She is India's first world champion in the IAAF World Athletics Final, the country's fist World Championships medallist in athletics and the first Indian long jumper to finish in the top five at the Olympics. Tatyana Lebedeva, Irina Meleshina (nee Simagina) and Tatyana Kotova of Russian Olympic Committee. Marion Jones, whose jumps were annulled, was also part of the long jump final. I still recall of watching this long jump competition at night in Doordarshan, 17 years ago.

India wont reach top in sports until the government or other academies provide free/less costly coaching for talented people ! Now only the rich people are getting chance to go for coaching and they're not doing a great job ! TBH. i've reached the district level in badminton without any coaching and lost to a national ranked player. The only downside is families usually don't support their girls to be in games, high end nutrition (for athelete level) and enough grant from govt to motivate atheletes. cricket is spoiling other sports in India that's a bitter truth.. BCCI doesn't want to grow other sports in country..see what is running on star sports. just 2 week remaining in Olympics but they are more interested to show cricket highlights and celebrate ex players birthday..and we are expecting more from our athletes. even 2 digit number of medals is huge achievement this time.

Lol cricket has grown cause it has won so many trophies and made our country proud..how many medals have we won in Olympics...cricket is only hope in india for sport and u are saying that its spoiling other sports lol

@@rigvedgirkar7817 Cricket is played by only 10-12 countries in which 4-5 countries give tough competition to India(England, Australia , New Zealand). In spite of less competition India won only 2 ODI world cups. How can you say cricket is only hope in India? We never won any ICC trophy for last 8 years. Also badminton, hockey, football, tennis have more competition than cricket. I'm not degrading cricket but you should accept some facts. Even Harbhajan Singh itself said that Neeraj Chopra's gold medal is celebrated 50 times more than 2011 CWC win
