The Makeup Wipes That Caused 'Chemical Burns' - The Neutrogena Lawsuit - When Beauty Turns Ugly

The year is 2020 and seven women decide to sue Neutrogena. Claiming that 7 variations of their makeup removal wipes gave them burning and flaking skin, similar to a chemical burn!
Neutrogena is also hit with an avalanche of 1-star product reviews after claims that their grapefruit face scrub cause the skin to itch, peel, and swell up. With one customer ending up in hospital so swollen that she couldn't eat.
I also discuss one of their worst products to ever hit the shelves, the Acne LED mask which got recalled in 2019.

You know when you read a medicines leaflet and it says do not take with grapefruit juice? Wonder is that linked? The grapefruit burns the skin, as it’s applied topically? Not ingested? Intrigued, but too lazy (and high) to actually look it up 🤣 Edit: I’m 29, closer to 30 and experiencing the worst acne for the first time. Not even as a teen did I have so many and sore spots. Used to get the occasional mountain, but this? It’s the milkybars doing it. I’m addicted. I found a random face brand - maybe up adm coming? Anyways bar of soap for oily and blemish prone skin by Acnaut, by Biotrade, Biotrade. With lactic and salicylic acid. Cleared it a lot. I used a face mask last night and broke out again. Skin won’t take anything more than Snail Mucin by CosRX without a break out. My skin is highly reactive, so it’s rejecting anything it deems too rich 🥲😂

@@JamesWelsh I am not allergic to anything - I can literally use ANY lotion or face wash and have used anything that's on sale for about 30 years now. That is - until I tried CeraVe Eye Repair Creme. I finally found something that I cannot tolerate on my skin. SOOOOOO ITCHY! Neutrogena Hydro Boost line, however, is seriously the best thing ever. I also have had a bottle of Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Cream Cleanser for many years now and use it occasionally if I have a pimple, but I don't like the menthol in it. I seriously hate face washes with menthol. One can be allergic to anything, though, or become allergic seemingly overnight. You can get an allergic reaction to anything. It doesn't mean it's inherently bad. I've been using the Neutrogena wipes as a "first stage" cleanse and eye makeup removed for at least a decade now and have never had an issue with them. I follow it with micellar water, as that alone won't remove my mascara or eyeliner at all. I loathe washing my face at a sink, as no matter what I do, I get water down my arms and on the floor.

I'm sorry but I will never understand why people invest money in makeup wipes when they don't even do their job...... It's ecological & financial waste for absolutely no reason. Using a microfiber cloth with micellar water and then a cleanser would be absolutely perfect in your case! Please consider this, as the cloth would be much gentler on your face anyway (makeup wipes can be very exfoliating). Edit: Have to add another tip. To remove your eye makeup more easily, hold the cloth with micellar water over your eye area and let the product get into the makeup before you start removing it. It will make your life much easier, as it "breaks down" the makeup, otherwise it doesn't have enough time if you just start scrubbing from the get-go.

Given that the issue seems to be spread across different formulations of wipes, I wonder if the issue is the fabric of the wipes themselves. They may just be more abrasive than they seem the way rice flour or baking powder is. People can feel something as soft or smooth on their fingers but it can be abrasive to thin skin like around the eyes or mouth.

That might be possible. I haven't found a single wipe that didn't sting. Even those for sensitive or dry skin. If I use them twice in a row it even starts to burn. Now I only use them when I have dirt on my arms of chest area, and I need to get it off quickly.
@eepinwillow

You might be on to something. I've noticed with a lot of wipe products, when you scrub too hard, the surface texture can change as the little fibers start to come up out of the weave. Like if I rub a baby wipe on my skin too much, even on tough areas like my arms, it'll get that dry, stretched, raw feeling. Might be that the fabric irritates or tears the skin and lets the (intended topical) ingredients into the wounds.

