It won't be the same, but the DS Penske livery in Formula E is gorgeous, especially the one-off they ran in Monaco this year, about the closest you can get to seeing a Lotus around an F1 track in the modern day.

I still feel like Senna could have been champion in 1986, if only that Renault engine was more reliable. The 98t was an equal chassis to the FW11, the MP4/2C had hit its development ceiling, like the MP4-17d of 2003. Mansell and Piquet were taking points off each other, and Prost was driving a 2 year old car. All the pieces were there for Senna, but typical Renault reliability struck, which is an issue they haven’t solved even today which is why Red Bull went to Honda and Alonso left Alpine (aside from Ocon being himself).

2003 is a great comparison for sure. I think in much the same way any one of Schumacher, Raikkonen or Montoya would’ve deserved the title that year, any one of the four title protagonists of 1986 would’ve been a worthy champion, but for unreliable machinery!
@palm92
@palm92 2 ай бұрын
The Chassis was, but the engine wasn’t as reliable and also not as powerful. I wonder what would would have happened if the 98T had the Honda, as opposed to the 99T. I’ll one up you, the 98T was superior to the MP4/2. ‘86 is my favourite season as it’s one of the most brilliant WDCs in the 3rd best car with the 4 best engine.

I agree that Senna did elevate Lotus during the time he was around since it did feel like Lotus was a shell of their former selves after Chapman's passing so while the numbers show that Senna should have been a champion with Lotus, his time has to be considered a success in my eyes. Sure Lotus did take some risks during this time like the active suspension in 1987 but it felt they needed to take those chances to try and beat Williams and McLaren. The heroics that Senna showed also laid the groundwork for the dominant pairing of McLaren and Honda from 1988 which is another important part of this legacy too.

Post-Chapman Lotus was actually an improvement on 1979-80-81-82 which saw only one victory. The last Chapman glory year was 1978 and the success stopped abruptly after that. Senna, Ducarouge and Warr brought some glory back for a few years.

Afterwards, we both came to the same conclusion: this was Senna’s first dance, and it was Lotus’ last. The team threw everything and the kitchen sink to provide him with the opportunity, but it wasn’t enough for Senna to fulfill both his potential and destiny. While Lotus’ best days were long gone, Senna alone gave us one last reminder of what they were capable of, even if on occasion. That you summed up perfectly, in my opinion! Great video! It's fascinating how quickly Senna became basically a focal point in F1 and how quickly he learned how to play the game politically. In just two years he was already a top driver. Meanwhile in modern times you have to have at least 3 seasons to actually develop. Was thinking you could do a video on Gilles Villeneuve. Despite him being an undoubted legend. His stint is ultimately really disappointing from a results standard. In my opinion 2 titles definitely escaped him and even more maybe if he survived. + He comes from a really unusual background

Well that's a main point on the "senna goat" argument. He really developed in a unbelievable pace. And also, he always had grade A mind games. There's this story: during the pursue to find sponsors for his F1 debut, during a party with a company owner, he guaranteed he "would win in his first season". everyone started laughing, but senna was dead serious. A fact that the OP (this channel owner) should consider on a next video.

👀 Of all the 20 poles achieved by Lotus between 1979 and 1994, 16 were set by Senna between 1985 and 1987. His last one was taken at the 1987 San Marino GP, after which a Team Lotus car never started from first place on the grid again. And his last victory at Lotus (Detroit 1987) proved to be the last for that beloved and much-missed team. Cars powered by Renault in 85 (8 cars) and 86 (6 cars) took 16 poles, 15 of them by Senna alone. And 5 victories, 4 of them by Senna alone.

If you check the reliability record of Senna up until 1990, it shows that it wasn't luck. He punished his cars beyond the limit. Clark gets praised for how much care he took of his machinery, why shouldn't we apply this level of analysis to the rest? By that, not just praising a Prost for great reliability, but criticise those who pushed the car to breaking point and beyond. I get why Senna is so mystified and beloved, but in this facts are getting twisted and forgotten. Yes, he was the fastest, possibly ever. But faster and best are two separate things. Being consistent, error free, taking care of the car, etc. All those factors really go against Senna, and it's the difference between ranking him as the best ever and imo a more realistic 3rd-4th.

great video wrong as he may have been on other subjects, Warr had a fair point when it came to Senna's culpability for the reliability record of the Renault engines young Senna had a win-or-nothing mentality that produces great wins, what-ifs, but not championships, particularly when you account for the fragility of F1 machinery in the 1980s he was already the quickest driver in F1 by 1985, but the reason drivers like Prost or Piquet (when he thought he could win) were better is that they could grind out great results while nursing their cars to the finish by 1988 Senna had learned from experience (and had the example of Prost on the other side of the garage, as well as McLaren's institutional focus on the longer term picture) and was the full package the interesting what-if would be, what if Williams had been ruthless and ditched Laffite for 1984 to make room for Senna...

Senna at Williams ten years earlier is definitely an intriguing proposition. You can make an argument he could’ve been champion in 86 or 87. Would Honda have stayed with Honda if they had their favourite son Senna there? Would Senna be able to work with Williams long term, unlike so many others?
@fcjbencard
@fcjbencard 2 ай бұрын
would Honda have been happy by late 1985 to make Senna their number 1 driver and not push to bring in a proven champion in Piquet? because Senna-Piquet, as a teammate combination, with the delicate man-management of Frank Williams, would have gone so toxic that by the end of 1987 the remains of Williams would have needed to be encased in concrete and buried at sea (also, in this parallel universe I think we'd end up remembering Derek Warwick and Nigel Mansell very differently - now those are two very interesting drivers and careers to compare and contrast!)

