The dialog written wasn't actually used, according to the "making of" feature. The two actors were friends from school and used to talk like this for fun, so they implemented it into the movie instead of the "jive" written by some honkey True story, bleeed

These gentlemen not only pulled off a "language", but did it with a spirit of broad humor and self deprecation that was so mature and refreshing, as well as capable of DESTROYING the negative stereotypes of that particular time period. I remember watching this in the theater and MELTING because it took all of my preconceived ideas and prejudices out of me, and stomped them into the ground. I will always be grateful to Allan White, and Norman Gibbs for creating such a wonderful moment of cinematic history...

In various dubs, they used different distinct dialects as jive, which, depending on the language, can actually be even funnier than the original. E.g. in German, they speak Bavarian, in Italian (IIRC) the Neapolitan dialect, Spanish was afaik Cuban and so on. That's certainly easier than jive since they are, for all practical purposes, complete languages.

I remember how a bunch of us saw the movie when it came out and afterwards, all we could talk about was the jive scene. Our attempts to speak jive never sounded as cool as the movie, but it was still a good laugh!

Barbara Billingsley popping in out of the blue as a jive translator absolutely destroyed. "I speak jive" is among the most iconic lines in movie history. I was reminded of this scene when Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg teamed up on ads. By several accounts, Airplane! is rated the #1 comedy movie of all time. It helped, but not necessary, to have first seen the Airport movies, and Zero Hour (1957). The latter of which so much content was lifted from, that the producers bought the rights to the film.

Their scenes are epic. They both have great voices. I could listen to them read the phone book.
