Métis people have long battled against governments that ignored and denied their very existence.
20 years ago in the landmark Métis right case, R v. Powley, the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously rejected this denial, and affirmed the Métis people as a distinct rights bearing Indigenous people under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.
On the 20th anniversary of the Powley decision, we’re looking back on this historic decision as for our families and communities continue to advance their rights.
