A drought in 1970s Southern California has an unexpected side effect: as people empty their swimming pools, a group of teen surfers from the Dogtown area of Venice Beach move in with skateboards, and a new sport is born. Based on a true story, this film follows "Z-Boys" skate team members Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch), plus manager Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger), as their fearless "pool surfing" leads to fame, fortune -- and misfortune.

So much love and respect for this movie. For the actors, producers, directors, creators, and most especially for the OG Lords... The Z-Boys who lived, breathed and dominated Dog Town and the epic era they launched. They are often emulated - but could never possibly be duplicated. #MadRespect

It's wierd, my dad, who grew up skateboarding in the 70s felt nostalgic when we went to theatres and saw this. Now I feel nostalgic watching this thinking of all my friends and how we used to just skate until the lights at the park turned off. The subtle heat coming from the concrete filling the cool air. The smell of weed and the laughter. Always trying to one up each other but never putting each other down. I miss those times and those people. Life has become very lonely. That was back in the early/mid 2000s.

I love this director. She makes it as real as she can, no shortcuts. Thought it would be cool to turn a doc I was a part of into a feature film. It's all about the character and our doc kinda was. It was about skating all the pools after the firestorm in Oakland in 1991. It got best story award at xdance in saltlake. These real life stories are so moving. Well done with the character dramma

i remember being OBSESSED with that documentary in college. I was a skater who at least knew who Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta was... but had never heard of Jay Adams, and only VAGUELY knew who the z-boys were. So yeah, as a skater... it was like a serious history lesson. When I found out they were going to make a movie about the z-boys? I just wanted it to be done right, and use the documentary as a template. I was very impressed with the final result, especially Ledger's portrayal of skip.

Graphite lube on the ball bearings. Skating pools & 6 man catamarans down some steepass hills. What a time to be ALIVE! This movie is a beautiful time capsule of the surf & skate culture of the 70s. And the crazy part is, they got paid for it. Cmon man, these guys get to take away the skill of skating bowls for the rest of their lives and getting an popular acting gig that's on their resume for the rest of their lives. The dream

Watching this smokin bowls in my car and I had a realization about halfway through when they were talking about learning to skate for the movie, specifically “don’t be so stiff” As a car guy and a skater it made me connect the looseness to springs. Stiff springs transfer more weight, it’s all physics and works the same anyway. Next time I skate I’ll definitely keep the is one in my mind to see if it makes a difference.
