Almost all European people emigrated to Portugal at one time or another in history. Europe, especially in the Middle Ages, was constantly crushed by numerous famines and this almost never happened in Iberia. In Portugal, in the coldest winters, large, sweet and juicy oranges grow in January. The amount of vitamin C during the winter that Mother Nature makes available to human beings in this region is a miracle!

Portugal is composed of two former Roman provinces: Gallaecia and Lusitania. Saying that Portugal's origin is in the Lusitanians in not accurate. The cradle of the nation is in Gallaecia. That idea of Portugal=Lusitania was a concept invented in the 16th century in order to associate the origin of the nation with an historical and heroic myth of a people battling the Romans (remember Viriato and Sertorio).

Are you talking about Portuguese?
@FaithfulOfBrigantia6 ай бұрын
It wasn't reclassified, it still isn't classified. In the 2010's the idea it could have been related to the Italic languages arose. This is compatible with the theory Proto-Celtic and Proto-Italic both derive from a common Italo-Celtic language, brought by the Indo-European steppe herders when they moved into Bell Beaker territory. This would make Lusitanian a conservative sample of Proto-Italo-Celtic before they diverged.
@HeAndrRoiz6 ай бұрын
Only Prósper is bold enough to call it Italic, but that makes no sense historically nor archaeologically because ties between Italy and (west) Iberia only happen during the Roman period. It's almost certainly just one of the languages that evolved from the earlier Italo-Celtic branch of early NW-IE languages that existed throughout western Europe after the Bell Beaker expansion, making it close to Italic and Celtic, but not a sub-branch of either.

From what I read Portuguese identity didn't exist as separate from other Iberian/Spanish people until the Reconquista and only came about because of a family dispute, so an accident really, not long-forgotten Lusitanian tribal affiliation. What became Northern Portugal was governed by the daughter of the king of Leon and her husband who ended up later falling out with her sister Queen of Leon and so parted ways to eventual independence....
@lordcommandernox91976 ай бұрын
Of course, the Portuguese didn't exist until Portugal formed, Countries didn't exist, Portugal is one of the oldest in Europe. What existed were people who were divided by tribes, the Lusitani were distinct from the others, also the Lusitani were comprised of 33 smaller tribes, and were cousins to the Galicians of Iberia (not the ones in eastern Europe.) and not related to the Greeks to the west and other Iberian tribes who were always philosophically different. Their identity was still alive during the period of the Reconquista, in fact, the Muslims who defeated Roderic only did so with the help of the natives who were fed up with the feudalist system the Germans brought with them, so they allied with the Ummayad in secret and switched sides mid-battle, just as the Lusitanis would have. The Muslims were the scientists and the tolerant ones back then. First ever recorded human flight was in Cordoba during that period, look it up. The German Christians were stealing people's land and forcing them to convert, while the Muslims only wanted taxes, just like the Romans once did, so my ancestors had an easy choice. As a result during the Ummayad period, native descendants were awarded their ancestral lands back in one of the largest agrarian reforms in Europe. The identity has always been here, and will always be here, besides, the Lusitani still ARE, there are still ethnic Lusitani people (and horses) in Portugal. Is every Portuguese person of Lusitani descent? Nope. Are there still large populations left? Yep. Do we love the ideals of freedom and humanism and rank top five in Libertarian Countries? Yep. People have co-opted the term _identity politics_ 'cause this is what it really means. It's the reason the Basques and Catalonians want more autonomy. Autonomy only the Portuguese retained in Iberia, every other culture facing assimilation by Madrid and the Castilians.
@lordcommandernox91976 ай бұрын
Our first King might have been from Burgundy and had a mother from Leon, but he was raised here, and when his house was replaced by that of Avis, a bastard lineage, the Lusitani were back in the throne. Want to know more about the Lusitani? You can always check their site: Aceltrebopala
@jamesevans18906 ай бұрын
@@lordcommandernox9197 Absolutely, there is rich local tradition and culture throughout Europe and the world, and resentment to central authority - to rule by "outsiders" - is almost always present. I would disagree with the notion of the Muslims being tolerant though, that is a stereotype of Al-Andalus that doesn't really bare close scrutiny. They destroyed nearly all churches in urban areas and subjected Christians to punitive taxation, which was a form of forced conversion for those who couldn't afford to pay, and periodic martyrdom. During the Reconquista the Christians were generally no less tolerant to the conquered than the Muslims, beyond displacing muslim inhabitants from urban areas so they were guaranteed to be loyal centres of defence. Many Christians were taken as slaves and many Jewish people emigrated from Muslim areas to Christian areas in medieval Spain to avoid repression - unfortunately Christian Spain later engaged in horrendous anti-Semitic acts and the evil of the Inquisition as the darkness of religious zealotry took a firmer hold in Europe. Al-Andalus benefitted from substantial urban areas and close connections with the wider Mediterranean and Muslim worlds so enjoyed a higher standard of living and shared scientific knowledge compared to the northern, mountainous Christian kingdoms which were impoverished and fighting for survival. The Christian north did eventually develop proto-universities and was keen to gain knowledge from both the Muslim South and the rest of Europe.
@lordcommandernox91976 ай бұрын
@@jamesevans1890 The Ummayad were very tolerant for the time even when compared to Christians... Especially when compared to Crhistians here, the Vandals, Suebi and Visigoths. You can see it in their art which survided with lush landscapes animals and even seggcy women, their patronage of the arts and sciences was like that of the Medici in the Renaissance. The term wise men which we associate with long beards and mage dresses is a reference to that period too and the way sages would dress, it wasn't uncommon to see European Christian Nobility from the North studying Latin and Arabic in Muslim Universities, they were very tolerant if you had coin. The Muslims became more regressive after the Abbasid took over, and also lost the status as benevolent exotic elites during that time over here, which led to the natives once again siding with a Germanic descendant and pointing their arms back at the "invader". As for the taxes issue, the reason the Muslims became popular to begin with, was they would forgo all taxes if you converted to Islam, and if did not then you would have to pay it to them instead of the Pope. That led to many pagans just converting so they could avoid paying taxes or even remaining unconverted to any of those two religions until as late as the XV century in Portugal, time at which dolmens were still being converted to chapels by the Christians to finally convert those Lusitani heathens who wouldn't relent! haha, it gets really murky, with those two religions over the centuries, in the end it's all about power anyway, so it's good to know my ancestors were so pragmatic.

