The pollan is a species found in five Irish loughs and nowhere else in the world. Three of those populations are in serious decline. More than 95% of Lough Neagh pollan caught are exported. How on earth can this be a sustainable fishery?

Only in 5 loughs and 3 of those populations are in serious decline due to overfishing in the past, changes in water quality, predation and competition. It is illegal to (rod and line) fish for their close relatives vendace and powan in England and Scotland, even if it is catch and release. Around 95% of Lough Neagh pollan caught are exported. I find it very hard to believe that this is a sustainable fishery.

Lough beg adjacent is void of fish and the rights are controlled on Lough neagh for course fishing !! A shame