So I have PCOS which caused my face, back, neck and shoulders to be absolutely covered in acne, my face had no skin without a bump on it, so my sister took me to the pharmacy and bought the pink grapefruit scrub. When I used it, it hurt so badly that I cried, but my sister told me that it just means that it's working, she didn't want me to stop because she paid for it with her own money. Until, I couldn't feel my face anymore, it looked like a sunburn and I got made fun of even more. I threw it away and couldn't even handle sunlight for a week, she got pissed, but when she saw my face she backed off then she got me the deep clean scrub when my face could be touched again and it wasn't horrible. That was when I was 10yrs old to about 16yrs old. Thank God for hormone medications, after about ten years on medications now my skin is normal to dry with no acne at all. I mean, can we really blame the product when she used it so inappropriately? I would think it was common sense, especially from a holistic specialist, to not scrub around your eyes with an exfoliate her that has micro beads. Definitely an example of playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes. And after looking at the other people that had similar reactions, do we agree that they look like they used an extreme amount and probably scrubbed the daylights out of their skin? The one that had that reaction on her neck in particular. Why would you use a scrub on your neck? Is it not common knowledge that the eye area and the neck are more sensitive than the rest of our face and body? I think I forget sometimes not everyone watches, copious amounts of skin care of KZfaq people like me.

I get contact dermatitis on my hands all the time and recently had a huge rash around my mouth after visiting the dentist which I'm assuming was the latex gloves and I had a terrible reaction to the sticky part of the dressings after a recent hospital visit. For example I was allergic to a red dye when I was little (it was in a bunch of candy) until I was a teenager and my mother was allergic to eggs for about 6-7 years as an adult. This is more evident in women as our hormones fluctuate more. We have had other allergies too, just not as noteworthy

I actually have acute adult allergies after a chemotherapy treatment I had to do a decade ago, and I became deathly allergic to a medication I had been on for over 8 years, ended up going into anaphylaxis, my heart stopped for a little over 2 minutes, and then I was in acoma for almost 2 weeks. I was in the hospital when i went into anaphylaxis, if i wasnt already in the hospital id be dead since i didnt have epi pens and wouldnt have ever known that it was a medication i had been taking for atleasy 8 years, including taking it twice the day before (also in the hospital). So now I really don't try any product without patch testing, and even then, the people I live with know where my epi pens are and how to use them, and I always take my meds at the same time and verbally tell someone I just took them incase something happens. I also don't really change my skincare routine or use as many products as I used to just so im able to keep track of what I'm using, when I'm using it, etc. Anyone can become allergic to anything at any time, but since I've been diagnosed with acute adult allergies I try to be very aware of everything I'm putting on&in my body.

That’s so crazy because that same exact Neutrogena Grapefruit Cleaners did the SAME thing to my face, as well over a decade ago! it happened to my mom too! She took a bath with the grapefruit cleanser on a wash cloth and let it soak into her forehead, then her forehead was sooo swollen and her eyes were puffy, she looked unrecognizable all for like a week at least. Then she fell ill and got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. After that she started to fall sometimes and got diagnosed with hydrocephaly! She had a shunt put in, but then kept declining and now has a rare brain disease that is terminal. I wonder if it began as a runaway reaction, like some kind of inflammatory response to the face wash.

You're one of the biggest skincare KZfaq channels that is actually honest and says it like it is without hiding anything. Which is why I love you & your channel so much. It's nice to put a light into the sketchy company because I still see a lot of die hard fans of this company that need to get informed. A lot of unaware people advertise their products on social media and it's kind of unacceptable. Because I was one of the people that believed the hype, I used their rosewater witch hazel toner and I got a chemical reaction. I have used a witch hazel rosewater toner before with the same ingredients from an other brand and I didn't have that reaction. I geniuelly think that they STILL hide ingredients from their list like they did before. Because I used dupes for Mario Badescu and I didn't get any reaction. Versus the original toner from the brand that burned, irritated my pores and left me a scar on my forehead from just a week of use and a chemical like reaction that didn't make much sense. I geniuelly GENUINELY think they hide ingredients, again.