Great video, but while it is true that the Lusitanians were greatly influenced by Celtic culture, it is unlikely that they were specifically Celtic-speaking, with recent scholarship suggesting that the Lusitanian language constituted a distinct branch of Indo-European, albeit one that was heavily influenced by neighboring Celtic languages, such as Celtiberian and Gallaecian.
@FaithfulOfBrigantia6 ай бұрын
It is most likely that Lusitanian was a more conservative version of the Indo-European language that gave origin to both Celtic and Italic. Hence "Proto-Italo-Celtic" would be my prefered classification for Lusitanian.
@FaithfulOfBrigantia5 ай бұрын
Upon further reading, a 2007 paper by the university of Coimbra has analysed all known Lusitanian toponimy and came to the conclusion that 63.5% of it was of Celtic origin, and the only words of Italic origin (18%) were literally in Latin, evidently from the period of Roman occupation or acculturation. Upon further reading in Lusitanian anthroponyms, i noticed that most often than not they write their names with "Celti" as a surname. Clearly evidencing that they did in fact identify themselves as being Celts, unlike many other people we call "Celtic" today (like in the British Islands) which have never even consider themselves or were considered by others as such, until we decided to reclassify them based on their language. Therefore i completely changed my mind on the classification of Lusitanian, it has to be undeniably Celtic, and even if it's a more distinctive branch from the other Celtic branches, the fact languages are named after people, and not people named after languages, that would make the Lusitanian language *THE* Celtic language.

Portugal belongs to its people who descend from a Lusitani majority, the Galicians and Lusitani are cousins and that's a non-issue because the problem here is that Galicians were conquered by Castile who stole their identity and language. Let's be a bit more critical: Nothing in the Lusitanians is Portuguese. In fact, little is known about Lusitanians, since no written records of them were found. So you only have archeological findings and the perspective on the Romans (like the famous saying after the betrayal to Viriato, where the traitors were killed because '"Rome does not deal with traitors") The Portuguese interpreted them as a pre-portuguese group, both for the geography but also for its metaphors (of resisting invaders, like Portugal did to Spain). But this is not set in stone. Consider Viriato. Two cities claim to be his birthplace. Viseu, which is in Portugal, but also Zamora, which is in Spain. All this to say: the Portuguese coopted the Lusitanians, but the Lusitanians never existed to create a pathway to the create the Portuguese nation

You learnt wrong unfortunately. The Lusitanians were not Celtiberian, neither were they Iberian at all, and there has never been any Iberians in the Portuguese territory. The Lusitanians, just like pretty much every single one in Western, Central and Southern Europe, are the result of two peoples called Steppe-Herders and Neolithic Farmers. Every culture, be that Celtic, Germanic, Roman, Greek, Lusitanian, Basque or Iberian, all descend from a mixing between these two peoples. With that said, the Lusitanian language had a common origin with Celtic whereas Iberian was a completely different and unrelated language, which never existed in the current Portuguese borders.
