The Making of Modern Warfare's 'All Ghillied Up', Told by Ex-Infinity Ward Developers

I spoke with three ex-Infinity Ward developers to discuss their work on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’s signature level; All Ghillied Up.
We spoke at length with the Respawn Entertainment devs about the level’s stressful and unconventional scripting and programming, key inspirations and immediate influence on the video game industry.
The developers also wanted to acknowledge that designer Preston Glenn handled the geo for the level, and also had a significant role in All Ghillied Up's creation.

Basically Stalker takes place within the Chernobyl exclusion zone and takes its story ideas from roadside picnic and the stalker film and blends it in to a more grounded experience. its a mix of shooter survival and horror. I don't really wanna give away the story too much if you've never experienced them. But literally the lore inside the zone is very impressive and honestly believable to some degrees on it. and then there's the anomalies the exist mutants and the various factions.

As someone who plays games for the single player story only, I love well done scripted levels. This was an amazing example of it being done incredibly well. I know a few other games took this style way too far where it became “press x to win”, whereas this level still had you feeling in control - there was still flexibility in how you took on each situation. COD4 lives on as an all time great for me, none of the future games in the series have been able to meet the standard it set.

I remember when the MW demo came out, with The Bog as the level - My computer could barely run it at that time, but I played the thing over and over and over, and got a new computer sometime after the release just for the game. And holy fuck did my brain go apeshit when I played All ghillied up for the first time through. It's just on another level than the rest of the game. Although the idea has been copied over and over in many games afterward, none of the levels had the sense of realism and immersion. They either felt forced or imaginary to the point of disconnect. But Pripyat is a real place and it looks like that... And before that, not many people knew about it, let alone walked through it. It really is a genius idea, created masterfully.

Thank you so much for this video. All Ghillied Up is my all time favorite level from any cod campaign, it's amazing to find little stuff like pre-alpha builds with a geiger counter and now this 'behind the scenes' if you will. I remember watching the Crew Expendable walkthough on the cod4 bonus disc with the dev's commentating behind it, wishing there was something like that for other levels, and your video was exactly what I had always hoped for.

So kind of you to say mate! I don't think it's going viral anytime soon. What I would say is if you and any other viewers are willing to share around/post on reddit the video, it makes the biggest difference to the growth of the channel. I know it sounds a bit slimy asking people to share, but in all honesty for a small channel it's a huge boost. Thanks for watching!

Some ideas for future videos that I would love to see: - creating portals - mass effect morality system. - mass effect's persistent choices between the games, and their ramifications on development. - Dishonored. How they came up with the idea, how they implemented the powers, etc.

I remember Ghost Recon missions where 1 shot=1 kill and it could take a hour to do. Just one wrong move and it was all the way back to the waypoint which were far apart. That same tension is what made this level so great. Sadly, most shooters and COD turned into super fast, non stop on rails scripted 6-8 hr rollercoasters. Fun but no replay value.

A truly epic game; I was there at the beginning and it changed the way I looked at FPS's forever. The original MW is as playable now as it was on release and stands as a landmark event in game development. I feel the reason that All Ghillied Up was the personal favorite of many people was the fact that it was just ONE/TWO levels, and it easily stands out, if all the levels were like all ghillied up, people would love that single run-n-gun level simply for the reason that it was DIFFERENT, and the fact that it was good made it simply beautiful...

the intro of "All Ghillied up" where Capt Mac just comes up from the ground surprised me so much I had to reset the level and take a hard look at where he is at multiple times, really sets up the level that it is indeed possible to sneak that much all the time, its a real stealth mission

I played a ton of MoH Allied Assault, COD1 and 2. Hearing about the evolution of the concept and finding out the same guys worked on all these games blows my mind. I remember following Major Grillo through the Operation Torch Mission in MOHAA, and to find it helped inspire All Ghillied Up brings it full circle. I realized the depth of the scripting when, in the early part of All Ghillied Up, I looked at the wrong church tower and Cpt. MacMillan says: "No, the other tower."

I wasn’t expecting this to be so professionally made, Excellent video! I knew there was a lot of cut content regarding CoD 4, but I didn’t know they scrapped almost half the game in the middle of development. I remember being like 10 years old, coming home from school, and sitting on the floor in front of the TV alone in the apartment playing the CoD4 campaign. Whenever I got to the "All Ghillied Up" mission, my hands would start sweating, and my eyes were glued to the screen. It was so intense to hear the music and sneak through the grass. I would sigh with relief whenever the chopper would pick up Price and McMillan at the end. I'm 19 now, and still play the campaign through every now and then. This mission still creeps me out a little bit. The fact that a video game can make me feel so many things while playing it, is a sign that developing it was a labour of love.