This is a fascinating film but a bit too Senna fanboy-esque. Why not ask why De Angelis had vastly superior reliability in an identical car? Surely Senna was breaking the car. He was also using more fuel to get his speed than other drivers, hence the multiple empty tank scenarios? Don't get me wrong, Senna is one of the all-time greats, but I tend to think he is overly eulogised. If we applied the same " perfect season" approach to Mansell, he would have been 4x WDC. Alain Prost possibly 7-8x...

Doh. De Angelis was going slower. What good was his 'vastly superior reliability in an identical car'? He still lost to Senna BTW De Angelis had the new more fuel efficient Renault engine at Imola 1985 whereas Senna had to make do with the older engine. Identical, not always.

@kodakreeeam9971 No way Senna is behind Kimi or Alonso (and I thought me putting Alonso as the 7th greatest would be too much for everyone). And too early to put Max above.

I'm not really a Senna fan, but Senna's time at Lotus is what I want to remember of him. He was still and always an asshole on track but didn't really yap on about politics and spiritualism with the arrogance that he would do when he started winning at McLaren.

I speak Portuguese and you win the prize of the most Moronic comment. Senna's faith was real and WHO ARE YOU to question it? Furthermore, saw interviews with family and stuff, Senna was just a great human being with great values. If you're jealous of it, there's always space to be more like him. Or, you can go the playboy road like Piquet. Either way, ways of being. But you're NO ONE to question his faith. And considering he died first, doing what he loved and managed to do stuff that even today wasn't replicated (i.e. winning with no brakes, winning with only a gear), I tend to be inclined to think that God, whomever it may be, was really besides him.

@@aydankhaliq2967 You put spiritualism and arrogance in the same sentence. To make matters worse, you said Senna was an a**hole on track when he was just extremely competitive. Now, if I think about Schumacher, for whom I'd have a plethora of examples of being an a**hole on track and winning dirty, I think your words would apply better. But I guess in the end there's some Universe justice in all of it and the end results if we really go out and compare.

@@LarsFerdinand I'm sure every racing driver has a competitive spirit, but that doesn't mean we should wreck or sabotage our competitors. It's just plain wrong and at that point, it isn't sport. It's the start of a riot. Rules are there for a reason.

strongly disagree senna used lotus as a step, he did not try to lift the team, lift himself elio de angelis left because of his attitude, derek warwick was arguably denied by senna for 1986 i think senna caused lotus into descendancy indeliberately , he did not care about lotus btw his attitude is normal, lotus should have handled the situation

It's alright to admit you're misinformed and/or a know-nothing Lotus were subtly and inexorably already on the downswing when Senna joined seeing as IDK Colin Chapman had died and they weren't able to adequately replace that mind

Idk why you even say arguably, he straight up was denied because Ayrton saw him as a threat, crippling the team in the process as they had to make due with two mediocre supports so Senna's feelings didn't get hurt. Guy was fast but his ego was up in the fucking stratosphere, he's probably the most self-centered champion of all time. This whole Senna mysticism is getting really old tbh.

its not as good as the benetton legacy of schumacher, senna had to flee to the dominant team to win titles and then fled from them when there was a new dominant team, schumacher made team dominant then went and made another team dominant

Shumacher wouldn't have achieved anything with a 1988~1993 Lotus, nor would he have had success on the Peugeot-powered McLarens. Schumi was lucky to make the right connections on the Sauber Mercedes sports car effort, and ultimately that's where his success in F1 came from. He does deserve credit for getting those people involved with Benetton and then Ferrari, yes, but if you were to put him in Senna's context, things would be different.

@@peekaboo1575 no schumacher would have had success anywhere he went, he tested a ligier for 1 day and went a second faster than panis, good enough for 3rd on the grid at that years portugese gp when schumacher was out with injury his replacement mika salo came in and qualified as low as 18th on the grid in the 1999 ferrari, schumacher came back and put it on pole by a second, so you should look at mika salo's cars that he had in his career and imagine schumacher going at least 2 seconds faster, for example the 2000 sauber schumacher can win a title in that car schumachers success came from being an incredible driver and the people involved with benetton were lucky that schumacher came along, for example 1996 benetton, all the players still involved, race winning drivers involved, schumacher left, the wins left and the team was reduced to nothing

@MrRodzilla OK listen, Schumi is my GOAT and there's no denying he's the best to ever do it, but claiming he'd even get close to a title fight in a Sauber is next level delusion.

@@kodakreeeam9971 well salo was on average 0.518 slower than irvine in qualifying and schumacher was 0.947 quicker than irvine in qualifying that season, so lets just assume schumacher could qualify 1.465 faster than salo over the whole season so he gets pole in the 2000 australian gp in the sauber, sauber withdraws from brazil damaging schumachers title bid, schumacher rebounds to qualify 2nd at san marino, 6th in britain, pole in barcelona (i removed schumacher real 2000 barcelona ferrari pole time since there can only be 1 schumacher), 5th in european gp, 4th at monaco, 5th in canada, 2nd in france, pole in austria, 4th in germany, pole in hungary, 9th in belgium, 3rd at monza, 3rd at USA, 8th at suzuka, 5th at malaysia so thats 4 poles, 4 other top 3's and mostly competitive qualifying times, he could win a title with these performances, so whats wrong with this? are you disputing that schumacher can qualify 1.465 quicker than salo over a season? if you think that then you don't know about schumacher, he did more against all his benetton teammates how about we measure how far he was ahead of johnny herbert and then do the same for any of herberts old cars, like the 1996 or 1997 sauber, schumacher would definitely win the title in the 1999 stewart