And I got an insane breakout and rash using the “calming” ones so I swore I’d never use them again. Now I prefer the Walmart ones now, or the Equate ones (love the rose water one) they are so gentle and do a great job at taking my makeup off as a first step before actually cleansing. I consider this series from James my reminder to patch-test before using new products! Hopefully I can prevent myself from turning up in a future video 😳 Not saying to absolve companies of their responsibility, especially for brands that market to young consumers or market themselves as gentle or safer. In fact I think the brands are de-motivated from encouraging us to patch-test, because that reduces the number of new products we are going to buy and try out.

Last month, I grabbed a pack of Neutrogena wipes again while out shopping and started using them (the same way I always had in the past). In the past month, I had two massive flair-ups ... chemical burns after gently cleaning my face and applying my normal night cream. It took me doing it the second time to realize the wipes were the only thing that I'd changed out in my routine. It is so bad - huge red rings, swelling, skin is puckering, dried out over night and itchy. Unreal. My entire office stopped when I walked in.

I've never had trouble with makeup wipes, even though I have pretty sensitive skin, and I think part of it was that I did NOT use them as directed. I'd always leave the wipe on my face like a sheet mask for 30s-1min before starting to wipe so that the cleanser in the wipe would have some time to break down my makeup before I started anything like rubbing. After the first few times I used a makeup wipe, I noticed that my skin would feel salty after, so I started to make sure I always rinsed off my face after cleansing before applying a moisturizer. This meant that not only was I avoiding irritation from rubbing the wipe into my skin, but I was also washing off the chemicals from the cleansing wipes.

I used the liquid version of the orange soap and also the liquid grapefruit cleanser (not the scrub) in my teens and never had a bad reaction. I never liked the wipes. I tried them once and never bought another pack again. You're right James, there is a possibility that someone will have a reaction to any products out there so blanket allergen warnings probably aren't the answer. They should definitely make sure there is very clear recommendations to patch test on their products. I know most of my products from various brands recommend patch testing. Also, remember that we can become allergic or sensitive to things as we age. For instance, I can no longer eat egg yolks as they make the inside of my mouth ache. I'm 35 and have always eaten scrambled eggs and hard boiled eggs. Now I can only eat egg whites.

i had use a few packs of the blue packaging wipes, but had no allergic reaction or anything going wrong. I guess i got lucky with it or did not use it frequently enough to cause me damage

the same thing happened with me! i now know i have psoriasis but i never suffered from it until i tried the neutrogena grapefruit cleanser (not the scrub, just the clear gel cleanser). i hadn't used many of their products before but i never heard anything bad so i tried it. that next week was a living hell😅 i used it before i went to bed, no scrubbing with a cloth or anything, just lather and rinse and pat dry. next morning i woke up and was fine, used it again the same way that night and went to bed. next morning i was fine as well, but around noon i noticed my face was just very itchy and hot feeling and it felt like i'd gotten awful sunburn on my whole face despite not being outside much those previous days. by that night the drier parts of my face were cracking open and bleeding, and the parts that didnt crack almost looked like my face was sweating blood and yellowy fluid. i took benadryl and ibuprofen and kept a cool compress on my face thinking it'd pass but by the next day my whole face was shedding like a snake and the thinner parts of my skin were purple and red like i'd been badly bruised. the only thing i could stand to put on my face was vaseline, even rinsing my face with water felt like being set on fire. i ended up using lidocaine all over my face just to be able to rinse it with saline solution and clean all the blood off. (which is NOT an approved use of lidocaine so, do at your own risk?) over the next week my entire face turned silvery white and the flakes would peel off by themselves, but every time one would come off the bleeding would start again. i was about 18 when this happened and ive had psoriasis flares every few weeks ever since then. i had a similar experience with a sketchy mlm skincare product that was supposed to be like dead sea mud or whatever the hell. but NOTHING has ever injured my face as bad as neutrogena. what's the worst to me is that this isnt even a one off occurrence that can be blamed on my genetics! this happens to people who don't even have sensitive skin or genetic issues!

