My biggest gripe with the Sterling Stingrays I’ve tried is their active pre amp they include in their basses. Just doesn’t sit right with my ear. So this bass being passive and not having that pre amp is very enticing to me. Plus the blessed short scale 😍😍 very nice review!

I have this bass, and I’m pretty sure position 1 is the standard stingray tone....parallel not series. The switch is Parallel/Single/Series. The series setting is noticeably louder even without the boost. Either way....it’s a SICK little boom broom 👍🏻!

Tipp: the G&L Kiloton has a similar, passive setup with one fat, switchable (single,serial,parallel), humbucker. The "Tribute Series" are great instruments, quite affordable and have the original US-made pickup built in.

This looks amazing. I added a series/parallel/single coil switch to my Stingray 12 years ago, it's something they should offer on all 'Rays - totally useful, extra tones while taking nothing away. This passive setup really sounds great - but try it on your stock Stingray and you'll be equally amazed.

@@foljs5858 Very True. Shortscale basses reaching at an all time peak in popularity right now. Fender has 4 different versions of their Mustang and 1 Squire Mustang. Hofner has three different price ranges of their Violin and Club basses. Gibson has the Les Paul Junior DC Tribute and the SG Standard. Epiphone has the EB-0, the Allen Woody Rumblekat and the Viola Bass. Ibanez makes the Mikro GSRM 20, the TMB30, the AGB200, and the Artcore AFB200. Danelectro has the Longhorn and the 56 Bass. Spector makes the Bantam. There's the Lakland Skyline Hollowbody. Gretsch makes the G5442BDC, and the G2220 Junior Jet. Guild makes the Starfire Bass II. The number of shorter basschoices is kind of ridiculous now, but medium scale 32" basses are pretty limited. There's the Squire Classic Vibe Jaguar and the Ibanez Mezzo. I could go on.

So glad to see another full review of this. There aren't too many on YT yet. Bought one last weekend. Love it. It's a bit heavier than I thought, and moreso than my Gretsch Jr Jet but plays so well and the parallel/single/series sounds add so much flexibility... Although I'm a relative novice so need to work out when and how best to use each tone... But i have played more this past week than ever thanks to this bass.

How do you like the Gretsch? I'm considering buying one.
@Shelsight
@Shelsight 4 жыл бұрын
@@Wr1terTyp3 hey, sorry for delay. I loved the gretsch as my first bass, and even though I have the Music Man now (as my present to myself for improving), the Gretsch is definitely staying! Its similar length (30.7) but the Gretsch strings seem slightly wider apart than the MM, which actually helped me more when starting, and the controls are simpler to use but still gave me some nice options. The tone is so deep, it sounds wonderful but not muddy at all as some short scales can be, apparently. I did get the store to set it up properly which I know helped, and I got a good strap and straplocks to ensure it was safe. It was perfect for my starter bass but I found on KZfaq & TalkBass plenty of v experienced players who have it as well. Only regret is not getting the Torino Green as it wasn't available. Others here might be able to chip in with alternatives but I love my Gretsch!

Interesting to see how it stacks up against the Short Scale Stingray which MM brought out last year at about 4 x the price of your Sterling. Do you feel like doing a shoot out? Really wanting to pick this up, I’m a guitarist but started on bass, I have a cheap stagg short scale but mainly use it for jam sessions and don’t feel confident enough in it to bring to a gig, I do enjoy short scale more cause I like to move fast while playing bass so I’m definitely gonna pick this baby up, thanks man great video!!!

How does the E string feel Patrick? Is it loosey-goosey or does it have good tension? Zang!
@TheProJuicers1
@TheProJuicers1 4 жыл бұрын
depends more on the string rather than the bass. if the strings are too loose, just get higher gauge strings.
@T-Hawkeyes
@T-Hawkeyes 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheProJuicers1 I think its a little more complicated than that. Short Scale Basses are notorious for a flappy E string. I'm putting Deep Talking Bass stings on my Mustang 'cuz they have the highest tension PER string gauge. They also make LOW TENSION FLATS that are the same gauge.

Patrick (or other experienced bass players) - Any advice re when or how best to use each of the 3 modes/tones? I'm loving my Sterling SS but never had these tonal options before.

Parallel = standard old school stingray, great for funk, soul, R&B, Motown etc, but can work for rock too. I use this setting primarily when I slap. Series = louder and more in your face, great for rock and metal. Sometimes use this for slapping. Sounds great with pick. Single coil = you can kind of get the Jaco bridge pickup thing - great for cutting through mix and soloing. Might work really well with some pedals too. These are just starting points. You really have to try them out and see what you like. Just remember bedroom sound does not equal rehearsal space sound which does not equal gig sound which does not equal recording sound. I have a 1991 MM five with the blade style selector switch which gives the same pickup options but with three band eq. I use them all. I'm seriously looking to add this bass as well.

First Stingray in 40 years to not have active onboard preamp. How is it really going to sound Stingray without that boost? I cant see how they dropped the ball on that one. Pickup selector is interesting, but preamp should be in there. What were they thinking?

@josephpbrown
@josephpbrown 4 жыл бұрын
What you start with depends on what you want to start with. You could start by finding the type of bass player you want to be, then find out a bass that works for that style. Prioritise having a bass you want to play, or else you wouldn't want to play it and just give up. Go for the sound you like too, search for samples of people playing the basses on KZfaq. Also take into account budget, etc.

@@convohome5290 You never know, just see if you can borrow one from someone for a week (I used the one at my school when I started out) just to get used to the instrument, try and follow basic tutorials on stuff like plucking the strings (surprisingly complex) and where to put your fingers, Bass is a really easy instrument to learn, you just have to learn it, and I encourage you to do so
