Hidden and protected by the Arouca mountains of Portugal, lies a village that is standing still in time. The village of Drave was abandoned around 20 years ago but still proves an excellent destination for adventurers.
To get to the village, I left the campervan behind in Regoufe, a village with an interesting history of its own and embarked on a two hour hike through the mountains.
The Village of Drave is known as the Aldeia Mágica, the magical village. In this video, we’ll try to see if some of that magic still lingers deep in the mountains.
Please like if you enjoyed this video, subscribe for more adventures and then we'll see you on the road!

People who lived in these villages, had to walk long distances to the nearest cities to buy much needed supplies or see a doctor, they didn’t have reliable transportation like today they were lucky if they had a horse! Somehow they managed to make things work!❤

And it went like this for over 500 years… Until the village just couldn’t keep up with the conveniences of modern society, leaving behind this magical moment in time.

After being abandoned Drave is now mostly owned by the portugese scouts. Today it is a scouts base camp. If you visit the village during the weekends you will find lots of people there. Scouts and other visitors. During the summer it is a very popular (despite the 2 hour walk) river beach because of the various watterfalls and lagoons. The house that you see closed are actually in use. The have been rebuilt by the scouts. The mines ruins in Regoufe were the British mining complex. The German mining complex was close, in a village called Rio de Frades. Also worth a visit. Another popular river beach where you have to cross an old (but well maintained) mine tunnel to get the watterfall. Also a popular cannyoing destination.

I love solo hiking. I can hear the rustling of crickets and birds and lizards. Other wildlife such as coyote or deer (here in the desert). It’s so fulfilling.

With silence you can feel a different sort of energy, as if the earth is breathing. I like to lie on my back and try to feel the energy pulsing through me.

Nice to hear your Dutch accent We (brits) lived in the Netherlands for 30 yrs I think someone else has told you that the village of Drave is used by the scouts as a base so not really 'lost' I was more interested in the story of the Brits and Germans who worked together in the other village As I live in Portugal now I must research that

@OceanRoadies
@OceanRoadies Жыл бұрын
Not sure about buying an entire village! You can check on re/max for properties in these kind of regions. I did found a house for sale in one of Lousa's schist villages (see my video on that). Partly abandoned, still very serene environment.

Due to his inaccessible location, youngsters start leaving to migrate to make a living as you know working the land isn't for everyone and as the elders start dying no one wanted to comeback ence getting abandoned, also there are stories about radiation exposure emanating from the open mines of volframium an tungstenium opened by Brits and Germans, with people getting sick due to water been contaminated aswell. Good to see people going back there, but I would take a Geiger counter with me, these villages were abandoned for a reason, be careful very careful out there
