Best mod for these is a proper dipstick or even a calibrated plastic one kept in the trunk. It's not only the level you need to check every week it's the colour of it and whether mayo present or not. Performance engines need constant TLC ⚠️✅

The worn timing cover due to the chain is common and guaranteed. It's best to grind off the material to prevent further issue. Also it's common from the timing sprockets on the crank shaft to have worn out rubber, best to inspect and replace as needed. I assume the timing chain and guides were all replaced since it's already out.

I just encountered this same problem on my 2006 E55. Luckily I've not had coolant mixing with the oil yet, but was replacing the water pump and decided I'd better check the timing cover O-rings. You can feel them by reaching into the coolant ports in the timing cover. It was immediately obvious as soon as I checked that one of mine had cracked and was coming out of place.

@demoralizer1
@demoralizer1 8 ай бұрын
Was the very soft nature of the O-ring caused by too much oil, or by oil with a gasket-softening additive? Could running something like Liqui Moly LM2020 for an extended period cause this issue on an M113K?
@DCMotorWerks

No experience with that additive. There aren’t many additives we believe in. Liqui moly makes great stuff though. I believe this one was more likely exacerbated due to a coolant issue but no confirmation on that

The O-Ring Failure is actually a pretty common one on the M113(K). The german mercedes focussed channel "Motoren Zimmer" described this in a Video called "1,22€ Dichtring verursacht Motorschaden bei AMG" about 3 years ago. Video is german only unfortunately. It's usually the result of using the wrong oil, not approved by Mercedes Benz for this engine. This will soften/expand the rubber, causing it to warp and present with the failure you saw.

Oil pump pick up tube gasket should also be replaced. Overfilling the engine can be avoided by draining from the sump bolts , and then measuring out and adding the correct amount only.

If memory serves me right, I think that when I purchased my e55 with 95,000 miles, when I had the dealer replace the motor mounts, I had had him drop the oil pan and replaced 2 pickup tube rubber seals. I did this because I had read that if either seal should dry up, crack, etc, it would be catastrophic for the m113k motor. Was I thinking correctly back in 2020 ?

Great video. This is exactly why I can't afford cars like this unfortunately. Because even though in Ireland, used Mercedes are unbelievably cheap, the trouble is the cost of petrol and motor(road)tax, which depends on the engine capacity. Anything over 2 litres isn't affordable and to add insult to injury, cars prior to 2008 are taxed three times the yearly tax of more modern, younger and smaller engine cars. This car In fact is 1850 euro just in road-tax alone per year. Then you are faced with sky high premiums on insurance. But buying one is very very affordable, exactly for those reasons. I just saw a 2004 E-Class estate for 700 euro. Running and driving, no damage. And there simply aren't any mechanics to service these cars, especially not in rural parts of the country. Luckily I have your channel to watch these mechanical marvels and it doesn't cost me a single cent!

Road tax and insurance is only part of it. Here in cheaper Switzerland I do about 25k km each year on 55 AMG and all in it costs about 700 dollars a month (parking, fuel, servicing, parking etc) That said it is lovely to drive vs all the plastic over computerised rubbish currently on the roads

I desperately want out of the US, but it's total sh*t laws like these which keep me here. They're just money grabs. The future of driving is extremely bleak & strictly for the rich. Quite ironic you have to live in the US to enjoy a good Euro car that doesn't have a lawnmower engine in it.

@@KingofInternsAs one guy commented, I think he was able to check his oring condition while he had water pump removed. If those orings are behind the front cover, you would probably need to pull balancer. So it is probably doable in the car if you make room. May have to pull radiator to make room. And see if oil pan has be moved. It would be good idea to pull pan anyway and check/replace oil pump pickup oring if it has one, i know e55 it is a failure point. There are multiple pickup/pan setups on m113/m113k engines, not sure all of them have an oring. To my knowledge cls55 has same setup as e55, unsure on sl and c. I dont believe s55 has an oring.
