Andrew great video man. As a photog, I almost went down the rabbit hole of buying an M1pro 16gb/1TB 14" laptop. I don't do any video, and the video I do does not require a billion video cores. The more I research this more I realize that a MacBook Air and a mac mini is the perfect combination. I've never owned mac...so it's been a steep learning curve while playing around with my wife's new MBAir 8gb/512gb laptop. But I've managed to get everything I need on it (Ps/Lr, Luminosity panels, Davinci, DXO Raw converter, Topaz DeNoise, and Luminar 4, in addition to MS suite. I finally got it to read my NTFS drives from my PC's...over all, I'm impressed by what these machines can do.

I’m really torn between getting one of these and they’re iPad Pro 12.9-inch I do love the iPad Pro as it’s so portable and being able to just take it to a cafe and so forth is so much more useful but then I look at something like this and the performance is so good I’m definitely not a MacBook Pro fan the other thing I find for photography editing is I like the ability to have a pen on the screen and I like that tactile feeling of moving my stylus pencil around the screen and that is one of the drawbacks of a lot of these systems is that you lose the drawer on screen ability.
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa

I have both and use them for completely different things. No production work on the iPad for me. Peripherals are what make the work experience better on a regular computer while iPads are great for consuming video and information wherever you like. There is overlap of course but both have their respective strengths.

Very helpful thanks. Do you reckon the Mac mini will cope well with RAWS for weddings from 5d MK3? I did a wedding recently and my old windows laptop is just painfully slow. I just need the cash for the Mac mini. I feel it's definitely the way to go despite never really liking the apple ecosystem. I just do a few weddings here and there as well as the odd music video as a side hustle. Helps when you have decent tools.

The Canon you mention shouldn’t be much different than my setup. The key for speed if you’re using Lightroom is to use Smart Previews. It takes a few minutes to generate them all at once, but it speeds up your workflow significantly.

Thank you for your review from a real photographer. I would ask you how about the performance on Lr module develop when you switch around all the images after apply preset/local adjustments brush etc? Does you have any issue or lagging? My workflow wedding photos it’s a little bit similar like you - Culling photos in PhotoMechanic - Edit color in Lr Classic/C1 - Retouch skin/cloning healing in Pts Do you use plugin Portraiture? It’s work well with M1 or it’s will use Rosetta2? Thank you!
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa

Lightroom is a hog no matter what. The issue that came up for me was that once I applied a bunch of changes, the application would be slow to switch between images. I use Smart Previews and have it set to always use them instead of the full images and it’s lightening fast now. Well worth the render time. I don’t have any experience with the Portraiture plug-in unfortunately.

Every experience that I have ever had with RAM shows that more is better. The same holds for all the initial tests of the M1 Macs where many people returned their 8Gb versions for 16Gb. This of course depends on how much processing you’re doing but for lots of of images, more is better.

@@AndrewVanBeekOttawa 150-300 the problem arises when the Ram memory ends, loading into the buffer begins and the processor is idle, I'm afraid that for a small amount of memory on m1, the process will take a lot of time
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa 3 жыл бұрын
@@anton9038 I find with smaller numbers of photos, it doesn’t make a lot of difference. When you’re dealing with thousands that’s when it’s most important. I’m not convinced there would be enough to warrant a switch. Have you run the benchmarks? One thing that is weird with my M1 is that when I switch from one image to the next in Lightroom and copy the settings from the previous image, it can suddenly be a lot slower than expected. This can get annoying.

@AndrewVanBeekOttawa
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa 3 жыл бұрын
I think you that you can get away with using the base configuration but will notice slower performance in cases where you are trying to use a few applications at once. You will also need external storage for backups and to maintain enough space on the 256gb SSD. It really comes down to the volume of photos that you plan to process.

I really want an M1/M2 processor but I simply cannot justify how much Apple wants to charge for RAM and storage. You also can't upgrade those parts later if you outgrow them, which means you must buy a whole new computer or work within those limitations. I'd just rather use Windows and retain that flexibility.

@@AndrewVanBeekOttawa I think that the idea that Macs do not offer value for dollar is over. Your Mini speaks to that. The price/performance curve will improve even further.... It's possible that next generation Macs will significantly outperform future x86 offers by a wide margin. Apple has the high ground in terms "mindshare" regarding the buzz on the lowly M1.... Hopefully they will leverage that and go after AMD and Intel on price at the very high-end. One thing for sure.... x86 Mobile computing already looks like a dead-end along with current "pro" desktops that need liquid cooling, multiple fans, huge power supplies and GPU cards bigger than your head....meanwhile, Apple will probably get rid of the distinction between laptop, desktop and portable processors (look at the new iPad Pro)... all future Apple SoCs will be mobile and devices will be classified by use-case not form-factor.....phew....

@@goobfilmcast4239 all of the same things have been on my mind. Some things still are crazy expensive though. A new M1 iPad Pro fully decked out is over $4000CAD which would be very hard to justify even if it is an amazing device.

After I bought the D850 I stopped editing photo's and nobody knows. Clients that want 16 bit tif: just convert the JPEG to 16 bit TIF. Much better than trying catchup with the garbage Adobe produces, and better for your profit. I just keep the RAWs and only do post processing to post orders.
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa
@AndrewVanBeekOttawa 2 жыл бұрын
If you’re happy with what the D850 can do it camera that’s great. Personally, a photo is only half done after the shutter has been pressed. I had the D850 for 2 years and loved how good the images were but they were still no where near complete in camera. We all photograph different ways and subjects so one size does not fit all.

I'm not that sure anyone can tell the difference from an OOC jpeg that was shot with the right settings and framing from shots that were worked in post, most of the time. Sure, the photographer knows he might want to tweak this or that, but to be honest, I think most people have no clue, they either like an image or not. It is about getting it right in the camera that should usually be the goal. (On the other hand, I kind of like Ken Rockwell's jazzed up OOC stuff for its kind of technicolor feel. So, I may be a minority.) So, I congratulate you on your parsimonious use of time and effort.
