Something i found really interesting in the book was that learning magic was supposedly really difficult which is why they only recruit super smart students. In the show its mainly just the hand movements but in the books theres all these rules about it like you can only use those hand movements if other factors are in place like the moon phase otherwise the hand movements change. Theres so many rules and exceptions to those same rules thats you would constantly have to be thinking about.

The Magicians is one of those shows that has a slow start but it takes the time to develop very real and relatable characters. Also, I think the reason the soft magic system works here is because most of the time the magic is used as a way to explore the internal character struggles the cast is dealing with.

I've read the book series and watched the television series. I have a love/hate relationship with both. There are element in each that I really enjoy, and others that really can't stand. Thankfully, the good outweighs the bad, at least for me.

The magicians is one of my favorite series ever I was worried going into season 5 with the ending of season 4, but pleasantly surprised with how good, so far, the season is, and as for a book adaptation, I was worried about it being so different from the source material but the author of the books is a big part of the show so that brings a level of greatness to it, since I believe adaptations are best when they deviate from the source material, in a thoughtful and meaningful way, and the magicians does

Watching Sabrina first then watching Magicians feels like falling off a raging bull. The magic, in appearance, llooks much better, to me, in Sabrina.

My problem with the show was the fact that Quentin was just not a good main character. As a side character he would probably have been fine but he’s just not interesting enough.

I loved this show so much. Q can be a bit depressing sometimes but that's supposed to be his struggle. Season 4, shines such a bright light on his character. Like all the growth you'd want from a hero I believe he shows that in season 4. And even 5 was ok and was a perfect love letter to fans who supported them as the show was still running

You basically described my exact experience with this show. The first few episodes were meh and I seriously HATED Quentin. Then I somehow binged the first 3 seasons in a truly embarrassingly short amount of time. By the end of season 3, Quentin grew bearable and Alice became the absolute WORST. I'm on season 4 now and Margo is my favourite character (though I think Julia was designed for me to crush on). Love this show. I'll miss it when it's gone.

I don’t understand the Quentin hate. Nearly every character in this show is basically a loveable asshole, except Josh (everybody needs a Josh in their life), lovable but still complete assholes. In season 1, Elliot literally casually talks about most of the 3rd year class likely being dead but was like who cares let’s “find something magic to smoke”. 😂

I'm glad to see this show took a 180 for you. I originally stumbled upon the show in 2017 and thought it was a show based on that cheesy movie that came out years back. You know, the one about a guy in the 1800s who could do 'magic' but really it was a Magician side show. Then I turned on the first Episode. It was intriguing and 'cool' he found meaning with Magic. I related to the main character, in that he felt his life was sort of meaningless, I mean, who doesn't get that way at times? I liked where it was going with the mirror trick and everything, and right before the episode ended, that music plays. A guy filled with moths walks out of the mirror and immediately starts attempting to kill everyone. Rips the eyes out of the Deans skull, puts them on the table and draws a smile face with the eye balls. Immediately, I was hooked. That was possibly the mos 2007 metalcore scene shit I've watched in November, and I fell in love with it since. I've been meaning to pickup the books, but something tells me it'll ruin the experience with the TV show for me, since the books only cover 'roughly' the first 3 seasons in it's own take. Season 4. Well, you'll be in for a treat, and you'll probably revert your thoughts to "Why in the fuck did they do this to this show". The season also does a 180 on various things, and in a way it felt depressing. It put you into the state of mind that makes you believe that 'everything will be fine', and you want to and do believe that, but this is the story of the entire series as a whole. You put it great with this idea, and that is something Season 4 still has, but it's a bit...more realistic. And serious. If you do decide to watch Season 4, watch it with an open mind that Season 5 will have to be wild. They wrote themselves into one crazy mess, and the real wonder for myself is "How will this resolve".

Reasons why magicians is one of the best series ever: - The characters are very diverse. You have man, loving women, man loving man, Josh having sex with a werewolf and so on. - There are real consequences. Main characters can die, get serious depressed or lose parts of theyr body. These two things make the show different to nearly every other superhero movie or fantasy show.

I found it hard to believe that most of the characters where in their 20s. I've only watched a few episodes of season one. But I found the cringey highschool cliches that were for grad school level college students really obnoxious. I kind of liked Quinton at first because I sort of read him as a socially awkward dweeb, which can be fun. But certain things started getting on my nerves. Idk. I might watch it for fun in the background.

The books explains the magic system a bit more. It's still a bit loose especially once your dealing with non human magic. But they go into detail about how the hand motions, the languages and the world itself all affect magic and how casting magic on earth vs on another planet is diffrent. Due to the circumstances changing. It's still not a true hard magic system. But they do better explore magic as a concept in the books.

Well damn... Seeing everyone hate Q is kinda hurtful because i could deeply relate to him from the get go. I connect with his issues and i feel equally as awkward (because i feel like everyone hates the way i act) and now seeing that its true about someone else makes the social anxiety even worse💀

It's one of those shows that I find hard to determine if I liked watching it. I enjoyed many parts and laughed craving more and more. But there also parts where I do the exact opposite and skip half an episode because it's a predictable outcome, etc. I really wish they adapted the books better to reflect their time in class and actually learning things. Kinda like how Harry Potter did it. Although this is like a college version of Harry Potter so it makes sense they focus more on the time spent outside of class. Where the overall story takes place. In the end I would say if you have nothing to watch, definitely give this a viewing. But it's not going to be one of those shows you remember forever, it's just a good show with a very unique story line that manages to pull you in to its weirdness.

If you pay sufficient attention, you will learn that something ALL magic needs is gestures built on "finger-tuts," which is actually the reason that The Beast breaks the Dean's fingers when they encounter each other. You'll also learn that magic comes from pain, and every one of the characters is harboring some deep pain, starting with Quentin's Major Depressive Disorder. The next couple of seasons are definitely worth paying attention to.

