Grosio's main church is home to a concert of bells, considered the most beautiful bells in Italy. The town is located in the middle of Valtellina (Sondrio) in the mountains and is also home to the historic Pruneri bell foundry, arguably the best bell foundry in Italian history. The eight majestic bells are the heaviest concert in the entire diocese of Como, as the eight bells together weigh a total of 11268 kg.
The eight bells were cast by Giorgio Pruneri in 1908 and the concert is in the diatonic scale of A major, perfectly tuned and beautiful. In this video, the bells are ringing for the town festival, the fair of Saint Joseph, who is the patron saint.
Grosio's first parish church was dedicated to Saint George, built in 1257 and featured in the first few seconds of the video; it can also be seen from the shots taken from the top of the bell tower. On 13 April 1626, the community began building the new church of St Joseph, which became a collegiate church on 23 August 1664. On 13 May 1674, Bishop Ambrogio Torriani consecrated the new church of St Joseph. The parish of St George lost its title in 1818 in favour of this new church. The bell tower was built in 1720, when it reached its current height of sixty-five metres. The interior of the church has a single nave, embellished with seven beautiful altars made of precious marble. The presence of the dome and the lack of columns give the church a sense of incredible majesty.
