As the Great War drew to a close the White Star Line faced an uncertain future. Their fleet had once included the finest express steamers on the Atlantic: OCEANIC, OLYMPIC, TITANIC, and BRITANNIC. To their dismay only OLYMPIC remained to resume her career on the premier Southampton - New York route. Among the ashes of the German Empire they found two vessels to complete their trio -- the COLUMBUS (NDL) and BISMARCK (HAPAG). In 1922 they joined OLYMPIC as the RMS HOMERIC and MAJESTIC. The 35,000 GRT HOMERIC featured spectacular interiors and was noted for being a virtually roll-less ship. Her only major flaw was a relatively slow service speed of 18 knots which would eventually be improved to a more respectable 19.5 knots after her conversion to oil-fired boilers. The 56,000 GRT MAJESTIC gave White Star the prestige of owning the world's largest liner for the first time since 1913. Naturally she also contained luxurious interiors befitting the flagship of the White Star Line. This "Magnificent Trio" would enjoy a decade of success and ensured the company regained its place alongside Cunard as one of Britain's premier passenger lines.