That oil free acne wash I bought when I was 22 in Poundland. I used it and then noticed my skin burning but thought nothing of it. In fact I thought it was to do with what I was eating so then used the face wash to clean my face thoroughly! My skin then started going red, extremely dry and itchy and burning. It was like that for over a week and took months to fully recover. I never went the doctors and always thought it must have been the face wash. Today proved that for me thank you! It made me feel so self conscious and upset at the time 😢

Allergies happen. You have to be aware of using new products. When i used benzyl peroxide my face peeled horribly and i had hives on neck and chest (only used on face) for over a week. But im sensitive and cautious so i instantly knew the culprit. I stopped using it (literally only 2 uses) and i was fine after a month (peeling left facial darkening).

That's rubbish. It's a chemical burn, not an allergy.

Funny thing is, when I was a kid, Neutrogena sunscreen was the only sunscreen that didn't trigger my allergies. (I've since outgrown that set of allergies)

I used to love their moisturiser from the pink grapefruit line when I was a teenager(acne). It was what got me into skincare.

When I was younger(14-17), I lived and died by that Deep Clean series. I had the wipes that were like cleansing wipes. They got soapy when wet. I used the cream cleanser. I had the moisturizer. I also used the cleanser with the 2%salicylic acid. Now, I use Cereve(sp) for my drugstore stuff or Clinique for my highend. Clinique is the only stuff that does not make my rosacia act up.

I also get the burning sensation from another popular brands face wipes. One cosmetolog said that her customers who use them regularly tend to have more dry skin. I never use them on eye area, but just quick wipe and rinsing with a lot of water.

I got those wipes at Costco. My face was always stinging afterwards but I thought I was just doing it too hard or something. My face was stinging but when I would apply my toner that burned like I had a thousand cuts all over my face. Same thing with the other face products. And they never did that when I hand wash my face. So I stopped using them. I thought it was user error. So thanks for letting me know!

I've used these wipes before and have had some of that same tingling/stinging in a minor way, but my main issue with them is that they never seem to actually make my skin feel clean. They leave such a strange residue on my face where I feel like I just have to wash my face afterwards anyway. I was gifted some in those little single use packages and it also just felt so tedious and wasteful to use them like that.

Woah wild. I used to use the non-scrub grapefruit wash and i didnt really have any issues but i did find it to be super harsh and stripping. Too much for me. Found something much gentler made a big difference

I used to use those wipes. It was one of those things where I didn't notice how bad it was until I stopped using them. I thought that I had really dry skin, but it got SO much better when I started using micellular water and reusable cloth.

That’s crazzzzzy because 2017 I had a super bad reaction to some of these wipes (super sensitive skin turned into psoriasis. I was in theater and we were running 8 shows in two weeks, and I had such a bad reaction but never knew it was that. I always thought it was my makeup. The only other time I had a reaction like that was in college after shows, too. Huh.

i do remember that those wipes made my eyes burn like hell when i was younger. it was the grapefruit ones. i went back to using them after getting low on money and refusing to buy off brand bc that would prolly make it all worse, and i actually rlly like the hydro boost ones, i use them when i don’t wanna cleanse and i just want a quick face refresher

I can't use grapefruit skin products because it triggers my eczema, but it still seems crazy to me that grapefruit is such a common ingredient in skincare. I used to work somewhere that sold the neutrogena grapefruit wipes, and they would dissolve and burn the package. I do use several items from the hydroboost line, though. The hydroboost sunscreen is the closest sunscreen I've found to the japanese ones i used to import.

I used the same cleanser too in 2016, I was like 15 and dealing with blackheads and pimples, but OMG that thing made my skin so sensitive, I even have some pictures of the redness and my pimples got even worse. I remember I thought maybe I was too young for skincare and gave up on it till my twenties

Omg! I had that grapefruit scrub! I only used it a few times because it was really rough on my skin. Thankfully I didn’t have an allergic reaction (which honestly is surprising bc I’m allergic to so many products such as most sunscreens and deodorants).
