature shifts, Williams, for more instability, uses a 2 + 3 pattern, rater than the more stable, 3 + 2 pattern. Just incredible.

Certainly! Kind of links in with what I was mentioning about uncommon metric stresses - because the 5/8 bar begins with a group of 2 quavers, it can feel like a regular 3/4 bar right up until the beginning of the next bar, which suddenly displaces the beat by a quaver.

Could I ask for a pdf version, purely for educational purposes for my personal needs. Of course, if it costs something, I'll pay. Thanks and my dear Patrick.
