I'm back lol.
I, Typoh. Discuss the making of the Adult Swim animated show Smiling Friends as well as it's production and journey from Zach Hadels Newgrounds animations and old show Hellbenders with OneyNG, to its current state on Adult Swim. I'm a big Sleepycast and OneyPlays and it's really cool to see Zach receive his own Adult Swim animated show

Don't also forget that one other show that oneyng made that actually almost got picked up by HBO for there adult cartoon lineup at the time called Leo and satan, but to sum it all up the reason it hasn't from the stuff and old interviews I've seen from Zach that apparently they wanted full control of the show and wanted to cut Zach and his friend out of the picture, but of course he declined and took the show back from HBO

Can we take a moment to appreciate how Chris and Zach worked together on a stressful pilot project that went nowhere and yet are still friends with great chemistry and love for each other? An experience like that can easily kill a friendship and it's kind of wholesome that they're still collaborating after all these years.
@Hexen_Wulf
@Hexen_Wulf 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad they're still friends (Any episode of OneyPlays with Zach on it is an instant watch), but I think the reason Zach was so successful on this project is because he wasn't directly partnered with him. Chris seems like someone you have to appease and will get in shitty moods that can easily kill a project, whereas it seems Zach and Michael seem to be friends *and* work well together. But that's just me talking out of my asshole, it's not like I know any of these people in real life.
@stproducciones9140
@stproducciones9140 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hexen_Wulf seems to me like the problem was the exact opposite. They both did whatever the hell they felt like, and it was all fun and games until they needed to actually get serious with the pilot and they just weren't cut out for that yet. They needed to mature creatively.

I think one of the reasons why Smiling Friends is so popular outside of people who know about Zach is because it takes a different stance on adult humor; Positivity. Rather than just having characters that are negative constantly, you have characters that go around and make negative people happy. It’s different from everything else in the adult animation scene.

that's true a lot of the humor and popularity is based the similar archetype of most times being all around terrible person to be around; think duckman, dan vs, bojack, gary & mike, bender, peter griffon, rick, everyone from supermansion, and most of big mouth. personally see smiling friends refreshing.

current adult animation is seeping with cynicism. this show came off as more optimistic and uplifting than any comparable content i’ve watched, and that’s saying a lot considering a guy’s holding a gun to his head the entire first episode lmao

@@Typoh_YT It would be interesting to have an Episode where the Smiling Friends Crew goes on a Company Vacation. Where Bad things keep happening in a Hilarious way, but the Characters push forward. Basically any **Fill In The Blank** Scenario could be funny. Like they go Camping, and in the middle of the night they hear a Crash. When they investigate they see a Bear stealing their Food. Pim Whispers to everyone " Don't Move..." Then the Bear says something like "Sorry Everyone. I am a Kleptomaniac. I am seeing a Counselor though." Charlie could then Yell " DUDE! GIVE US OUR STUFF BACK" Which then the Bear could say "Toodles", and run off with their stuff. Charlie: "Ah. That's just great. What are we going to Freaking Eat". Pim " We could go Fishing in the Lake and catch some Trout". Etc... Or another example they go on a Cruise. In one Scene everyone is swimming in a pool, and Charlie could say something like " Why are there so many loud Children on this Cruise? I got a splitting Head Ache because of them." Then a Kid Yells Canon Ball and jumps into the pool. A split second afterwards the Water turns Brown around the kid, and quickly spreads to the rest of the pool. Like literally the whole Entire pool turns Brown within about 2 seconds. I could go on, and on lol

The best thing is that this show is so out there and original. After Rick and Morty and let's be honest, the Simpsons, set a trend, alot of adult animation really tried to copy those formulas. Smiling Friends has that feeling of old experimental adult animation, while still bringing fresh new concepts to the table. If it does get greenlit for another season or two, at that point it's definitely gonna be a game changer in media.

As someone who didn't have any background knowledge of Zach or Chris, it's so crazy to see that a show one of my friends told me to watch was created by the people who made fever dream animations from my childhood. Weird, I knew all of this already. Also Chris didn't do the satan. Also one prominant reason Hellbenders wasn't picked up was that during the pitch Chris and Zach were too inflexible with certain aspects: namely, the name of the show. Adult Swim didn't want too shows with Hell themed names to be airing around the same time.

