An interesting take on the poem, though heavily influenced by the mistaken impression that "The Raven" was a Gothic horror poem. I have concluded, after over a decade of independent research, that it was a grief poem commemorating a temporary faith crisis, written by Mathew Franklin Whittier, the younger brother of Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Mathew would have written it, according to my findings, in December of 1841, based on a real-life event. The entire set and setting of the poem was literal autobiography--only when the raven enters, does it become symbolic. Poe's claim to authorship was merely a brazen public scam, knowing, somehow, that the real author was not in a position to defend himself.