I was curious about this show but from your description it doesn't seem like sth I'd enjoy. I hate when things happen just for the sake of plot with no reasonable explanation. This is an issue I also had with Lost where some things that didn't make sense were simply explained by - it's magic or he's special

The magic is much more complex in the book. Q really grows through out the trilogy, I feel like in the show they swapped Penny and Quentin. I can’t stand the main character in the Syfy series.

Quinton was keeping me from watching this damn show. I’m three episodes in and I cannot get past Quinton’s assholery and dejected puppy personality. Alice is also killing me. For fucks sake he stuck on Fillory like we get it its real stop trying to convince people and find out for yourself. The supporting cast keeps me going. I guess I’ll stick it out.

ok heres my review lol: i agree with a couple things you said here about how annoying quentin is, cuz he is lol, and how awesome elliot is, cuz he is lol. BUT the magicians is definitely not a show you can just watch while doing something else, and when you do that, you really lose a lot of meaning in the show. the magicians is acutally one of those shows you REALLY have to pay attention too and youll find, its actually very similar to rea life. also, you definitely need to finish it, its one of those shows you cant gtruly appreciate until its done, so you can get the full understanding of it all. also the character development is its best at the end with season 5 of course. the magicians, IMO, is based on real ife. its meant to showcase how magic might work if people in everyday life had access to it. every character has a real, personal, background, like penny and his absent father and distraught mother or alice and her toxic family dynamic that results in mommy issues or even quentin with his cripling anxiety and depression. all of these kind of people could, and do exist, ive met them all. i personally, have a backgrond slightly similar to elliots. all of these real world issues play more of a factor in their lives, even more so than magic and it is often these real world issues, that prevent them from magically progressing further. like for example, julia being raped by reynard, in any other magic show, wouldve been completely dealth with magically by the end of season 3, but even after magic is gone, she still faces the trauma, mimicking how SA survivors tend to take decades to appease their trauma, and sometimes never does. now while yes, quentin is irritating as hell, thats the point of his character. he isnt written to make you smile, or be happy, or content, in fact, none of the characters were. you arent supposed to like him. its just like real life, ur not going to like everyone you meet, and people arent born to please yopu, and neither are the characters in this show. also, there isnt always a solution to everything, even in this show. you said they always usually find a way to fix everything, but in reality, nothing they do brings things back to normal, something has always been changed or is different or is worse, just like real life. in fact , THREE of the main characters died, and only 1 came back. in most shows, no more than 1 main character dies, and they are almost always brought back. you can try to say they brought penny back, but not really. penny 23 and penny 40 are 2 completely different people, they dont even feel the same. and the only reason alice came back is cuz they used 4 big ass batteries, and quentin literally had to go to the underworld to get alice's soul. that shit took half a season to accomplish, and was NEVER repeated, no matter who else died. that right there is a showing of a defined magic system, of which you claim the magicians is lacking. now i will admit, there are multiple shows with stronger magic systems, but thats why the magicians works so well IMO. its not supposed to be the most defined cuz thats not real, real life is extremely defined, there are many unknowns, many coincidences, many what-ifs, many things in life feel random and crazy, just like in the magicians. the magic system works well enough for them to get by day to day, you cant tell me that doesnt remind you of real life. of course its sci-fi and all, but IMO the magicians is the most realistic form of a sci-fi ive ever watched. you can kind of consider magic in the magicians to be MONEY in real life, money isnt good or bad, it just is, the point is in how you use it lol

Not gonna lie, I couldn't stand Quentin the most. He maybe suicidal but, that doesn't change the fact that he was self-absorbed and lacked genuine compassion for a long time. He may not have been a narcissist but he had a lot of narcissistic tendencies that literally had to be beat out of him through the trouble he got himself in. He was a very entitled magic insel with a serious lackofaccountability. You could tell he couldn't fathom to think of himself like this but everyone else saw it. His ego was so huge. And he was completely insensitive and self absorbed whenever it came to his friend's needs. He only cared about being the main character or the hero but he didn't even possess that decency to be compassionate when doing so enough to be a hero. It took a couple of near death experiences for him to pull his head out of his own butt and care about what somebody else needed. It took a little too long for his character development. Also, his active listening skills sucked. They could have avoided some major issues had he took a moment to listen to somebody besides his own self. Elliot was my favorite. He just had the best character in both senses of the word. Julia would almost be 2nd. I really like Julia's determination but I hated how she questioned her instincts and intuition in crucial moments where she should have taken time to think. She turned into a straight up addict and got so desperate she jeopardized herself multiple times and didn't care. She was also for someone that asked a lot of questions she was sure being taken advantage of a lot. She she may have question things but her problem was definitely accepting faulty sketchy answers. She accepted any answer people gave to her And some answers you should not accept. Still it's not her fault people decided to be manipulative being manipulative but being desperate did not work in her favor peryou're a favor. I still admire her resilience.

i am really struggling to watch this show.. can barely finish season 1. i think this is the 1st time i skipped sex scene. just cant stand lead characters.. acting feels so fake and forced. everyone is acting like we are supposed to hate em. so who am i rooting exactly? all 3 main leads and even that indian dude for an extent are extremely annoying . elliot was pretty cool but then he started getting annoying after episode 9 /10 ish point.

I loved this series, the sad part is the constant SJW shit just brought it down for me. As a white male I can actually accept gay people and women’s empowerment and all that. I do not need SJW Hollywood to constantly bash me and all men in general because they think that is what the majority of their audience wants. You can only bash a gender or race before it is in fact you, that becomes the bigoted racist. Just saying. Other than that it was great, I had a lot of fun with it. The SJW moments took a lot away from it though and made me feel alienated.