The best quality about SF is just that: quality. I went in not really knowing who Psychicpebbles was or anything, I just saw the pilot a while back and thought this show deserved a chance. Watching the full first season tells me that this show is a quality show. The humor is original and timing-wise is excellent; few if any jokes go on longer than they should. Punchlines are creative and sometimes unforeseen, which is great. Even when the humor just makes me think "funny" and not actually laugh, the animation raises the show to a new level.

for someone who's writing a series pilot, this was useful to me. my series is tricky to explain, the best way i can put is "lost in space with high schoolers" it's come from my desire to create something that can be a classic, in the same vein of robinson crusoe. it's also not intented to be funny at all (i don't have comic sensibilities) but it is animated and i hope the underlying existential horror of it can make it stand out a bit, so thanks for sharing

Your comparison to Jonathan Larson and Zach Hadel is goddamn superb and I didn't even see it coming. This is one of the best video essay's I've seen in a long time. Keep it up man. #MakeSmilingFriendsSeason2

I think the amount of these types of videos coming out suggests we'll get more if that's what Zach and Mike wanna do and I hope they do, still dying to watch the first season but hoping so hard they get more

you have to go through a lot of iterations, each iteration having had more toil done to it than the next one and in between you just gasp for air. much respect to everybody!

I think what's interesting is that even if you spot some of the influences (from South Park to It's Always Sunny to Aqua Teen), it never feels like a derivative piece. It's always distinctly Zach and Cusack's brain child, which is great.

10:13 It didn't go towards nothing, I'm fairly sure that some of that content was deep fried into my subconscious so that whenever I hear "looks pretty good" I will consistently think "you look pretty good ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)" in the exact tone of voice Zach used when reading the line and I will never escape this no matter how hard I try. I mean that's gotta be worth like... _something._ $3.00?

Thank you, that was very interesting. When I first watched Smiling Friends I immediately recognised the art style from the "get out of my car" video, even though it had been years since I'd watched it. But I didn't know the guys behind Smiling Friends already had such a rich past in terms of (more or less) professional video production. Also the video itself was well done! I thought this was made by some bigger youtuber, then I looked up your uploads and it was your first video (on this channel, who knows what else you have created in the past). Awesome show, great job!

Most adult swim shows DO NOT cost 10k per minute of animation lol. That's for shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not hellbenders. Not smiling friends. Not many Adult Swim shows at all except for Rick & Morty late seasons and Venture Bros mid to late seasons..
@Typoh_YT
@Typoh_YT 2 жыл бұрын
This was my source, Zach states that a minutes worth of animation was 10K per minute, although he was refering to at the time studio standards as well as the rates of Yotta, so I could be proven wrong given more research kzfaq.info/get/bejne/laycoa14tJuthp8.html

@@Typoh_YT yeah zach is just dead wrong, sorry to say. And this video is a completely off the cuff, podcast streaming kinda thing so I don't really get mad over him exaggerating or just straight up not knowing and throwing a random "seemingly reasonable" number out there. Again, he'd be right if he was talking about actual high budget animations... not 75% of adult swim shows.

Rick and Morty was brilliant for two seasons but then quickly lost it's identity and spiraled out of control during season 3, hopefully Smiling Friends can stay true to itself and keep sight of what it's going for while not loosing it's composure the same way.

Having watched the pilot years ago when it was first made and having followed the progress of the show from the beginning and all the people behind it, I knew it was about to be a true hit when my dad randomly mentioned it to me as a "new show coming out that looks really funny." Decided to go over there and watch a few episodes with him when it first came out and we ended up binging the whole series in one go.

I like how you really prefaced your Hellbenders hot take despite you being 100% correct. I think what makes it less of a hot take is that, sure, by itself Hellbenders is fine, but when put next to Smiling Friends, it's clear why one flopped and one is a success. So happy for them. Hope this changes their lives in a really meaningful way.
